Are you updating over the air on the device, or using iTunes on your computer? The over the air update is about 130 MB, so even on a slow connection it shouldn't be more than a few minutes. The iTunes update is 2 GB, so a high speed connection is essential. In addition, any antivirus that has real time file scanning enabled will slow it to a crawl, no matter how fast your Internet connection is. So disable your antivirus entirely, or at least turn off real time scanning before trying to update.

I've just done the update directly on my iPhone from 7.0.4 to 7.0.6 and it took 15 minutes from start to finish - on my iPad yesterday it was similar.
However you do the update, directly on your iPad or via your computer's iTunes (via your computer will be slower), then copy your purchases over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases and take a backup of your iPad - and preferably copy any important documents and/or photos off as well so that you have your own copy of them (the update should go smoothly, but it's best to be safe)

Anecdotally, it took me about 20 minutes.
Give it time, keep trying, should eventually work.

I have purchased iCloud and it is now four days since I started to install the software. iCloud appears to stop installing when my password protections comes on. I have therefore taken that off until the software is installed.

iTunes Match can initially take a very long time to scan your library. Using other iCloud services such as photo stream will not have an effect on iTunes Match.
It should eventually move onto the last song and finish the scan, although 3 days is a very long time for it to be stuck. My library is 1590 songs and took around 12 hours to complete. If it continues to be stuck for a day or two I would suggest restarting the scan.

Typically 20 minutes or so for a clean install. Longer for a reinstall over an existing system - 45 minutes to an hour.
These times do not include time for downloads. A reinstall requires downloading Lion which can take several hours depending on the internet connections at the time.

Well actually i solved the porblem by shutting it down and then i did restart. After that Windows did start normally. I was just afraid of that it might mess something up in the OS X partition. But thanks for help anyway!

first to get to the SP1 release, then updates since then
And, based on reading threads on forum, it seems like a backup snapshot/image before taking some steps would be.... helpful insurance.
Installing can go quite quick, at one time only took 20-30 minutes, but has grown since then, and with my Mac Pro rig, I've run into some impossible confflicts (remove graphic card A until I get through SP1) which was another incentive to getting new installer disc.

One thing that slows down the updating, it is very highly compressed. 300MB is a lot and can take couple GBs as it is uncompressed, then used to update and patch and puts a strain on hard drive and cpu. Vista SP1 could require up to 7GB of temp space, used only during the update and then returned. 64-bit was estimated to require even double. And your hard drive churning away.

Still no 4G here and the status checker is saying that extra work is being carried out at the end of next week (it's been saying that for every week since they started). So, that'll be a month of work, yet still no 4G and 2G and 3G signals are actually getting worse. I've went from usually having at least 3 bars to regularly having 1 or No Service.
What could be taking them so long at installing it here? Perhaps they have finally realised all those complaints about signal problems here over the years weren't lies and there really is terrible coverage and they're FINALLY going to fix it?!

Have you received any type of error message? You may want to try disabling your anti-virus/security software as it could be interferring with the installation process. Which operating system are you using?
