How long is the start up time with macbook pro retina?

I just bought a new 13 inch macbook pro with retina display.  It is using osx mavericks.
It takes about 21 seconds to start up.  I watched a demo on youtube and the demo showed it should take about 12 seconds to start up.
I have two users on the computer and each user requires a password.  Would that take it longer to start up?  The demo had one user and it didn't require a password.
I also briefly had sophos antivirus installed but uninstalled it.  I don't know if this could have slowed it down, but it is off the computer now. I also have the firewall turned on...could this slow it?
Thanks for any input!

AppleCare will only replace your battery if it has significantly lower than expected capacity within one year of buying. After a year it's not covered.
Your battery's capacity very much depends on how you treat the battery. If it's always in a hot environment and if you're always draining the battery to 0% charge (two things that decrease Lithium-Ion battery life), then the capacity that you have is not too surprising.
You could try calling AppleCare but I don't know that you'll get anywhere with them considering that it's been more than a year.

  • How long is the actual battery life of Macbook Pro?

what i don't get is how fast my battery drains out...
my primary usage is document study, photograph editing
web browsing. and occasional accompaniment of music in the back.
my battery life at the moment lasts for 6 hours max..
what should i do to get optimum battery life!??

My empirical experience shows that I get 60% to 70% of Apples advertised hours.  That is reflecting my 'normal' operating conditions.  Web, email, with iTunes in the background as well as Activity Monitor.  CPU intensive applications such as Aperture, Toast, Video viewing etc. drive battery life way down.
Six hours is most acceptable.  That is 'good' in real world conditions.
    Look at this:

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

Try holding down the trackpad button while starting up the PowerBook.  Holding down mouse button during start up ejects the disc in the optical drive, so I'm guessing it would work the same with the button the the trackpad.

  • Long shut-down time on MacBook Pro Retina 2013

I have my MacBook Pro Retina, with Mavericks running. It's the latest MBP Retina from Apple. Brand new, with all updates from Apple (Mavericks 10.9.1). I disconnected all USB-devices etc. But the shut-down and restart time is way to long. I measured about 48 seconds. The spinning wheel (which shows at the shut-down) moves really slow. I have done PRAM-reset and also used the Disk Utility to repair permissions. Nothing helped, so I wonder, what could it be? I checked here in the ASC other thread concerning the same problems, but with older MacBook Pro Retina models and OS X prior to Mavericks. So seems, this issue is still consistent… Appreciate any help and also eventually Apple could investi

Also I investigated a little bit with the Console app. When shutting down, the Mac tries to access some read and write privileges, but can't do that. This problem seems to have something to do with the Sandbox…
    29.12.13 01:04:22,000 kernel[0]: Sandbox: xcscredd(138) deny file-read-metadata /Users
So who knows that and what ist the xcscredd(138) app and why does it try to access my Users folder?

  • The Logic Board of my MacBook Pro Retina Display stopped working.

I purchased my MacBook Pro Retina Display 13 months ago. Barring a few errors the computer functioned beautifully, and I maintained it with the care it deserved. On Wednesday, last week, the laptop ceased to work completely. It wouldn't start, or charge. On submitting it for repair, I was informed that the logic board failed. Since its warranty lapsed a month ago, $1050 is required for its replacement. That outrageous amount is more than half of what I paid initially for the laptop. The service provider would not agree to any concession, or plea.
For an Apple enthusiast, it is very disheartening to learn that its foremost product stops operating in this manner. I am a high school senior, who has accustomed himself to his computer, and cannot at this time purchase a new laptop, let alone a Windows laptop. With college admission deadlines fast approaching, I solicit your help and suggestions, very desparately.

As much as it will suck to hear this answer, there really is no solution. Because the computer is now out of warranty, you have to pay the full $1050 to get the logic board replaced. I know this is a large sum of money, but you have to remember that the logic board includes the CPU, Graphics Card and RAM, all soldered onto the board. You're paying to replace all of the most expensive components of your computer, even if only one of them failed.
So, long story short, you'll have to either pay to replace the logic board, because it's out of warranty, or buy a new computer.

  • REFInd with MacBook Pro, Retina: invalid loader file!

I'm trying to dual boot Arch and OSX on a MacBook Pro, Retina, 15".  I've been following the Direct EFI booting (rEFInd) guide, but I've also read through a lot of the related docs.  Because many instructions on the web seem outdated based on recent improvements in rEFInd, I will post what I have done so far since this info may be relevant.
    1. I resized my harddrive.  I installed arch on an ext4 formatted partition (/dev/sda4 with 128M gap before, ie.., sector "+128M" in cgdisk).
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
    sda 8:0 0 233.8G 0 disk
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 200M 0 part
    ├─sda2 8:2 0 116G 0 part
    ├─sda3 8:3 0 619.9M 0 part
    ├─sda4 8:4 0 17G 0 part
    └─sda5 8:5 0 99.9G 0 part
    2. Running OSX, I installed refind (refind-bin-0.8.0) using the --nodrivers option.
    sudo ./install.sh --nodrivers
    Installation appeared to be successful.
    3. I updated the refind.conf file.  The "scan_all_linux_kernels" is uncommented by default, and I uncommented the also_scan_dirs line so that these two lines appear as shown, with everything else default:
    scan_all_linux_kernels
    also_scan_dirs boot,ESP2:EFI/linux/kernels
Result: rEFInd loads on boot, but no option for Arch appears (only the Mac option).
    4. I decide to try a manual menuentry, so I set the scanfor line like this:
    scanfor internal,external,manual
Then, I write in an entry for Arch Linux (and comment all other menu entries):
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
    icon EFI/refind/icons/os_arch.icns
    volume 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4
    ostype Linux
    loader /boot/vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
    options "rw root=/dev/sda4 rootfstype=ext4 libata.force=noncq"
I verified that vmlinuz-linux and initramfs-linux.img exist and are in the /boot directory in my main arch partition (/dev/sda4).
Result: I get an Arch menu entry, but when I click on it I get this error message:
    Starting vmlinuz-linux
    Using load options 'rw root=/dev/sda4 rootfstype=ext4 libata.force=noncq initrd=\boot\initramfs-linux.img'
    Invalid loader file!
Error: Not Found while loading vmlinux-linux
I also tried these lines for volume, each in turn:
    volume 4:
    volume linuxmain
("linuxmain" is the partition label I gave the partition with cgdisk)
For completeness, `diskutil list` on the Mac gives me:
    /dev/disk0
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *251.0 GB disk0
    1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 124.6 GB disk0s2
    3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
    4: 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4 18.3 GB disk0s4
    5: 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4 107.2 GB disk0s5
Note that I've tried the above procedure both with the stock refind (refind-bin-0.8.0.zip) and the arch specific refind (refind-bin-gnuefi-0.8.0.zip).  In all cases I made sure all the refind files were removed before re-installing.  I've already spent a lot of time on this, and I'd really like to get Arch booting, so any help is greatly appreciated!

I had this problem myself which got me going round in circles for ages.  The Arch Official rEFInd package contains v.0.7.9 (and is flagged out of date).  Apparently there is an Arch specific problem with v.0.7.9 and the most recent (until today) v.0.8.0.  The only way I could get it to work was to use the v.0.7.8 gnuefi binary from sourceforge.  I've been in touch with the developer who has released v.0.8.1 today which he thinks fixed the bug, but I've yet to test it....  Let us know how you get on.
When the package gets updated I would hope for it to be built from gnuefi, not the tianocore EDK2010 as it is currently, nor even 2014 which all seems unduly burdonesome....

  • Slow Shut Down Time For Macbook Pro Retina Snow Leapord

Hello, I was hoping somoene could help me with the following problems.
I have brand new Macbook Pro Retina, 15inch, 16G RAM, 500G of SSD, running Mountain Lion, and lots of professional recording software. My macbook frequently shuts down after 30 seconds, that wonderful grey wheel spinning in the center of the screen as if it were an old PC.
I've contacted apple frequently. They check to see that I've repaired disk permission, they reset...the RAM i believe, they ask if i shut down all the programs. Even through doing all of this, usually my macbook takes 30 seconds to shut down. Sometimes it takes only 5, which is how it usually should be. ANd this occurence seems to be inconsistent with the apps I use. Sometimes it takes long to shutdown when i've barely used a thing. Other times it shuts down immediately when i've used a lot of different programs at once. So there's no constant.
The apple boys suggest reformatting the computer to make sure it isn't a hardware issue. I refuse to accept that after only 3 months of use I already have to reformat everything. It's not the most enjoyable experience because I'd have to reinstal all my audio software despite Time Machine's magic tricks. Any suggestions?
Here is a link I've found on the matter: http://thecustomizewindows.com/2013/02/fix-mountain-lion-slow-shut-down-time/

These terminal commands decrease the excecution time of a process that has caused slow shutdown times for many users. This resolved my slow shutdowns. IF you are comfortable using terminal you can give them a shot, but be VERY careful using terminal.
These terminal commands should also fix the problem then and kill the services after 2 seconds:
    Code:
sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents.plist  sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ExitTimeOut -int 2  sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents.plist

  • Network Issues with Macbook Pro Retina will Apple Router solve issues?

Hi, I just purchased a Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have been having major WIFI/Internet issues.  Slow connections, constant spinwheel of death, half loading pages if the website has a lot of images (Facebook, etc).  Sometimes I have to wait a fair bit of time and they may eventually load, or I'll have to close the browser and reload the page.
In the area I live in, Bell offers only Fibe 5.1 (802.11 g/b) at this time.  I wondered if I purchased a separate router with an 802.11n connection (and disabled the router on the 2Wire modem from Bell), would this solve my issues or is Fibe 5.1 just unable to handle the new "n" technology/speed.  I'd like to utilize this computer the way it was meant to be used, but the internet connection that I have leaves much to be desired.  Bell won't be upgrading in my area for at least 6-12 months from what they tell me and I refuse to switch to Robbers (I mean Rogers).

I hate to go into a long rant but you may be able to fix your problem by just changing the channel on your 2wire router  from ma Bell. They all come with the channel set to a default setting of channel 6 change it to 10. If you are in a high traffic area and they are all set on six you see where this is going.  I have a 2 Wire in a high traffic area and I changed mine and it worked like a charm.
    Hope this helps

  • How to create Install OS X Yosemite for MacBook Pro Retina Early-2015

HELP ME! Unable to Boot from Install OS X Yosemite USB
I just bought a new MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early-2015 and wish to install Windows 8.1. I created Windows Install USB using Boot Camp and Installing Windows. Unfortunately, I erase all SSD by accident.
I created Install OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 USB as guided at https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht201372 using my MacBook Pro Retina Late-2013.
This USB works perfectly on my MacBook Pro Retina Late-2013 but I am unable to boot from Yosemite 10.10.2 Install USB on my new MacBook Pro Retina Early-2015. The white stop sign appeared on black screen all the time. I am stuck here and can't reinstall OS X Yosemite on my new MacBook.
I also can't use Recovery boot as the SSD had been erased.
Please help to show me how to create OS X Install USB that can use with my MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early-2015

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.
It should result in a display with a revolving globe.
If you follow the directions, it will connect you to the Apple servers and you will be able to install the original OSX that came with your MBP.
You will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

  • Cannot play any online video with macbook pro retina Safari. (Youtube, youku, tudou, etc..)

    Help!!!
I'm using Macbook Pro Retina, my version is ME866LLA
    My Safari version is: 7.0.6
I installed the latest version's adobe flash. I'v tried reset settings for safari, and I also checked Security Settings ->Internet Plugins. I do believe all are correct.
But still I can't play any video from any online video websites(Like youtube, youku, tudou etc).
Like below screenshot, always loading, but never start playing. I even fixed the permissions for my disk, still didn't work.
Anybody can tell me what happened?? At the very beginning(when I first got this computer), I think this works, but don't know what happened. I have this issue for long time!!
Anybody can help me? Great thanks!!

    Hi ..
You may be using HTML 5.
Then click:  Use the Default Player
If that doesn't help, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Make sure:   Allow Plug-ins  is selected.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
Back to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Has anyone else had the screws fall out of the bottom of 2012 2013 Macbook Pro Retina?

Apple tried to repair my Macbook Pro Retina when I first got it. They took the back off, replaced the motherboard (which was not the problem), and returned it to me the next day (via FedEx). When I got the machine back, half of the screws on the back shell were falling out... and one was in crooked. Apple told me to take my machine to the authorized computer repair place to have the screws tightened. The screws were tightened and now, they are falling out again! I've read about needed some sort of locktight product to put the screws back in. I don't understand why an authorized repair place would not do this the first time! Can you tell me what the process should be on replacing the screws in the bottom (shell) of the Macbook Pro Retina? I've heard that the shell should be replaced when the new screws are put in. Is this true? (I have AppleCare and will take my machine in next week for repair.... again!) Thanks!

The first repair (when they thought logic board was bad) was a mail-in to Apple. They are the ones that did not re-apply the screws properly and they were falling out when I took computer out of the cardboard shipping box. Called Apple. They said take it to Computer Guys (only auth Apple repair here). Now, a new Mac store in the mall has opened. I think I will take it there this time since it was not done properly at the Computer Guys last time (however, Apple didn't put them back in properly in the FIRST place! Gee. I have Applecare and will stay with Apple repair only. Thanks! I appreciate everyone's input. It has been really helpful! The only reason I have not taken it to an Apple Store is because it is 3 hours away. I will see what this new Mac store has to offer. Oh... and, Apple Support did absolutely nothing for me! Did not even apologize for not fixing it properly the first time... and costing me time and money (as my computer is part of my job). Thanks again! Did Apple do this on purpose to keep us from repairing our own machines? I've seen so many complaints online and I imagine there will be more to come as the machines age and people try to make repairs themselves. Crazy.
