How long should I expect Mountain Lion to download?

I just purchased Mountain Lion. In Launch pad is says it's downloading. What is the typical download time?
What will happen after it's finished?
Thanks!
Billy

As Kurt Lang points out, the full Mountain Lion installer is a very large download and the connection you have determines the limit in speed over which you download rate won't go. But how fast the Apple servers deliver it may be less than that limit, depending on what else they have to do, so it may take longer than the theoretical minimum time. (When iOS 7 was first released, my Mac OS installer download speed dropped to the KBs range on a 50Mbs line.)
Try this: run Activity Monitor in the Utilities Folder and click on Network button at the bottom while the download is proceeding. You'll see the current rate at which you're actually receiving the installer file; it may be lower than your theoretical maximum and it may also not stay constant for the entire download.
Nothing is ever simple...

Forever! Wait about half an hour, if there's no progress in the download bar, you can restart to jostle it. It should pick up the DL from where it left off.

  • HT1338 How long does it take Mountain Lion to download?

I purchased the upgrade about 4 hours ago and it has been supposedly "downloading" since then with no cues or prompts.  How long will this take and when should I expect to have to do something to help it along?  Thanks very much.

Go to sleep. When you get up in the morning it will be waiting for you to install.
Tip: Before you install quit out of the installer, then go to /Applications/ "Install OS X.app" and copy the installer off to some other media, a pocket drive, another hard drive. Then double-click the "Install OS X.app" to do the install. This is because after it's installed the installer self-destructs. So, if you have another Mac you want to install on, or for safe keeping in case you ever need it again, save it.

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

  • How long should I expect my battery to last

How long should I expect my battery to last. It's about a year old.

Here's ehat i responded to another  forum trooper:
Ok here aremy recommendations for your consideration:
Goto the “apple “on your top menu bar. Click 1stoption (About this Mac) a small screen will appear
andclick on “More Info...which will take to a large another smallscreen with Mac Book Pro in huge
    letterslike this: MacBookPro.
Nextgo the “Systems Report” button: press.
NextUnder “Hardware” on the left you'll see “Power” click that.Volia the battery info
Nowlets do an analysis of the info: here's mine a 2 mo. Old 17” MBP:
    ModelInformation:
SerialNumber:     ****************** (not shown by me)
      Manufacturer:     DP
      DeviceName:     ******************(not shown by me)
      PackLot Code:     0
      PCBLot Code:     0
      FirmwareVersion:     406
      HardwareRevision:     1
      CellRevision:     1102
      ChargeInformation:
      ChargeRemaining (mAh):     7806
      FullyCharged:     No
      Charging:     Yes
      FullCharge Capacity (mAh):     8488
      HealthInformation:

      Condition:     Normal
      BatteryInstalled:     Yes
      Amperage(mA):     2131
      Voltage(mV):     12534
OK under“Charge Information” you see my MBP currently at 7806mAh (mstands Milli
which is 10 tothe -3 power) which translates to 7.806 Amp hours in non-techiespeak. As you see on mine Full Charge Capacity is 8.488 Amp hours.
Ok under healthyou see my cycle count is 17. Your very low cycle countreflects that you are not “conditioning” your battery by runningit on battery till 5 minute warning or going to sleep and then fullyrecharging it! You've had it ~18 mo. And your dooming yourbattery to a short life. Condition your battery for a long life.
Please notethis is a super battery 2.131 Amps @ 12.534Volts which Apple says will last approximately 7 hours. Real world experience is significantly less with Lion OS installed.

  • How Would you Know if Mountain Lion is Downloading?

Hi. App Store had me update the info in the billing section which I did. When I updated it and click done it came back to the Mountain Lion page still with the icon Buy App. I clicked that for a second time but it said (something like) that I I've already purchased it. I noticed there's the Mountain Lion logo on the Launchpad and it seems to be downloading but there seems to be no progress bar. It seems like it's not moving although we're only subscribed to about 1Mbps with our landline based broadband.
Is it downloading and have I purchased it properly? I've forgotten what the icon display once you buy something because I don't purchase that often (the last was Lion from last year). I know once it's installed, the icon says installed but when you're downloading it should the app say "downloading" instead of going back to "Buy App"?.
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

    Hello:
If you want to check the progress, go to the app store>purchases.  If something is downloading, the progress bar will be there.

  • HT1175 How long should I expect my Time Capsule to take to back up my MacBook Pro for the first time?

Since I purchased my Time Capsule, I have not been able to back up my mac. The backup process begins but it says it will take 2 days. 2 days later it is frozen and it never finishes. I gave up

This will obviously depend on how much it has to back up - and the first always takes longer.
I have just posted that my TC reported it would take over 3 million days!  I have had similar problems with 2 days and then no finish
Are you using a flash drive in your MBP?

  • About how long should it take to burn slideshow onto a DVD w/ duo core iMac

I posted this under in the general forum and rec'd no responses. Perhaps I should have started here....
    Q. About how long should I expect it to take my iMac to convert, then Burn an iPhoto slideshow (comprised of 130 338kb pictures) onto a DVD? I've done this twice (from iPhote, going to Share, then clicking "DVD") and each time it has worked perfectly. However, it seems to take about an hour or more to complete. Is this normal/ expected?? Please understand that this is my first Mac and I've never had a PC w/ a DVD burner, so I'm not sure what to expect. ..I tried running a search for the question but came up empty.
    Thanks!

I am also doing one right now and it is taking awhile.
The images are very large though, 1 mb each.
They look great, but the transfer from iPhoto to iDvd is taking forever.

  • HT201274 I backed up my iPhone 4 last night, and started the erase contents and settings 4 hrs. ago. How long should it take to complete the erase? Will it automatically be restored?

I backed up my iPhone 4 last night on iCloud, and started the erase all content and settings a little over 4 hrs. ago. How long should I expect it to take to complete this process? Will it automatically do a restore on my phone? The reason I had to do this was because my iPhone 4 would not upgrade the latest IOS. Thanks for any information! Karnysue

Something has gone wrong. That should have happened almost instantly. Force the phone into recovery mode & restore it:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don't see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

  • Sync time? How long should it take?

I have just finished a big project of copying most of our classical CDs in lossless into iTunes.
About how long should I expect it to take to sync 60GB onto my 160GB iPod Classic? There is presently about 15GB on the iPod that will have to be compared to the new material.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mrs H

My hubby and I have an older computer also. I believe that load time is affected by slowwer older computers too. (We have officially named our computer "Frakenstein". We say that its an old man with missing outer shell parts. lol) I load songs a little at a time. A lot of times, no more than about 3 albums at a time. Since our computer is a little slower than most, iTunes has been known to freeze for at least a minute before completeing a transfer. It snaps out of it tho. What's really annoying but that I live with (for right now) is me being impatient and clicking more than once to play a song and it restarting several times before actually playing through. lol That's ok...for now. We plan on upgrading real soon. Hopefully somewhere around Christmas.
    Blessings!

  • How long SHOULD battery last?

I've read 100's of posts on this and have yet to get an answer--how long should I expect my battery to last when my ipod is on, with screen on (auto lock on NEVER), doing nothing, no apps open (actually I removed all apps for this test), wifi OFF, location OFF, everything possible OFF, so just the screen on. This is ipod touch 8gb "3rd" gen, has os 4.2 but problem was same before with os 3.1. I get about 8 hours before battery dies. Is this normal? Warranty is just about up and I need to decide whether to pursue this with Apple. Thanks!

Not as long as if you let the screen turn off. As lllaass mentioned, the screen uses a lot of power and as far as I know, when Apple test an iPod's battery time, it's on the assumption that you do not leave the screen on. Their figures would be based on that and it's largely the reason why watching a video has less battery time that listening to audio.
So if you're not watching video, the battery will last a lot longer if you set the auto lock to - say 1 minute. More to the point, if you're not looking at the screen, why leave it turned on?
My own choice is for the auto lock to kick in after 1 minute. That way, - if I'm browsing the music section, or reading a web page or browsing my Apps, my constant navigation around the Touch keeps the screen on. If I stop doing that and simply listen to music, after 1 minute the sreen turns off and battery time is extended.
You say that you have yet to get an answer to how long the battery should last. If you check the technical specifications for the latest iPod Touch, http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html you'll see that playback time for video is 7 hours and playback time for audio is 40 hours from full charge. So if you have auto lock on never, I suggest that 8 hours is probably reasonable since it's the virtually same as watching video.
