How long should the backup take as part of the iOS 5 update?

Any ideas why my iOS5 update can't get past the backing up stage? I've left it running for 12 hours, but the update process never gets past the scrolling message about backing up.

Well at last its done! I ended the current restore, backed up to icloud instead of itunes and then did a full restore. Hey presto! 10 mins later everything was tickity boo! all contacts, calenders music and even the photos were back! Needless to say I wont be getting the new iphone on my upgrade! Getting very fed up of the crap that goes along with it. Time for an andriod phome me thinks! Sorry apple but this is definitley one customer that you've lost!

I am having this problem.  At first with the new iPhone 5, and then with the iPad 2.  I am not sure why this is happening.
My gut feeling is this is an iO6 issue and here's why -
The problem mainly occurs with apps.  I have about 150 apps, and when I plugged in the phone, iTunes went to sync all of them.  The process would hang up after about 20 - 30 apps were loaded onto the phone. I could tell where about the process hung up because the apps on the phone showed up as "waiting".
Then on the iPad 2 I plugged in to sync and saw there was a huge "Other" component in my storage.  It required me to restore the iPad 2 from backup.  With this restore the same issues occurred - putting the apps back on the iPad would hang up.  The videos on the iPad also got stuck - maybe after about 10 hours of videos transfered iTunes crashed.
My solution has been to soft reset the device, restart Windows, and continue the process until it's complete.  This is remarkably inefficient and time-intensive but everything works with patience.
I have been wondering if others have had these same problems.

    Yes.

  • HT3231 how long should a migration take? Mine says about 24 hours.

How long should a migration take? Mine says about 24 hours.

I would always recommend migrating from a Time Machine backup drive...it's the most reliable (and fastest) means of moving everything over...and it's the most convenient, since you don't need to have two computers up and running to accomplish the backup.
If you'd like to some good reading on migrating everything over, I highly recommend the following site:

    I hope this helps!
    Congratulations on your new iMac.

There's no fixed time. If it's been accepted - presumably you've been given a URL? - it should appear reasonably soon. However it can dake some days before it turns up in the search results. The podcast image, if you have one, may also take some days to appear.

  • How long should "Disk Repair" take?

I have a G Raid 4 T external drive that I recently had shipped back from my editor. She did not use the original packing box and I fear the drive could be damaged. It starts up okay and doesn't make any suspicious noises - but it doesn't mount. I ran disk utility and it told me I need to run "Disk Repair." I've been doing this - for more than an hour so far. How long should this typically take? Should I try something else?

It's usually related to the size of the drive, which in your case, is pretty big.

  • HT4847 How long should back up take?

How long should it take to back up my phone?!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
As Julian states it is somewhat impossible to say. However as a guide, many peoples Internet or upload speed is limited to around 1 Mb per second, at that rate each gigabyte that needs to backup will take around 2 1/4 hours.

  • ID CS2 Windows XP Pro - How long should adding pages take?

I am using InDesign CS2 in Windows XP Pro. I have an ID book file with 13 sections, approximately 20-25 pages in each section. There are approximately 4,000-5,000 images on the pages (total on all pages). I am using auto page numbering and am trying to add three blank pages to the beginning of the second section. It's been working for about two hours so far to make the change. Is this normal? I'm a Macintosh guy, so I'm not sure how long this process should take on a Windows machine. When I open the task manager, it says that InDesign is using 47-54% CPU (it fluctuates between 47 and 54%). I've quit all other apps (except system-related), even though they weren't using any of the processor, but it hasn't sped things up. In the menu bar at the top of the main ID window, it says "not responding," but I've seen that before and then it's started working again.
Is this normal? How long should I wait? I know adding an odd number of pages means that items on pages in the sections after the one to which I'm adding pages have to be shifted from right-hand pages to left-hand pages, but should it be taking this long?
I appreciate any input or suggestions. Thank you.
    Lloyd Lathrop

    Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I'm actually not sure how these files were set up (before I was here), and I haven't dug into them yet, but I'm trying to fix them (each book file is a 300-page catalog, and we have 10 catalogs...pray for me!). I thought there were 2GB of RAM, so that's one place to start. I'll try to add the pages with all the other sections closed first. I went through each section and they almost all had "sections" beginning on an internal page within the section in addition to the first page of the section. I want "automatic page numbering," so I unchecked "start section" (or whatever it says) on those internal pages.
I'll requisition more RAM and keep plugging away. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • How long should Asset encoding take?

I am burning a DVD of a one hour soccer game. The asset encoding process sure seems to take forever. I am well over two hours of encoding.

Hi - I'm trying to burn a 1hr 5min movie to iDVD from iMovie 4 using my G4 PB with 1.33 GHz and 768mb DDR SDRAM - I've got about 32GB free on my hard drive, but the movie is taking forever to finish 'asset encoding'. It's been doing it for about 24 hours now! There is a lot of different music files and transitions used throughout the film, but has this happened to anyone else? I'm not even sure if I should be leaving my Powerbook on for this long. Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated and how long should I leave it before I give up!?! (I can still use other programs - the whole thing doesn't seemed to have crashed)
    Thanks, Paul

  • HT1766 how long does a backup take

How long does it usually take for a backup?

5 minutes to your computer. iCloud backups are highly dependent on your Internet connection speed.

  • Ipod Touch Update question; How long does a backup take for you?

I have updated my ipod before and the backup took a few hours lets say around 5 or so... and i was just wondering because this is the second time it has asked me to do this for a new patch and i started around 3:40 p.m. and it is now 6:20 p.m..... the progress only has a 11 bars out of the entire bar (windows xp)... so i was wondering is somthing wrong i also want to know how i would disconnect it because it is taking to long and i might have to leave and i want to take it with me.
also i dont usually back my stuff up and it has like 600 mbs of apps, atleast 5gigs of music and a few videos with some pictures. (8 gig ipod touch first gen got it before speakers /cry)

I have, just now, about 9 GBs of stuff on my 2G 16 GB and I'd say 8 minutes but I think it's less than that.
I'm constantly switching play lists and changing movies and TV shows as well as pod casts (I won't miss Rachel Maddows if I can help it.) so sync gets a work out.
It's true I've only got 3 apps so if you've got pages that might make a sync longer but not that much longer!
Something isn't working right with your sync.

  • How long should library rebuild take?

I realize this would be a relative answer depending on config. but just looking for some point of reference.
Running AP 2.1.4 on iMac 2.8, 2G, unfortunately library is on HD (but not for long). AP library is about 200 GB and 25000 images.
Forced to rebuild library, started about 28 hrs ago and the progress bar hasn't moved since. It rushed to about the 75% point and has been there for 28 hrs. BTW, the the dialog/progress box is labeled "Checking library consistency" and the status is "Running VACUUM on database"
I don't believe it's stuck because the Activity Monitor shows some activity under the Aperture process name.
I just want to know (based on this data), am I almost there? Do I have another hour, another day, another week. Is the "risk" of force quitting as bad as I'm picturing it?
Would really like to get back to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Same issue here. My Library got damaged when a drive was disconnected without being properly unmounted. Aperture gave me an error saying is could not read the Library and quit.
I then launched Aperture holding Command and Alt and selected Rebuild in the Library First Aid panel. Over 12hrs later I had to force quit the process as I had to move the Machine.
OK, I'll take a SWAG at this. I rebuild my Library of about 10,000 images (150 GB) about once a year (whether it needs it or not). Rebuilt it prior to upgrading to AP3 and then, once again, after AP3. A full on rebuild takes about 20-30 minutes. This is internal or on Firewire of some form. USB is painfully slow, but it still should not take more than twice the time. I would say that something is wrong. (Sorry for stating the obvious.)
Looking at the quote above, I must ask, did you try to repair the disk first, with Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior, or similar? If not, I suspect that that is your problem. If your disk is broken, the library may never get rebuilt. An Aperture Library is simply a pile of files, but if the operating system can't keep them straight, then Aperture will never be able to rebuild the pointers.
Not much, I grant you, but I hope this is helpful.
