How long should the MBP battery last?

HI, I have had my MBP 17inch for a few months now and its seems that the battery is rubbish! I generally get about 2-2.5 hours out of it, even when just surfing the internet. I calibrate it regularly, dim the brightness, turn off aiport etc.
Its says on the webiste I should get 5.75 hours! How long does other people's last? I was wondering if it had anything to do that I have the Hi Res version 1920-by-1200. Would it use more power?

Use the iStat widget, not CoconutBattery. FYI, the "real" values should be checked in Utilites > System Profiler > Power.
Your "original capacity" is 6300 mAh. That's a nominal value, which is why yours is actually higher - new batteries range from 6200 - 6700 mAh, approximately. The 5500 mAh is the correct value for the 15" MBP - CoconutBattery can't tell the difference.
Be sure to properly calibrate your battery every couple of months.
RE your original post, 2.5-3.5 hours of battery life is normal, depending mostly on screen brightness.

That listed 7 hours is with very limited use. Low screen brightness, low keyboard backlight, No WiFi or bluetooth.
Most I have ever gotten from my 15" 2011 model is around 5-6 hours and that was with very light use. Just Web, Chrome, and email, thunderbird, and Wifi.

They did say 12-14 hours, but as is always the case with such estimates, they invariably quote the 'best possible scenario' and almost never mirror 'real world' conditions.
If, from a fully charged position, you simply switch on your nano, and set it to continuously play through a long set of songs, with EQ off, backlight off, modest volume (50%) don't touch it during playback, then you might just get somewhere near this figure - and if you don't then it's either not been conditioned properly or it's faulty.
If you use it like me, daily for a couple of hours, with 2 secs backlight and switch songs regularly, using fairly high volumes then 6-8 hours is more likely. It'll even drain when it's not in use, even in sleep mode, albeit very slowly. They also tend to drain more quickly before they've been through their first few charge cycles (the conditioning period).
Personally I haven't got a problem with this though I can understand why some people have. It's not very impressive in this respect. Apple should be able to come up with something much better - maybe they should talk to Sony

I would say that's normal. Cellular uses more power than wifi. Your screen brightness is also a factor. Lower the screen brightness & battery will last longer.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

I'm nearly ready to pull the trigger and get my first MBR 15 inch, but something keeps nagging. The Battery. THE BATTERY. Yes the battery is relatively nice, and one might think insignificant in the grand scheme, but IT'S GLUED INSIDE THE COMPUTER, and basically IRREPLACEABLE unless you pay some ridiculous cost, my guess is around $400. So how long is the battery expected to last? 4 years? No battery lasts 4 years. It's mind-boggling to me why Apple decided to glue the battery. After 2 years of moderate to heavy use of your MBR you're just expected to fork over $400 for a new battery? A NEW BATTERY?!!!!! Realistically how long will the MBR battery last before it gives up the ghost and has to be plugged in 24/7?

It depends on the amount of files you are transferring and the method you are using to transfer your files (Wi-Fi or Ethernet). Both methods are slow and migration would take hours if you need to transfer a lot of files.
I only recommend you to use Windows Migration Assistant if you need to transfer a small amount of files. If not, it is much better to copy your files to an external drive and transfer them to your Mac

How Long Should a T41p Battery Last?

Hi guys. My first post!
I was given a T41p and when the charger is not plugged in the battery can drop from, say, 75% to 25% in an instant. To me this seems quite short for a brand new battery.
I read some posts on other forums before my purchase with people saying their battery lasts up to 5 hours. I think they were talking about 9 cell batteries but wouldn't that mean a 6 cell should last closer to 4?

it depends on whether you run it in power saving mode, with low backlight and low cpu speed...................... so 2 hours sound reasonable for T41p....

im endin my senior year of hs and ill need this computer to last me thru 4 yrs of college. is that a realistic expectation of the MBP or am i just kiddin myself?

You're not kidding yourself. But it's hard to answer this absolutely, without knowing what your requirements are. If you'll use the machine for email, web, office apps, etc., I'd say it will definitely last for 4 years, no problem. But if you want always be able to run the latest and greatest 3D-intensive video games on it, I'd say it definitely won't last 4 years. It's very likely at the end of 4 years there will be video games out there that you won't be able to run on a maxed out first-gen MacBook. But then, no computer I know of will keep up with game developers for 4 years.
Do you plan to do heavy graphics (video/imagery) work in college, or CAD, or audio recording/mixing? In these cases, some of the tools you'll use may release new versions that push the envelope for a MacBook near the end of the 4 years. But even in these cases, I think the MacBook will suffice. Worst case scenario, these apps will work, but slower than you'd like, near the end of the 4 years.

The usefull life of an iPad battery is about 1000 full discharge/charge cycles, by Apple's standards (i.e. at 1000 cycles, if not abused, it should retain about 80% of its original capacity). But, a Lithium cell begins to loose capacity from the minute it is assembled at the factory. It will continue to loose capacity over time, whether used or not. So, if your iPad is a couple of years old and has had a lot of use (that is many discharge/charge cycles) then it will inherently last less and less on a charge as time goes by. Also, if it has sat unused for very long periods (several or many months) it will have degraded much faster than if used regularly.
As others have said, it also depends on your settings, and just what apps and things you normally run on it.

When I bought this computer, I was expecting to get at least 3 years of use out of it, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any long term experience with the prior flat-pannel iMac's. What do I need to do to get help? I've had so many problems with mine, all just after the 3-year extended warranty expired. Even in talking to supervisors, I'm hard-pressed to get anyone to listen. I finally got a replacement disc for the Apple Care which came with my warranty. I had never opened it before it expired, and it had been incompatible with my system since I'd bought it (but I didn't know, since I'd never used it). It took hours of calls and being on-hold to get a supervisor to approve even a replacement disc, which costs Apple little or nothing. The disc didn't work, neither did any of my System Restore discs, the discussions forum couldn't figure out what was ever wrong with my iMac, and now I sit here with all of our iPod music and family videos/photos on an external hard drive which our PC won't read and our iMac won't extract (see my post question about the blank disc). To get support, all I get is the standard line of, "that'll be $49 for each question, valid for five days of support for each question asked." If there's a customer service line where they really help, I'm really needing it! Who do I call to get it working again? I BEGGED my husband to buy me this computer, telling him that Macs were so much easier than PCs. I hadn't worked on a Mac system since early in 1998, and that was in a corporate environment where the IT department handled any problems so I never had to worry about it. My current computer-programming friends can't help at all, because all they know is PC. I really feel lost in a vacuum with my beloved Mac, which is sucking our bank account dry with all of the necessary upgrades and support which come free with a PC.

I recently went to the apple store in Covent garden and had a battery replaced for my Mac Book Pro 2009 edition.
After fully charging the mac the percentage guage meter displays the battery is losing power fast. 1% increments goes down every 5 minutes even if I have only a browser which is opened and no other running applications.
My recent test after a fully charged mac book pro allowed me a maximum use time is 2 hours!
I have friends and family members who have the same model as me and their mac book when running on battery, shows that the laptop has about 6 hours use. They are able to run multiple applications and use sites such as Youtube and still get a good 4 hours of use.
Anyway, I have booked an appointment with a Mac Genius for tomorrow to look into this issue.
I thought I'd just ask the community to find out if any of you can help.
