How long to upgrade macbook pro from current

I keep hearing people saying that they are elegiable for an upgrade. How does this work?  I had my MBP since May 2011 with the extended warranty.  I have 10.8.4 installed.

There is no other "upgrade". I'm guessing the "upgrade" you have been hearing about was the "transition" upgrade that was provided by Apple for Macs that were purchased with Lion around the time that Mountain Lion was introduced. They were eligible to get a free upgrade to Mountain Lion....
Cheers,

    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HT1338 How to upgrade MacBook Pro from OS 10.5 (Leopard) to Mountain Lion?

How do I upgrade a MacBook Pro from OS 10.5 (Leopard) to Mountain Lion?  Do I need to upgrade in stages, i.e. to Snow Leopard, then to Lion, then to Mountain Lion, or can it be a more direct route?
    R.

    Hi Richard,
You need at least 10.6.6 installed to get & use the App store for purchase & download, & just read that Lion/10.7 is no longer available!???
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
It's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account, it may be free from Apple.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

Macs that will support OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
As usual, the newer the Mac the better:
    • MacBook Pro – 13″ from mid 2009 or later, 15″ from late 2007 and newer, 17″ from late 2007 and newer
    • MacBook Air – late 2008 and newer
    • iMac – models from mid 2007 and newer
    • MacBook – 13″ aluminum from 2008, 13″ from 2009 and newer
    • Mac Mini – early 2009 and newer
    • Mac Pro – early 2008 models and newer
    • XServe – early 2009 models and newer
Macs that are NOT expected to support OS X Mountain Lion
Older Macs and those with weaker GPU’s will likely be left behind:
    • Anything with an Intel GMA 950 or x3100 integrated graphics card
    • Anything with an ATI Radeon X1600
    • MacBook models released prior to 2008
    • Mac Mini released prior to 2007
    • iMac models released prior to 2007
    • Original MacBook Air
This list of compatible and incompatible Macs and system requirements are based off of the first OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview and may be subject to change, we will update when we learn more about the specifics. OS X Mountain Lion will be released this summer but presumably long before that we will know precise system requirements and what Macs are and are not supported by the new version of OS X. Stay tuned.

  • How long will this MacBook Pro last me?

I recently have received a mid-2009 macbook pro as a gift. I have upgraded the software to Mountain Lion (and most likely going to upgrade to Mavericks whenever it comes out). I am going to become a high school senior in the upcoming months. I was wondering how long this laptop would last me! I like gaming, but the graphics aren't that good even on low quality, but I'm sure this laptop will be fine for my last year of high school and til the end of college prehaps?
    Thanks,
    Christopher!
    Edit:
I understand there isn't just a breakdown date or timer, but I am just asking for a guess from the community! Sorry for the confusion if there was any.
    Thank you!

Your machine is about 4 years old and in it's end of life stage for a laptop.
It al depends how much abuse the previous owner did to it, how much wear on the keyboard/Superdrive and on the graphics etc.
I'd say another year or two and it's done.
The reason gaming is bad it's because they are designed for PC towers and the latest graphics which a laptop you can't upgrade.
Also the many OS X operating system versions also has a part as later OS X versions slow down older machines.
If you want to 3D game, then get a PS4 or a Windows 7/8 3D gaming tower and upgrade the video card every couple of years to a better one.
That's the only way, Mac's can't upgrade the video card anymore and new 3D games need better graphics.
The only way one can keep a Mac a very long time is to take exceeding great care of it, all the wear and tear on external devices, then there is a limit to upgrading operating systems and Apple will begin denying security updates as well.
    Good luck

  • How long to transfer macbook pro into imac

I just got my new imac. Started migration from my good old macbook pro through wifi & than connected ethernet cable. 4 hours have gone by now.... Is it normal? How long should this process take more or less ?
    Tks

Thanks for replying. My question: if i plagued an ethernet cable while migration was already on, did the computers change and now migrate through ethernet? The only difference i noticed after connecting the ethernet cable is, the notice about connecting ethernet for a faster migration disappeared. But that was 2 hours ago.... . After how many hours should i start to be suspicious?

  • How long does the macbook pro 13 retina battery last

I just recently got my macbook and was wondering this because i am a bit scared. Apple says their battery lasts around 9 hours, what does that mean? If just doing simple work like pages and other programs a like, my battery will last up to 9 or 10 hours but that is when my brightness is less than 60%, it lasts maybe 8 hours at full. However, when I'm doing searches on safari like going on websites and youtube, my battery only lasts about 6.5 hours at 40% brightness, for some reason if i am on netflix it will last longer, maybe for about 7.5 hours 40% brightness. I personally would be happy with 6+ hours and keeping it at a low brightness but if I'm supposed to get more battery than why not?! P.S. When i go on activity monitor it says that none of the applications are using more than 5% (except activity monitor).

    Hey samraymond,
Welcome to the Apple family, I’m glad to hear that you have purchased a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Our marketing pages state that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display can last up to 9 hours. However, please keep in mind that battery life will definitely vary by use and configuration. Our technical specifications page provides more information on the testing that was conducted to determine battery life:
Apple - MacBook Pro with Retina display - Technical Specifications
    http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
Testing conducted by Apple in July 2014 using preproduction 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7–based 15-inch MacBook Pro units, preproduction 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7–based 15-inch MacBook Pro units, and preproduction 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5–based 13-inch MacBook Pro units. The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular websites with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The HD movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 720p content with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The standby test measures battery life by allowing a system, connected to a wireless network and signed in to an iCloud account, to enter standby mode with Safari and Mail applications launched and all system settings left at default. Battery life varies by use and configuration. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

  • Upgrade macbook pro from  10.5.8 to os x lion

any help will be apprecated since I cant figure it out from the apple website.  I want to be able to use icloud on my macbook pro.

If your MBP is capable of being upgraded to Lion, you could either purchase a Snow Leopard disk, install that and update it to 10.6.8, then purchase and download Lion through the App Store, or you could buy the flash drive with the Lion installer from the Apple Store.  However, you need to check system requirements carefully and make sure all your apps are compatible with Lion.  And I wouldn't even consider the upgrade unless you have a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.

I would suggest posting your question in either an Apple TV or Macbook Pro forum, this is an iMac forum.

  • How to buy a MacBook Pro from the Online Store

Well, I'm Indian, and apple does not have an apple store in India(not even an online one). I need the new MacBook pro with 16 Gigs of ram in it.
I do regularly travel to Australia and am considering buying one from their online store. But it asks for an AUSTRALIAN CARD. Did I just get something wrong or I need an Australian Credit card(if that's the case, I'm screwed). Also can I use an international credit card or am I done for????

You could also try contacting an Apple retail store in Australia and see what their policy is for an in-store purchase and if you can reserve a unit for when you are traveling there.

  • How long to boot MacBook pro 13" late 2011?

It takes 1 minute 30 seconds to startup my macbook pro 13" late 2011 (2.4ghz i5 processor, 4GB RAM)
This seems like a long time? I have Microsoft Office and Photoshop installed, will this slow it down?
    Thanks!

if you have a normal hard drive installed - it usually takes a minute to desktop when you power up.
check your login items to see what's loading when you first power up your Macbook.
you can also go to disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair them if errors are found then restart your Macbook.
see if that helps your booting time.
    good luck

  • How long did your MacBook Pro take to arrive?

My MBP is coming direct from Apple but as it was purchased via a reseller I have no tracking.
Its been over 9 working days already, but the apple site says 2-3 days is typical?
I'm soooo excited but its quickly turning to disappointment with every afternoon.
How long did yours take to arrive?

    Hi there,
When I ordered my custom MBP on June 25, it also said 2-3 days to ship. It shipped the 28th from China and arrived via FedEx on July 3rd. That was with standard shipping. I'm not sure if you used expedited shipping or not, but fyi, it is expedited only after going through customs - i.e. 2 day shipping will mean 2 days after going through customs. Depending on when you ordered, especially if you ordered right before or after Independence Day, it could be a day or two extra to process.
Good luck, and I hope you enjoy it when it finally arrives.

  • How long should my macbook pro battery charge last before needing to be recharged

My macbook pro goes from 100% fully charged to zero in one day of light use.  Is that normal?  It seems to hold a charge for less time now than in the past.  Do I need a new battery?  Thanks, Gina

Watching video depletes the battery faster than typing a letter. My MBP battery will go down from 100% to about 65% (sometimes down to 50%)  in about 3 - 4 hours if I do nothing but browse this site and possibly watch a short video. It also depends on the screen brightness settings and a host of other things. If you only use it for 2 hours, then there is a problem and I'd take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.
