How long will the PowerPC G5 iMacs be available?

Has there been any word on this? Does anybody out there know how long Apple will continue to sell the iMac G5? I was planning on getting one in the spring, but now I am worrying that they will no longer be available by that time.
The thing is, I am a graphic design student and I will be using my new iMac primarily to run Adobe Creative Suite CS1 and Macromedia 8.0, which I already own and use on my iBook G4. These are "must have" programs for me that absolutely have to work, and with all this talk about Intel compatibility, emulation, and so on, I don't have any desire to be a part of what looks to be a problematic transition phase.
So what does everyone think? Should I borrow some money and rush out to buy a G5 right now, or should I wait and hope they are still available a few months down the road?

Hi Scott,
"...still available a few months down the road?"
It has always been the case, and I don't see why this time would be different:
As soon as a new model comes out, the previous is unavailable from Apple Store.
However, Apple Refurbished are known to be good deals.
You can hope also that some retail shop still has one of them in stock, but this doesn't happen often anymore like with the G3 iMacs in the past.
Adobe Creative Suite CS1 and Macromedia 8.0:
The new Intel Macs (iMac and MacBook Pro) will be able to run any OS X software, thanks to Rosetta.
The problem with them is that they cannot run Classic apps anymore.
I'm not sure about what I would do if I were you.
I think in six months there will be A LOT of excellent opportunities concerning G5 Macs, like for example a used PowerMac with still two years of AppleCare Protection Plan and plenty of extra RAM...
At the same time I don't think there should be too many problems with the new (very good) move to Intel.
Hope this helps...
Axl

  • How long will the new 2011 imacs last?

Based on older imacs and types of precoessors how long would a new imac be expected to last

Also depends on what you mean. Do you mean physically last or remain functionally viable? Old Macs from the '80s are still ticking along, look on eBay.
While all manufactured products are subject to being lemons, I think it's far more likely that your machine will become "functionally obsolete" before it dies. My late-2004 iMac G5 (2GB RAM) is just now starting to show its age since some developers are starting to drop PowerPC support, but other than that it works like the day it was new.

  • How long will the Photoshop CS6 Beta be active for?

    Hi
I would like to know how long will the Photoshop CS6 Beta be active for. As a VFX Artist I will be testing CS6 in a production environment to improve workflow. Some of the features I want to be able to use won't happen for a few weeks yet as I'm awaiting content. I just basically would like to know that If I install CS6 now, will it expire in a few weeks or on 30 days? If it's very limited, I'd rather wait than have it expire on be before I can test it properly.
    Thanks.
    Mike.

Please see FAQ post regarding beta duration

Since the maximum OS X version for an eMac is 10.5, how are you running OS X 10.7.5 on the eMac?

How long will the progress indicator spin before safe mode progress bar shows up?

Not a good sign,  your HD is failing or has serious block problems. It might be possible to reformate the drive and start over.
or something more agressive to do the repair, like Disk Warrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
You need a backup plan in place here.

I want to use a Shuffle as an on-hold device...how long will it continue to repeat?

Until the battery runs out of charge...which varies depending on the power consumed by the device plugged into the earphone jack..."*Up to 12 hours of music playback*" according to Apple.

  • How long will the MBP honestly last?

im endin my senior year of hs and ill need this computer to last me thru 4 yrs of college. is that a realistic expectation of the MBP or am i just kiddin myself?

You're not kidding yourself. But it's hard to answer this absolutely, without knowing what your requirements are. If you'll use the machine for email, web, office apps, etc., I'd say it will definitely last for 4 years, no problem. But if you want always be able to run the latest and greatest 3D-intensive video games on it, I'd say it definitely won't last 4 years. It's very likely at the end of 4 years there will be video games out there that you won't be able to run on a maxed out first-gen MacBook. But then, no computer I know of will keep up with game developers for 4 years.
Do you plan to do heavy graphics (video/imagery) work in college, or CAD, or audio recording/mixing? In these cases, some of the tools you'll use may release new versions that push the envelope for a MacBook near the end of the 4 years. But even in these cases, I think the MacBook will suffice. Worst case scenario, these apps will work, but slower than you'd like, near the end of the 4 years.

  • How long will the activation servers be down?

I just returned my phone to factory settings and I was going to restore it from a back up but I can't even activate my phone. HELP!

The Apple Support Page, http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/systemstatus/  says there are <1% of users affected and
    "01/08/2012 09:43 PST
Users may be unable to access Mail. Service is expeted to be restored by 8pm PST today.
All messages will be delivered at that time."
As I reply (01/08/2012 05:46 pm CST) we still have about 4 hrs (if I haven't screwed up the time zone conversion) to wait.

Apple says the server is down, but that it should have been back up by noon.  It's still out.  Anybody else having this problem?

  • For How long will the posting threads last

    Hello Every One,
I 'd like to know, if i am collection all the necessary links which has the corresponding thread ids mentioned along with them. What would be the duration of their lasting.
please give complete details on this.
    Regards,
    karthik

    Kartik,
In general (or in ideal world of REST web) the link ID is permanent, i.e. it lasts forever.
As an 3.5 years SDN-er I can say that posts are not removed at all if they are not removed immediately (due to offensive text or illegal requests for commercial SAP materials or similar). But in practice SDN team changed at least twice the format of link URL-s. So be prepared to alter your "favorites" -- the thread/message ID's is stable but links themselves "evolve"

  • How Long Does the iMac's Battery Last

Hi. How long will the iMac's battery last if you use it 8 hours (how about for 16 hours) a day and shut it down when you go to bed.
    Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

As long as you leave the machine plugged into a live power source, even when it has been turned off it will still draw a bit of power to maintain PRAM and the clock chip, and will not use the battery.
The battery is used only when there is no othe source of power available. And, it is not recharged in the iMac.

  • HT4500 How long will it take to transfer 400gb from time capsule to my iMac using mountain lion

I did a clean install on my iMac. Now I cannot access my backups. I can see the time capsule, but when I open time machine, I only have today  which is the newly installed system. I am now trying to use migration assistant to grab my files. I got to where I choose my time machine and entered my password. Now I don't see any action. How long will the transfer take?  My 500 gb time capsule is full. Should I be seeing something on my screen.

This depends on what the connection type is for the computer to the Time Capsule - wireless or Ethernet, how much data are involved, what generation of Time Capsule, and whether the transfers are to an HDD or SSD.

  • I rented a movie from the iTunes app....how long will this movie stay on my iPad?

I have had my iPad for a couple of years but just now rented a movie for a flight I will be on....how long will the movie stay on my iPad....can you watch it more than once?  Also any awesome games out there to download that will not take wifi or data to play them?   Thanks!

The unwatched rental will stay on the device for 30 days. If you are in the U.S. once you start watching the movie you have 24 hours to watch it as many times as you like, and you have 48 hours in other countries. Bear in mind that if you even start the movies for just two or three seconds and stop it, that starts the timer for the 24 hour or 48 hour time period, so don't start that timers until you are ready to watch the movie.
I'm not a real big gamer anymore , so I can't help you there.
