How loud is Mac Pro compared to Mac mini G4?

I use a 1,25 Ghz Mac mini G4. At normal use it is almost inaudible. I would like to know, how much louder a Mac Pro is, compared to the mini.

I have both a G4 Mac mini (the "stealth" 1.5GHz model with 64MB VRAM) and the 2.66GHz Mac Pro. Under light load or when in idle the Mac mini makes much less noise than does the Mac Pro. However, the Mac mini fan can ramp up pretty loud when it has been under heavy load for more than a minute or two and in that case the mini is louder than anything I've yet heard from my Mac Pro. If you do little more than browse the internet, write emails, use Word/iWork, run iTunes, and/or watch a few low resolution movies then the Mac mini will be quieter. However, if you encode video, run extensive filters in Photoshop, or play 3D games then the Mac Pro will probably be quieter. This assumes, of course, that you have the passively cooled NVIDIA 7300 card and not one of the higher-end video cards which require their own fan to keep them cool.
Now the Intel-based Mac mini is a different story. I've used one of the dual-core Mac minis and it always seems to be quiet, so if you want near silence then one of the current Intel Mac minis is the way to go (IMO).

  • How do I reinstall Leopard on my mac pro from my mac book pro?

How do I reinstall my Snow Leopard os into my mac pro from my mac book pro?  I have the disks, both run on Snow Leopard.  I am have a grey screen problem and nothing has fixed it yet, so I was told to reinstall in from another computer because when I tried to load from disk to mac pro the mac pro would start to load, but then stop at the same place.

Once you get it to work, be sure to download and apply the lastest SL COMBO updater. for 10.6.8 (or any later version). This will ensure that the latest drivers & such for that newer hardware gets installed and the resulting OS can run optimally.

  • Data transfer very slow on mac pro!! mac H/W unable to fit specifications.

    Hi,
I am installinginternal disks on the quad mac pro and the transfer ratet in the mac are very slow!!!
the disks are: barracuda 7200.10 disks, 500 GB. Sta II 300, max ST3500630AS firmware 3.AAE . throughput:300mb.jumpred off to get the 300.
MAC tells that the QUAD MAC Pro equipment (2x2.66ghz dualcore intel xeon) comes with a 3.Gigabit specification/ 300MB/sec. (Intel ESB2 AHCI, speed: 3.0 Gigabit. AHCI version 1.10 supported)...
And the benchmarks of the disk ST3500630AS show maximum 80MB/sec and a minimin of 37.3MB/sec, average 63.1 MB/sec. (anandtech tests).
According to seagate.com the maximum sustained data transfer rate:78MB/s
but in the mac the reallity is different: I am getting a transfer rate of 22MB/sec!!!!! . with out any application running and only making copy of the files!!!!
that means that the mac is only providing only 1/3 of the expected transfer rate for the disks..
so, is there a way that the MAC Pro gets all the normal transfer rate for those disks???
Is the Quad MAC Pro hardware unable to get the maximum throughput of the disks???
It seems that the mac is unable to get also the average transfer rate of those disks.. how to correct it???
    thanks a lot
    Alberto
ps. just for fun: I am getting a faster transfer rate from an old power pc ,and old pc, and firewire 400 and old ide disks!!! (36MB/seg!!!)

    Yup.
BThe latest Mac Pro are better, so if you have a new or 2 month old unit, Seagate should work, though I think there should be later firmware.
Some would say those drives take the cake or woRSe.

    SEAGATE PUZZLES
+Firmware version 3.AEE or later solves the slow sustained large block write speed issue for a single 7200.10 inside the Mac Pro.+
+The remaining performance issue is slow small random read speeds for one, two, three or four drives. No matter how many drives you configure in RAID 0 sets, the average random read speed for combined block sizes from 64K to 1024K is less than 30MB/s (based on QuickBench 3 testing).+
+Until Seagate fixes this, we can't recommend the 7200.10 series as the ideal boot drive for the Mac Pro (or Power Mac).+

Adobe Premiere CC 2014, regularly licensed (Mac Pro early 2008, Mac OSX 10.9.5, Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB).
    Hi guys,
since the CC2014 version of Premiere has been released (on Creative Cloud) I'm experiencing - really often - the MEDIA PENDING (yellow background) issue... even if the clip can be found right clicking and selecting "reveal in finder" or "reveal in project", in the timeline the clip can't be played. Not to mention the many many problems the app is causing stopping working suddenly and obligating me to restart the system to have it regularly working again (usually it stops reproducing the video, only the audio stays alive, but the playhead seems freezes there where I left it).
One more problem: all the app (and customized) keyboard shortcuts are gone. Totally disappeared (this happened just after the last update, CC v8.1 Caravan. Synching from CC was unsuccessful.
Please don't suggest me to contact the adobe italian service to have an help... the last time (almost the same problem) they just made me lose time with some basic procedure checks that I knew were not leading me anywhere.
I ask sorry for my polemic tone, it's a few months that Adobe Premiere is not working anymore as before. And you can't immagine how many hours I've lost.
    Thank you very much,
    My best regards,
    Stefano Bianchi.

Guys, would you suggest me a new graphic card (in case, which model on this Mac - would be great a 4 or 6 MB VRAM GPU) or a new Mac Pro? This is still a great machine, but it's starting becoming unusable due to this Premiere issue (that is day by day more severe).
Thanks a lot for any suggestion,

Do you have a local network setup either wired or wireless? If so, then have both computers connected to the network. Enable File Sharing on both computers in Sharing preferences. Select the startup drive on each computer. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the box labeled, Shared Folder.
You can now keep both computers in sync by using a third-party backup/sync utility that will work with a network setup such as:

  • Slow render speed:  Mac Pro vs. Mac Mini (FCP Vs. FCE)

About a year ago I purchased a Mac mini (2gb ram, 2.0 dual core processor running OS 10.4) and using Final Cut Express. Understandable, rending and exporting took awhile.
A week ago I upgraded to a Mac Pro (10gb ram, 2.8 8-core processors running OS 10.5) and Final Cut Pro Studio 6. I assumed that I would see a rather dramatic decrease in in the time it takes to render (and to export).
However, the I am seeing virtually no difference whatsoever in rendering speed between the Mac mini running FCE and the Mac Pro running FCP. I'm very disappointed.
What gives? I'm editing virtually the same material and it's just as slow as before.
Any ideas anyone on what may be causing this?

I am generally using SD video imported (log and transfer) directly from the hard drive of a Sony HDR-SR12 camera, although I also use captured video from a Panasonic HVX200 camera. My "Easy Setup" setting has been DV-NTSC for both Final Cut Express and now Final Cut Studio.
The rendering that I'm talking about, for example, is when I put an effect on a video track that requires rendering before I can play it.
I'm then typically exporting the finished video to a Quick Time movie DV-NTSC setting.
Again, there is no improvement at all in the time it takes to render and export using the Mac PRO vs. the Mac mini using identical settings. I would think there should be a significant improvement.

  • Conecting 15 machinse (8 mac Pro + 7 Power Mac G4) to one mac mini.

I need to Conecting 15 machinse (8 mac Pro + 7 Power Mac G4) to one mac mini at the same time with out destrict me after 10 or 11 logins or i need the Software "Apple File Share Server or Apple Share IP instaler to run on Mac OS 9.2.2.

    Thanks for the advice!
I'll look into getting a good quality UPS in the meantime, however the situation changed the other day when I came home from work.
I turned on the Mac and it got as far as the login screen. After about two minutes of being on the login screen (I didn't actually enter my details or touch anything at this stage) it just turned itself off randomly. Therefore, I don't think what I'm trying to do in Avidemux is totally to blame for the problem in this respect.
After the Mac turned itself off this time, it wouldn't let me turn it back on for about 30 seconds of pressing the power button. When it finally started up again, it seemed to run fine for the rest of the evening.
Does this sound like the power supply is on its way out or could it be something else? If I need a new power supply, will I need a specific type of power supply and not just a standard PC one?
    Any further help appreciated.

  • How does Mac Pro compare to iMac?

    Ok I'm Pisssed!
I just bought a mac pro with AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB to photo editing. I noticed that it's a bit sluggish with my 4k Dell monitor. I figured what I can do I already have the best mac there is guess I'll have to live with it.
And then BAM, the new iMac comes out with AMD Radeon R9 M295X. Will it perform better with photo editing?

    Actually you are wrong.
You can change CPU in mac pro, but you cannot fit inside anything better or newer as you are limited to specific TDP and chipset. For instance, putting in new generation of xeon won't give you TB3 support and so on. It can also lead to instability of the system overall. So in basic words: you shouldn't change CPU you already have inside so no CPU upgrade there as well.
Also iMac is much better in single core performance than mac pro and 99% of applications don't use more than 2 cores and even if they do those actions are not so critical (rendering where you can wait or go get one coffee meantime,...) compared to for instance 3D modelling or animation, where you need smooth rendering and good CPU real-time computation.
Also new radeon R9 M290X and M295X is much better supported from AMD side and also in windows. We all know OS X 3D performance is miserable compared to windows and having one year old drivers for mac pro GPU's (13.25 version) compared to newest radeon drivers (14.9).
In addition to all, 4K monitors are very poorly supported on mac pro. For example sometimes when I start OS X half of the screen remains black on my dell UP2414Q and only solution is to restart my computer again. Dell says that they haven't tested with apple hardware and it should be apple to fix this while apple says dell should fix it while customers remain in the dark and with poor support. Thank you dell and apple.
And there is more bad news for apple: adobe has started to shift their support to nvidia and windows system as Illustrator CC2014.2 now supports hardware accelerated graphics rendering with nvidia GPU on windows! And even more, new GTX980 beats any AMD cards on the market and AMD probably won't make anything better because they can't. I never understood apple latest fascination with AMD. AMD is the worst company for GPU's and their support is so bad I'm considering selling my mac pro.
The release of new iMac with 5K was a big slap in the face of professional apple customers who paid big money for their pro machine which can only run final cut pro X in it's full power. Any other software is unable to utilize all that "power" that apple put into mac pro. It's a big shame and a good waste of money to have just a nice room warmer.
Instead of fixing old things apple went and made new version of consumer class PC that is better or at least equivalent to pro class PC's the sell.
What apple need to fix is:
-10-bit support for displays. I don't know why we throw so much money on good displays when computer only outputs 8bit at the end.
-drop AMD and pick up nvidia cards. Apple already supports openCL 1.2 with nvidia cards under OS X and nvidia offers physX and CUDA in addition to only openCL that AMD offers. Also nvidia drivers are much more stable and performance of nvidia cards is better in all aspects.
-give more support to developers like adobe and others to upgrade their software to take advantage of GPU's we throw so much money on. What good is it to have a good computer and then software that can't even use that computer in it full potential except only few operations while majority of operations are still slow and laggy.
-give better support for 3D under OS X. Right now I'm watching like 9-30 FPS in Maya and Unity, and sometimes I even run some games to free my mind. WoW hardly reaches 60FPS on low settings while under windows bootcamp on same hardware I can get easily 60FPS! OS X still only has openGL 4.1, while we have there 4.3 and 4.4 GPU's out.
There has been almost one year since the release of this mac pro and nothing pretty much changed. This "pro" computer is actually pretty slow compared to what competition offers and the only good thing on mac is now the friendliness of OS X, stability and good integration with everything which windows lacks. But overall it's a very slow system to work on. Apple promised much but we got nothing of it except high price tag and a lot of lost nerves!
I'm very very disappointed in apple right now and really considering switching back to normal PC where at least I get latest drivers for everything and things at least runs at normal frame rate I can work with.
And don't even let me start on new Yosemite "flat" look which they obviously copied from windows and it is ugly as ****. Instead of changing icons they should fix old mac problems and give us professionals more to work with. In reality we get slapped and pushed on the edge. Don't try and make professional multimedia computer if you can't support it!

  • How does a 1.1 mac pro compare to a new 2.2 ghz macbook pro - for after effects/ 3d type work?

    Hi
For my home computer that I also use for some motion graphics tasks outside of work - I have a 1.1 mac pro thats getting a little long in the tooth.
My 2 preferred options at the moment are upgrade the processors to some X5355s or sell this and stump up the extra cash (lots) for a 2.2 macbook pro.
I was wondering if anyone had experience/opinions on the speed comparison between these 2 when it comes to after effects and cinema 4d rendering tasks.
Geekbench shows that I will get slightly better numbers with the macbook but does this translate directly to render speed or are there other considerations such as advantages gained with the larger mac pro architecture?
    Any thoughts welcome
    Thanks!

  • How can I load Numbers 2.3 or iWork from my mac pro to my new Mini??

Hi guys.  I want to load numbers 2.3 onto my new mac mini running Mavericks. I want 2.3 and 3.0 to run side by side as I have seen others do here.
My Mini has only ever had 3.0.  I copy and pasted iWorks over, however it did not work though comes up with compatibility error.
the app store did allow me to update from this method though.
My mac pro is running 10.6.4 with iWorks 09 running beautifully.
I was told about trying Migration Assistant, did not work either, My ex HDD has TM for both on there and when I open MA it only recognizes and asks about
importing from the mini backup only. It is not reading the mac pro backup.
Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.
I have attempted downloads from net with no avail, I am giving my cc numbers to pple when they say 'I will not charge you'....
one download was an issue because osx no longer supports ppc power pc games - claytons hard drives on computer.
    Thanks and enjoy.
I see my other question on moving tables between sheets is stumping ppl, a few views no responses,  Is it POSSIBLE???
Jason.  Dream Big and achieve everyone.

Not sure it will work - it might have to do with the licensing requirements; any app downloaded through the app store can be run on as many Macs as you own and control. However, yours is still the old version of  iWork which has an older, separate agreement. Applicable excerpt here:

  • How To Install Logic Pro from my Mac Pro to a new iMac?

I read about this once but have forgotten.
I currently have Logic Pro on my Mac Pro.Using the latest version.
Just bought an iMac which will be here soon.
I have the original Logic discs and the box says "Upgrade from Logic Studio or Logic Pro" on the front.
As I remember, I will have to install all these DVDs on the new iMac, then somehow update the application to the current version online. Is this correct?
Where does one go to do the update? App store? So confusing.
It's like...they wanted you to register your copy of Logic when you bought it...so if you did, why don't they know you already own it and allow you to just download it to your new computer?
    Thanks for any help
    Tom

Apple is nowhere near as small a company and unfortunately, when a company grows, these kind of requests start to come in so often that the management finds ways to obscure, redirect, or flat out refuse to provide service and help out.
There is also the big factor that Apple may not even know the key themselves. Even if they know you bought a copy, Logic doesnt talk to the internet to verify AFAIK so there would be very little reason for them to be able to link your key to your receipt to tell you what your serial was, and I imagine they are understandably touchy about giving out new ones.
Does your old registration login still work? I was under the impression that it would all be eaten up by the App Store.

  • Correction : How does Macbook (not PRO) compare to G4/800 Quicksilver

I currently have a G4/800 Quicksilver Powermac with 1Gb of memory, two 7200rpm hard drives, and a ATI RAdeon 7500 GPU with 32Mb of RAM.
I mainly use my computer for amateur photograph editing (Photoshop elements) and video-editing (imovie and Final cut express), and I play the occasional game (older games like wolfenstein, medal of honor, warcraft 3). I've read a lot on this forum about how crappy the GMA in the macbook is, but to give me an idea, how does it compare to my equally crappy ATI radeon 7500 ? Would the macbook be ok to play games like C&C generals, Homeworld 2 and other 3D strategy games ? I like the occasional 3D shooter but I don't need the graphical splendour of Quake 4. And I've read that Final Cut pro has some issues with the macbook but I suppose Final cut express would be ok ?
How would the 2Gh Macbook compare to my G4 Quicksilver speedwise overall (I would max out the ram in the macbook) ?

    Well lets compare the two.
    Old mac New mac
g4/800 mhz 2ghz intel core duo
    1gb ram 1gb (minimum)
    7500 gpu 32mb Intel GMA 950 64MB
Not only does the processor in the macbook easily outperform the g4/800, but the new gpu offers double the mb and I belive the processor within it is better aswell.
If you was to max out the ram, to say 2gb this will improve gameplay/editing extremely. The limiting factor here will be the graphics, but Im sure it will do the job.

  • Mac Pro 2009 or Mac Pro 2010?

    Hi all!
My iMac (late 2006) died (logic board, a known problem with that model, except to Apple...) and I now have to buy new. I can't buy an iMac (my preferred choice) because of the glossy screen. I don't want a laptop and a MacMini is too limited I think (although I wish the new ones would come out, I'm very curious as to what their specs will be). Anyway, after going back and forth, I have decided to buy a Mac Pro. Problem now is which one?
The new (2010) Mac Pro costs 2.399 euro, but there is an Apple Dealer here (a Premium Reseller) offering a new 2009 low-end Mac Pro (the 2.66GHz) for 2.099 euro, and I am very much tempted to buy the latter one, particularly in view of the fact that, according to MacRumors, the Mac Pro is due to be updated any moment now.
So my question is if the 2010 Mac Pro is worth paying 300 euro more for right now. Apart from using the Mac for all the everyday things, I will use it for editing photographs (I am a passionate bird photographer), which I do on an almost daily basis. Applications used for that are: Photoshop (CS5) and Lightroom. I also rip my (retail) dvd's, convert them to mkv's and I do a bit of animation.
I think the 2009 Mac Pro would do nicely, but the one thing I am a bit worried about is that Video Card, the Nvidia GeForce GT 120. Will this card suffice for what I do?
I would most welcome any advice, thoughts, thinking with, etc. Thanks in advance.

Swap out the processor for one, can do for either.
    Comes with ATI 5770
There have been 2009s for $1800 if you look.
A number of small improvements afterall under the hood (got to have done something to make the 2010 better).

In your shoes, given today's hardware and software, I wouldn't be married to Mac OS. Once you have your case and PSU and drives, you can gradually upgrade and update a PC  with Windows 7 to the newest motherboards, processors, throw in whatever graphic card you want, and have more buying power and choices.
Even with my SE/30, I upgraded the hard drive, threw in a PDS slot video card (2MB to drive a 15" Pivot) and went from 2MB/40MB to 20MB/320MB HDD as well, but skipped on the Motorolla 63040 cpu upgrade (socked cpu). And that was before the Classic/Classic II  which locked out and less flexible.
