How low can you go? Or in fact how low should you gp to favour Windows?

I too have had a series of complaints by now from my Windows using corporate clients that my DSP4 DVD-R/+R disc do not play on their PC's (of course they run perfectly on any stand-alone DVD-player).
After some testing with different bit-rates it has become clear to me, that the default bitrates that DSP4 works with, are simply set at too high a level for Windows Media Player.
Yes, laugh about it, consider yourself very, very lucky to work on the Macintosh platform. But for me it's my bread and butter. DVD's I produce must run on PC's.
Now what I would simply like to know: what is the best (maximum) bit rate for MPEG2/DVD video that I can use for DVD's to play correctly on a Windows PC?
And/or does anyone know of any links to the (related) answers to my question?
G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCP Studio

You're not the only one to make sandwiches out of this stuff! Unfortunately I doubt that there is a definitive answer to the problem. All I can say is that DVD-R is not a replicated disc and certain considerations about bitrate will help with compatibility.
If the client can play a replicated disc (i.e. from blockbuster) then the bitrate capabilities of WMP is not the issue -replicated discs are frequently encoded at 9MBPS. It is far more likely to be down to the differences in the two types of media. A DVD-R is less reflective than a replicated disc and this has an impact on how well the player can pick up the information from it. Additionally, faster burns on DVD-R have been repeatedly shown to be more susceptible to playback errors. Finally, the choice of media itself is a factor - some just work better than others.
What you cannot control is the range of different hard/software that the client will be using, and so all you can do is work to minimise the risks.
Encode at no more than 7.4MBPS for video when working with DVD-R. Use AC3 audio.
User good quality media - opinions differ as to which is actually the best or most compatible.
Burn slowly - if you can, use Toast (which gives you more control over the burn speed than DVDSP does).

  • How can you use symbols in Windows 7 on a IMac 27

How can you use symbols @$€%£¥ in Windows 7 on a IMac 27 mid 2011?  I tried what was normally done on Windows and got nothing.  Alt plus numbers and nothing happens, what am I missing?

    Frosted Flake,
Are you referring to an equivalent to the Windows Character Map Application (charmap.exe) that allowed you to see the various characters available in each font, and then give you an ALT-nnn number you could key to use the character you wanted ?
If so you can use the Special Characters from the Edit menu of most applications. Once you have located the character/symbol you want double click it and it will be entered wherever you cursor is located in your application.

  • Can you run labview on Windows Tablet PC Edition?

Can you run labview on Windows Tablet PC Edition?...or does LabVIEW executable and Run-time engine operate with this OS?

LabVIEW 7.x will run without any problems on a Windows Tablet PC with SP1. There have been documented issues with Windows XP SP2 and LabVIEW subsequently not exiting properly--LabVIEW's window closes but somehow it is still present in the task manager.

  • TS1389 How can you do this in windows 8?

The suggested fix for unknown error occured (-42110) is only described for Vista/Wndows 7. Can someone please explain how to find the SC folder in Windows 8 please ?

It's in the same place in the folder hierarchy on Windows 8 as in Windows 7/Vista, but to show the hidden files and get there is a little different.
I don't have Windows 8, but asked someone who had it to check for us. Credit to Skydiver119 for the following instructions:
To access what serves as start, you hover in the lower left corner, which brings up the small pop up to access the start page. Then click on Computer, then go to the control panel, then to the folder options.
Make those changes, then, to get to the folder to delete the SC data, you click on the file explorer icon and click your way through the folder hierarchy.

  • How can you open a new window in the new iTunes 11 ???

In the old version, you can open a list in a new window. But I don't find this option in the iTunes 11 -.-  Can somebody help me ???

Also, ⌘T for a new Tab (also File->New Window, File->New Tab)
This is what I always use. You can also click on the plus sign at the far right, that will also give you a new tab/window. And if you want that tab to be a separate window, then once you've created it, just go up to that tab (avoid the little x that will appear--that deletes it), click on the tab, hold and drag it down. It'll leave the other tabs behind and become a window all on its own.

  • For upgrade fastload, can you have CI in Windows and AS in zLINUX

    Hello,
Based on the DB2 Cookbook, the fastload feature during upgrade is not available in Windows server and only in zLINUX.
    Questions please
    - can you have the CI in Windows and the apps server in zLINUX in the source and target systems?
    - if possible, how can you 'force' the 'export' and 'import' process to run only in the zLINUX apps server?
    Thanks,
    Terry

    Hi Terry,
    let me answer your questions:
can we have the CI in windows and the apps server in zLINUX to be able to use the fastload feature?
We see no reason why the R3load based export and import for Unicode Conversion cannot be done on a DI. The R3load based steps belonging to the Upgrade will be done on your CI and without Fast Load.
Since we'll be using parallel export/impirt, can we have that set-up in both the source and target system?
Using parallel Export and Import should be fine.
And how can we put the export and import process to use the zLINUX servers in the export and import?
You just start the R3load processes on the Linux DI system instead of the CI.
If you plan to implement zLinux for the reason of the Unicode Migration only (and not for server consolidation for example), you might think of Linux on xSeries as well. You can reuse the same hardware as for Windows appservers and the Export/Import Tasks will not share CPU resources with the Database system.

  • Can you enable AHCI in Windows 7 on a MacBook Air 11"?

i know people have enabled AHCI in MB Pro's. there's a bunch of information regarding that laptop. i've tried to follow those directions but AHCI just won't turn on. i'm wondering if the PCI IDE Controller just doesn't support AHCI or if i'm doing something wrong.
does anyone have any information regarding this matter?
    thanks in advance.

Apple uses a proprietary extensions for perfectly standart, even a bit outdated base EFI. Big difference with proprietary efi. Just for you to know - you can grab (opensorced, standart) UEFI, compile it yourself in MS Visual Studio under windows and Apple's extensions will perfectly load into it at runtime.
    I'd recommend you read this:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463525
    exactly pay attention to this:
    * The GUID Partition Table (GPT) was introduced as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) initiative.
    and than - this:
Windows XP x64 Edition can use GPT disks for data only.
The 32-bit version will see only the Protective MBR. The EE partition will not be mounted or otherwise exposed to application software.
Starting with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, all versions of Windows Server can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on Itanium-based systems.
Can Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
Yes, all versions can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems.
Last one sounds good, yes? Actually no:
    Windows GPT Required Partitions
    EFI System Partition
What is the Extensible Firmware Interface System Partition (ESP)?
The ESP contains the NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and other files… blabla
Do you really think that NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt are parts of OS-independent UEFI standart?
Can there be two ESPs on a single disk?
Such a configuration should not be created and is not supported in Windows.
So Apple just can not create special win-specific partition for Windows to load directly - it just does not support it
    Microsoft Reserved Partition
    What disks require an MSR?
Every GPT disk must contain an MSR. The order of partitions on the disk should be ESP (if any), OEM (if any) and MSR followed by primary data partition(s). It is particularly important that the MSR be created before other primary data partitions.
Do you really think that Microsoft Reserved Partition is a part of OS-independent GUID GPT standart?
    Q.          Who creates the MSR?
The MSR must be created when disk-partitioning information is first written to the drive. If the manufacturer partitions the disk, the manufacturer must create the MSR at the same time.
So for windows to boot directly, Apple should themselves create windows non-standard partition on every mac sold.
And, furthermore, it (Apple) have to install NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt and other MS crap on every mac. Paying license fee for that.
It's not my fantasies - it's open data from Windows Hardware Developer Center > Learn > Devices > Storage Technologies > Windows and GPT FAQ of MS itself.
And same story you can find about UEFI support on Windows. Non-standard things required here and there.
Do you know that Linux can boot on macs directly, as it doesn't require some MSR sh*t and such?
There are a lot of things to blame Apple, but not this one

  • Can you sync music from windows windows media

I synced music from windows media player onto my ipod nano. Windows media says it's all downloded but none of the songs show up on my ipod. Why is that? Can you not sync music from windows media player even though windows media player lets you?

    Hi,
You probably have your nano's disk-use enabled. This enables you to use your iPod as an external disk. Windows Media Player does sync music, but it only transfer it to the iPod as normal data file you put into it, which iPod Nano will not show the songs in the player, but if you access the iPod from My Computer, you might able to see the files.
Meanwhile, iPod only read and understands files that synced into it by using iTunes. The songs are renamed and put into the iPod filesystem hiddenly. If the above information contains errors, please correct me.

    Siau.

How long should I keep it (... without "impacting the performance or the battery life")?

Closing it when it first appeared wouldn't have stopped the 'optimization' so you could have closed it any time and can do so now - in any case optimization will have long since completed.

  • Can you change flash player window size for a published Captivate course?

I am working on publishing a course with a FMR and, during testing, a lot of scrolling was required so I wanted to resize the window.  Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it? Similar to Flash where you can publish to dimension %???

you can adjust the movie size in the html, with varying levels of success based on how much you scale.
edit the swf associated .htm file with a text editor and look for this line:  var so = new SWFObject("project_name.swf", "Captivate", "641", "516", "10", "#CCCCCC");  In this case the 641 and 516 are the pixel dimensions.  you can also change it to a %
I've never done it with FMR so I won't attest to how well it'll work.

  • Can you make Sysprep on Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 Prompt for a Computer Name

    Hi guys,
Our Windows 7 Unattend.xml has always made Sysprep prompt for Computer Name. I'm struggling to achieve that with Windows 8.1 and Svr 2012 R2.
    Firstly: Is it still possible?
    Secondly: If so, How?
    Thanks

OOBE will only hide pages that contain the answers in the XML. So if you want OOBE to prompt for a computer name, make sure your XML does not contain the ComputerName object.
