How many Airport devices do I need to extend an existing network?

Hello all,
I hope one of you might be able to help me with a problem.
I recently just moved to a different apartment, and my router (from my local internet provider) does not reach to all the rooms in the apartment.
Since I also wanted to stream wireless music in my home office I read that the Airport express would be a great solution to both extend the existing network and stream wireless from my Apple products.
I went to buy the Airport express, and asked the guy in the local authorized reseller of Apple products, if I could use this without connecting it via cables to my router (hence using it via wifi only). And he said yes, which I believed. However, after trying to set it up, and failed. I started searching for questions about my issue.
So:
Do I need two airport devices if I want to extend my existing network, when the router is in the living room, and the speakers that I want to stream from are located in my home office in the other end of the apartment? The area that I want to extend the existing network to is the bed room, next to the office.
So I thought that I could set the Airport express up in my office and connect it to the mini-jack from the speakers, and voila it would just do as I wanted to. But since I'm not a technical expert, I might have misunderstood, and I really do not want long ethernet cables running all over the place.
Is the only solution then to buy two devices? (Oh and for your information, I am not able to move the router to the office since there is no outlet for the internet, the only place it can be set up is in the living room).
Hope someone can help enlighten me on this issue. Thank you :-)

You need two AirPorts if you want to wirelessly "extend" the network, which will provide more wireless coverage....since both AirPorts will be broadcasting a wireless network.
You only need one AirPort Express if all that you want to do is use it for AirPlay to pick up the wireless signal and "join" your existing wireless network. In order to do this, the Express must be able to receive a good wireless signal from your router.
To test if you have a good signal, take a laptop or mobile device to the area where you want to install the AirPort Express and check to make sure that you can get a good wireless connection at that location. If you can, then the AirPort Express should work well at the same point.

  • How many Airport Express do I need?

I have my network setup in the basement. I would like to use AirTunes to listen music upstairs in the 3 bedrooms. Do I need 3 Airport Express?
Are there any Speakers that natively support AirTunes? Any other options?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
There will need to be an amplifier and speakers or powered speaker arrangement connected directly to each AirPort Express, so the number of Express devices will depend on how many separate amp/speaker configurations you want to set up.
If you want speakers in each room, you will need 3 Expresses.
I'm not aware of a speaker system that is designed specifically for AirTunes. Virtually all small powered speaker systems use the same type of audio plugs and connections, so compatibility should not be an issue.
To insure that the Expresses will function well, I would also suggest that you take a laptop upstairs and try to connect to the internet to make sure that you have adequate signal strength in the areas where the Expresses will be located.
If you have an Apple(n) base station in the basement, you will also be able to configure the Expresses to "extend" the wireless network, which will give you much better wireless signal strength upstairs.

  • How many airport expresses would I need for a 3000 square foot apartment with minimal walls?

The apartment is open-air style with minimal walls. I have two airport expresses currently and am wondering if this will be enough to cover the entire apartment? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

You'll get about 50ft @ (-6db), you'll get about 100ft @ (-12db), both of these are useable figures, beyond a 100ft it will be patchy
This assumes your AE is in free space, which it won't be as you need to plug into something, the more intersections (wall/ceilng wall/floor) the greater the chance of multipath rejection.
3000sq ft relatively empty of dividers is a good space, but I would use 2

  • How many wireless devices can be connected at once to an airport extreme?

How many wireless devices can be connected to an airport extreem at one time? I have 4 iphones and 2 ipads, a goolge chrome and 4 wired devices.

Any AirPort Extreme produced since 2008 will support up to 50 wireless devices and 150+ wired devices simultaneously, so this should accommodate most users in most homes.

  • How many Airport Extremes can I use to create a network?

    Hi all.
I've taken to using two of the dual-band Airport Extremes whenever I need to create a wireless network over a larger than usual space, obviously using one as base and using the other to extend the network.
Can I add a third or fourth Apple Airport Extreme to further extend the network?
    Thanks

Can I add a third or fourth Apple Airport Extreme to further extend the network?
If you are asking about wireless only extension, it is important to remember that the "extend a wireless network" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheet. Your "main" AirPort Extreme is the hub and the remotes reside at the end of the spokes.
You can have multiple remotes if you wish, but keep in mind that each remote communicates directly to the hub....not to another remote at the end of another spoke.
For this reason, you want to lcoate the "main" AirPort Exteme as centrally as possible within you home so the extending devices will operate correctly.
If you are asking about extending by connecting the "remote" devices to the "main" AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable, you can have as many remotes as you wish....up to about 250.

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • How many airport express can be supported by software remote at one time.

how many airport express can be supported by software remote at one time?
I mean remote software can control at one time

Well Apple makes an iOS application called 'Remote' it's used to control iTunes on a Mac, Or to control an Apple TV Multimedia features.
Apple also makes "AirPort Utility" for iOS. Airport Utility can be used to configure Aiport Extrem, Airport Express And Time Capsul using an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. You can use it to connect to one device at a time. While connected to the device you can configure it to work as part of a larger Airport network. If you want to configure muliple device, you would connect to one device,  configure it,  And then connect to the next device, and configure it, and so on and so fourth.
    I haven't found a limit.
How big of a network are you trying to make?

  • How many Airport Express...

How many Airport Express units can be used simultaneously?  I have an audio application that is wireless and could potentially have 12-20 separate areas. The most I have actually ever tried is 4 and it worked fine.  Any limitations that anyone has read about, or has anyone tried this?

Well, a standard "main" router that will supply DHCP and NAT services for the entire network will be able to allow up to a total of about 250 devices to connect. That would include the AirPorts, and any devices that are connected to the AirPorts and any other devices that you have on the network.
Each AirPort Express (new version) will handle up to 50 wireless clients. It would be much better to limit that to 20-25 to keep the speed up.  So, you'll have to do some math to try to figure out how many total devices will connect to the network when everything is working.
You could connect 20 AirPort Express devices to the main router....but you would only be able to connect about 10-15 devices to each Express.
Or, connect 10 Express devices to the main router and you can connect about 20-25 devices to each Express.
If you plan to connect to the Internet, keep in mind that all devices will share the bandwidth. If you have a 100 Mbps Internet connection, and 100 clients connected to the network, then each client will get about 1 Mbps. Pretty slow.
I'm not sure what your audio application is here....the network examples I am providing assume that you will be connecting wireless and wired Ethernet clients to the network.
If you could detail your proposed system, other users could offer their comments. We're still pretty much guessing at hypotheticals at this point.

  • How many wireless devices can connect to an Express which is wired and extending an Extreme network?

How many wireless devices can connect to an Express which is wired and extending an Extreme network?

That is great news I have A1392s. One more question...
If I have an Airport Extreme setup as a router and feeding internet from a modem/ I wire an express (A1392) and "create a wireless network" the airport utility puts the express into bridge mode automatically.
How many wireless clients can I connect simultaneously to the express?
How many wireless clients can I connect simultaneously to the extreme assuming I am using all 50 at the express?
In other words, Could I have 50 wireless clients connected to each device simultaneously giving me a total of 100 wireless clients?

  • How many Airport Expresses possible?

Been looking far and wide for this answer.... how many Airport Expresses can iTunes stream to at once? I know with iTunes v6 and the firmware update it's possible to stream to more than one... but what's the maximum? Is there a max?
I know only one stream is possible I'd just like to figure out how many I could get. Thanks in advance.

Quoting from Apple's Airport Express FAQ:
Question: Can iTunes send a single AirTunes stream to multiple AirPort Express stations?
Answer: Yes. With iTunes 6.0.2 or later, you can send an AirTunes stream to multiple remote AirPort Express units, provided that each AirPort Express has the latest AirPort firmware (available here). The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is three to six in typical conditions. The number that works for you will depend on your environmental conditions (such as building composition and local radio interference), distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage.
The practical limit on the number of Airport Express devices you can stream to at one time (as indicated in that paragraph) is determined by the available bandwidth of the wireless network.
The next question, of course, is how many could be supported if all Airport Expresses were cabled to an ethernet network.

Theoretically as much as you want but there are technical limitations about the usable bandwidth in the wireless or by the used access point.
All participants (stations) in a wireless network share the available bandwhith equally and therefore a point will get reached where the throughput in the network became insufficient to stream music.
Also some routers limit the number of stations could get connected. For instance Apples Airport Extreme have a limit of 50 connected clients and the AP-Express (if used as access point) a limit of 10 simultaneous connections.

  • I'm going to buy a new iPhone, how many GB's do I need?

Rather than get a new iPod, I plan to use my new iPhone 4s for my music.  I'll probably have about 800 songs, will use many apps, cruising the internet, watching video, and storing some pictures, bbut probably only around 100 or so.  How many GB's will I need?  8? 16? 32?

What is the storage capacity of your iPod and what is installed on it besides music?
A movie purchased from the iTunes store will take up 1+ GB of storage - the longer the movie, more storage space required. The new 4S is available with 16, 32, and 64.
In regards to storage capacity, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Whatever storage capacity you choose, you won't be able to increase it. You probably won't go wrong with 32GB.
