How many cores do I need?

I don't know what kind of Mac Pro I should buy. My existing computer is a dual 2.0 G5. My reason for upgrading to a Mac Pro is mostly for speed and to have an Intel processor (not having an Intel processor has become increasingly limiting in the past years).
My main applications for the system will be:
50% Final Cut Pro work (1080p editing) and music composition (Logic & Finale)
30% general computing & email
15% photoshop & DVD SP work
5% After Effects, Motion and other graphics applications.
I also want to use the system to stream movies from Netflix, AppleTV and other sites.
I thought about shooting for the moon and getting the 12-core, until I read that it isn't super fast unless it utilizes software meant for lots of cores. Last I heard, Final Cut Pro doesn't take advantage of the multiple cores. So is it wiser to go for a dual quad core? 8 core?
Thanks for your input!

Some have made the mistake of getting those el cheapo 2 x 2.26 from 2009, or 2 x 2.4GHz - and lived to regret the decision realizing that a faster processor sometimes trumps slower, and 12-core systems aren't always able to fully realize even with video editing (the second processor adds 70% and Apple highest 12-core is only 2.93GHz).
How Many CPU Cores?

An 8-core at 3.46 GHz is a near optimal solution: fastest clock speed and 8 cores serves just about any need. A 12-core 3.46 GHz is a great option also, but will cost even more (available soon), and will be useful mainly for specialized software.
Your most cost effective upgrade for a 2010 Mac Pro is to buy the slowest model (2.8GHz 4-core or 2.4GHz 8-core), then upgrade it.

And weight the cost vs the ever reducing benefit that drops off.

So if you are going to bake a dozen cakes, go for it, otherwise, the 6-core 3.33 is still the sweet spot for most tasks and everything will benefit from higher clock.

  • How to change how many cores to use in after effects cs4

so i raced my laptop vs my desktop
desktop:intel core 2 quad 2.33 ghz  4 gigs of ram
laptop: intel core 2 duo 1.83 ghz 4 gigs of ram
and my desktop beat it by a little bit
    kinda sad
    then i went to
    edit>preferences>memory&multiprocessing
then i clicked on render multiple frames siultanesously [clicked on the check box]
    and then relized that
    my laptop said
actual cpu's that will be used: 2
    my desktop says
actual cpu's that will be used: 1
that is why my desktop was running so slow1
can someone help me change that?

    Hoonathan:
Even though in After Effects CS4 there's a new preference item to set how many cores to use (or how many to leave idle for other purposes), you have to bear in mind that this feature works by launching a number of background processes (ie, headless versions of the full application) according to the number of cores in your machine. Because of this, the more cores you have, the more RAM you need for the feature to work at all (or it will simply refuse to launch the background processes because of insufficient RAM). For a quad-core machine, 8 GB of RAM would be the minimum recommended amount (you could probably get all 4 processes to launch with 6 GB, but I don't think that would be a good idea). You should be able to have at least 2 cores used in your desktop system, though. Go to Preferences > Memory and Multiprocessing. Of course, enable "Render Multiple Frames Simulataneously" and make sure "CPUs to leave for other applications" is set to 0 (zero).  Also, check that the minimum allocation (ie, minimum RAM amount per core for the processes to launch) is 0.5 GB.
If the number of cores is still 1, try moving the Longer RAM preview/Faster rendering slider and see if at some point, it enables the second core.
In the long run, upgrading your desktop system to 8 GB of RAM (or more, if the motherboard allows it) would be the best move.
Of course, for an in-depth description of all settings involved, take a look at the Memory & Multiprocessing preferences section in After Effects Help.

  • How i can determinate how many cores would be necessary for my virtual servers

    Hello friends
i have a question.  Exists a mechanism for determinate how many cores my virtual machine needs in an optimal way.  A formula? a counter? a microsoft sheet?
I have my virtual machines on HYPER - V 2012 CORE MODE.
    Greetings
    Aleds

That depends on the workload you intend to run on any given VM.
For example, if you're planning a SQL 2014 VM, consult the
SQL 2014 hardware requirements guidelines. It suggests a maximum of 4-64 cores depending on the guest OS version.
Another example, is when planning an Exchange 2013 VM. Again
check the application hardware requirements and configure your VM accordingly.
The application hardware requirements may also steer you towards using hyper-threading or not.
Finally, bear in mind that application hardware requirements guidelines are simply initial planning tools. Actual CPU requirements will vary significantly from environment to environment depending on many factors such as data size, and other networking and
storage details that affect CPU utilization. For example, using RDMA capable NICs can greatly reduce your CPU load, whether they're used for networking or storage/iSCSI. You should plan on monitoring CPU load on each VM and adjust CPU allocation as needed.

You could try calling Apple and ask for Customer Relations.

    How to Complain
You call customer service to complain about a product, and you hang up angrier than when you started. That’s customer rage, a feeling experienced by millions of people with a major complaint, says Scott Broetzmann, president an American firm that tells companies how to offer the best customer service. His secrets to getting good service:
    Have a goal
If you want your product repaired, say so. Want an apology? Speak up.
    Keep it short
Focus on one problem, and be succinct.
    Stick with it
You have to invest the time it takes. Don’t get what you want? Ask for a supervisor.
    Skip ultimatums
Don’t threaten not to do business with them again. Why should they help you if you won’t buy from them in the future?
    Plead your case
Many companies have information such as how much money you’ve spent with them and how often you complain. If you’re a good customer, they may be more willing to help.
    Be nice
You’re unlikely to get what you want if you’re rude.

  • ISCSI MPIO, how many path do I need to create

    Hi,
I've a server with 4 NIC connection to a DELL MD32xx which have 8 NIC.
My question is how many path do I need to create under iSCSI connection.
Do I need to create a path from each Server NIC to each MD32xx NIC, which will make 32 connection (and doesn't make sense).
If not, how should I proceed, I've looked at many example and none seem to cover that kind of situation, they just directly connect the server NIC to the MD32xx NIC instead of going through switch for redundancy.
    Thank

It's MD3260 so can be used for 32xx storage unit with iSCSI uplinks.
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

How many GB do I need to download video

It depends on the size of the movie, the capacity of your iPad and how much space you have left, so you need enough to hold whatever the size of the video is and still leave about 10% of your total storage space available.
Most Movies are at least 2GB. I have seen some that are over 6GB.

Then update using iTunes on your computer. You'll be fine & you don't have to delete anything. You only need that much free space if you update OTA. Once the update is done, you get the space back. So, use your computer.

  • How many servers are generally needed to a medium size HFM project

    Hi,
I am new to HFM.Can any one help me that How many servers are generally needed to a medium size HFM project? And details that servers are for what segments?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can use one serwer only for everything (provided that you use classic application).
Number of servers depends on the number of planned applications, the number of users, number of entities, number of accounts, the amount of calculation...

  • How many cores can FCP take advantage of?

I'm currently on a Core 2 Duo processor and FCP seems to range in about the 150-170% (according to my activity monitor) when timeline rendering. Can it do more/go faster with a processor with more cores? Or, is there a limit to how many cores the software can actually use?
Same question for Compressor... which, I believe I've read somewhere, can take advantage of at least 8 cores.

Thanks, Red... I really appreciate your response.
yeah, I think I'm clear on core vs. processor (I have one processor with two cores). I'm using a cluster to rope both of my cores into maxing out for Compressor.
Both of my cores appear to be working during a FCP timeline render (going to about 150-175% combined). I guess my original question was, is that about as good as FCP gets, regardless of the amount of cores and/or processors? The thought that prompted me to ask this question is, if FCP is capable of utilizing more cores, why isn't it currently pegging at closer to 190%, like my 2-core cluster does when I'm using Compressor?
Since I'm hearing that FCP isn't mult-processor capable, if I had a quad core, single processor would my timeline renders be going faster? Or, again, is FCP maxing out its capabilities with just my two cores?
    Thanks all.

  • How many channels should i need for my 10 pieces of thermocouple?

1.i need test 10 pieces of thermocouples at one time,so how many channels do i need? are 8 channels enough(SCXI-1112) of i must use 32 channel(SCXI-1102)?
2.I only need test 3 LVDT signals and 3 strain guage signal(must full bridge),do you have 4 channels' LVDT module and 4 channels' Strain/bridge module(full bridge)?
3.if i hug all these sensors to the signal conditioning, does that mean my DAQ should have at least 16 Analog inputs, beside do you have 12-bit DAQ?

    dittoit,
    1. If you need to measure 10 thermocouples, then you will need at least that many differential channels. So the 1102 would be best.
    2. The current LVDT module we offer is the 1540 which has 8 Channels as does the 1520 which is the best strain gauge module.
    3. The measurements from the SCXI Chassis will normally be multiplexed to one channel on the DAQ card. Any of our E-Series (except the Basic DAQ) will control. Our E-Series card can be either 12-bit or 16-bit.
