How many disk groups for +DATA?

Hi All,
Does oracle recommends having one big/shared asm disk group for all of the databases?
In our case we going to have 11.2 and 10g rac running against 11.2 ask...
Am I correct in saying that I have to set asm’s compatibility parameter to 10 in order to be able to use the same disk?
Is this is a good idea? Or should i create another disk group for the 10g db’s?
I’m assuming there are feature that will not be available when the compatibility is reduced to 10g...

if you have a storage with serveral disks then you create mostly more than one lun (raid 0, 1, 5 or whatever). if the requirement is, that you need a 1 TB diskgroup, then I would not create 1 1TB lun, I would create 5x200GB lun's for example, just for the case that you have to extend the diskgroup with a same lun size. if its 1 TB then you have to add another 1TB lun, if there are 5x200GB luns then you can simply add 200GB.
I have nowhere found a document that says: if you have exactly 16 lun's for a diskgroup it's best. it depends on os, storage, etc...
so if you create a 50gb diskgroup I would create just one 50gb lun for example.
hthyes its NAS, connectd using Iscsi. it has 5 disks 1TB each and configued with RAID5. I found below requirments on asm ... it indicates 4luns as minimum per diskgroup, but it doesnt clearify whether its for external redundancy or as mredundancy types.
•A minimum of four LUNs (Oracle ASM disks) of equal size and performance is recommended for each disk group.
•Ensure that all Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have similar storage performance and availability characteristics. In storage configurations with mixed speed drives, such as 10K and 15K RPM, I/O performance is constrained by the slowest speed drive.
•Oracle ASM data distribution policy is capacity-based. Ensure that Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have the same capacity to maintain balance.
•Maximize the number of disks in a disk group for maximum data distribution and higher I/O bandwidth.
•Create LUNs using the outside half of disk drives for higher performance. If possible, use small disks with the highest RPM.
•Create large LUNs to reduce LUN management overhead.
•Minimize I/O contention between ASM disks and other applications by dedicating disks to ASM disk groups for those disks that are not shared with other applications.
•Choose a hardware RAID stripe size that is a power of 2 and less than or equal to the size of the ASM allocation unit.
•Avoid using a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) because an LVM would be redundant. However, there are situations where certain multipathing or third party cluster solutions require an LVM. In these situations, use the LVM to represent a single LUN without striping or mirroring to minimize the performance impact.
•For Linux, when possible, use the Oracle ASMLIB feature to address device naming and permission persistency.
ASMLIB provides an alternative interface for the ASM-enabled kernel to discover and access block devices. ASMLIB provides storage and operating system vendors the opportunity to supply extended storage-related features. These features provide benefits such as improved performance and greater data integrity.
one more question about fdisk partitioning. is it correct that we should only create one partition per luns (5x200Gb luns in my case) is it because this way i will have more consistent set of luns( in term of performance)?

  • ASM how many Gigs per disk group for performance.

We are migrating from a file system based database 1Tbyte 10.2.0.3 on IBM AIX to a database on Solaris 9 10.2.0.3 with ASM.
Our old system functioned well by breaking up the IO into 15 file system 72.5 GB each over three SAN arrays.
We have no experience of ASM and are wondering if we should break up the IO in a similar way for performance or just have one large disk group? There must be advantages/disadvantages one way or another. Looking for advise.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.

ASM performs striping automatically so you don't need to care about creating multiple disk groups for performance. But if you have different disks in terms of speed and size, then create individual groups for each disk.

  • How do I define 2 disk groups for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window

    Hello,
It may sound too easy to someone but I need to ask it anyway.
I am in the middle of building Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Linux. I have 2 storage and I created three LUNs in each of storage so 6 LUNs in total look in both of servers. If I choose NORMAL as a redundancy level, is it right to choose my 6 disks those are created for OCR_VOTE at the grid installation? Or should I choose only 3 of them and configure mirroring at latter stage?
The reason why I am asking this is that I didn't find any place to create asm disk group for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window. In fact, I would to like to create two disk groups in which one of groups contains three disks those were brought from storage 1 and the second one contains rest three 3 disk that come from the last storage.
I believe that you will understand the manner and help me on choosing proper way.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    You have 2 Storage H/W.
You will need to configure a Quorum ASMDisk to store a Voting Disk.
Because if you lose 1/2 or more of all of your voting disks, then nodes get evicted from the cluster, or nodes kick themselves out of the cluster.
You must have the odd number of voting disk (i.e 1,3 or 5)  one voting disk per ASM DISK, So 1 Storage will hold more voting disk than another storage.
    (e.g 3 Voting Disk - 2 voting stored in stg-A and 1 voting disk store in stg-B)
If fail the storage that hold the major number of  Voting disk the whole cluster (all nodes) goes down. Does not matter if you have a other storage online.

  • How many Disk do we store Flash back on?

    We used oracle 10G,
    we have archive logs 26G/day
we think of flash back on.
How many disk do we store flashback files?
Please help us for informations, when we need oracle flashback?

Are you asking about raid levels? If you are only copying your archive logs to one destination, then you should at least have your archivelog disk mirrored, if not a higher raid level like level 5. It would be advisable to archive to multiple locations. Remember, if you lose one of your logs before they can be backed up, you will lose data if you have to perform a recovery. The amount of disk space you would need would depend on how many archive logs you intend to keep available on disk. Also, are you using the flashback area for your rman backups? You would also need to have additional space for each of these backups you want to have available on disk. Remember, you can always backup archivelogs to tape and delete them.
My general rule of thumb is that I like to only use up to 60% of a disk available for logfiles. This way if you have a large spike in DB use for a period of time you are not going to quickly run out of space. In this example if you generate 25G of archive and you want to keep 5 days worth, then you would generate 125G during this time period, I would probably want to have 200G of disk available to give you 60% normal usage.

Hi! I have my Final Cut Studio  3 Upgrade disk set P/N MB643Z/A  SKU 8859092445284  for sale on ebay (300781404751), the auction closes in 3 hours,   I have 6 DVD disks. From my pictures I see I have one white  and 5  Black disks. I had a person tell me I am missing a disk, that there should be 7 disks in total. I hope someone can help me by confirming how many disks I should have and the title of each of them. Also, If I have one missing, do I have any chance of getting one from Apple? and how I would go about getting it? Thanks very much!

    There are 7 disks.
White one is FINAL CUT INSTALL DVD...this has all the apps.  THen the black ones are:
    Audio Content 1
    Audio Content 2
    Audio Content 3
    DVD Studio Pro content

  • How many bytes does a DATE use?

Having trouble finding this in the 10g documentation. How many bytes does a date data type use?
    thanks.

Take a look to the online documentation linked below :
    Oracle® Database SQL Reference
    10g Release 2 (10.2)
    Part Number B14200-02
    Oracle Built-in Datatypes
    expecially code datatype 12.
Valid date range from January 1, 4712 BC to December 31, 9999 AD. The default format is determined explicitly by the NLS_DATE_FORMAT parameter or implicitly by the NLS_TERRITORY parameter. The size is fixed at 7 bytes. This datatype contains the datetime fields YEAR, MONTH, DAY, HOUR, MINUTE, and SECOND. It does not have fractional seconds or a time zone.

I have an iPod Nano 2nd Gen. I want to back up @ 500 songs to CDs. Before I start I was wondering if anyone could tell me how many CDs I would need.

Thanks. Was never able to figure out the conversion between KB and MB. The average file size is 5,600 KB. So how many disks to you think it will take.... 5,600KB x 480 songs = 2,688,000KB. Appreciate it!

  • How many ledger groups to create with 4 ledgers?

    Hello
We are using new GL in ECC 6.0. If I have 4 ledgers/accounting principles say A,B,C,D. How many ledger groups do I need to set up to allow business to select the right number of ledgers to post to?
    4 ledger groups with only 1 ledger assigned: A, B, C, D
3 ledger groups with only  3 ledgers assigned: ABC, BCD, ACD
6 ledger groups with 2 ledgers assigned: AB, BC, CD, AD, AC, BD
1 ledger group with 4 ledgers assigned: ABCD
    In total 14 ledger groups?
    regards
    Arjan

    Hi Arjan,
I strongly feel it should be 4 with A, B, C & D unless you have any specific requirement to group them.
Just as a question, do you have specific business requirement to group each of them?
    Thanks and regards,

Redundancy Level      Minimum Number of Disks
    External           1
    Normal                2
    High                3
If you only have a disk, means you will not be able to implement normal/high redundancy. In external redundancy ASM presumes the data duplication is taken care at a storage level (e.g. mirrored SAN etc.).
structure of normal redundancy & high redundancyRedundancy is actually a data duplication, so let say if a disk in a Disk Group1 fails, and there is a fail over Disk Group B, so ASM will continue operation.
    Must read note for you..
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28301/asm002.htm#ADMQS12079
    Extractions from the link..
Failure groups are used to determine which ASM disks to use for storing redundant copies of data. example, if 2-way mirroring is specified for a file, ASM automatically stores redundant copies of file extents in separate failure groups.

  • How many revolutions of data are required for order analysis?

    Hello,
I have a requirement to collect, process, and save data for several hours at a user specified sampling interval.  I suspect that I will need to use the speed of the motor to determine how many revolutions of data I am collecting.
Is there a minimum number of revolutions of data required for order analysis?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    HI Chris,
Thank you for posting on the National Instruments forum.  To determine how many revolutions of data that you are collecting, you will need to use the tachometer signal that is coming off of your motor and is defined as pulses per revolutions.  With this, the absolute minimum that you need is two pulses to figure out how fast your motor is spinning.  With only two pulses, however, it will be very hard to determine the order information.
I think this KB will help you in figuring out what Window Length you need when doing order analysis.
