How Many Files To Retain On Backup Drive

I currently have a WD 1 TB backup drive which is 550GB full of backups. These are comprised of 22 different backup files. My question is whether or not anyone can give me any guidance whether or not something is wrong since it is taking up so much space and if not how does one go about selectively ridding some of these backups?
Sorry if this is such a novice question but I am perplexed with such a large HD being so full.
Thanks

If the files were made by +Time Machine,+ see #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If they were made by +Backup 3.2,+ they'll be "recycled" automatically after a period of time, depending on what you specified for the schedule.
As William says, if they were made by some other application, what app was it?

  • Lion is beautiful, but where is info in window about size, how many files, etc.?

I love Lion, but the windows, when I open a folder or drive, do not contain the info at the bottom to tell how many files, how much space is left, etc.
Has this been eliminated from Lion? Is there a setting I need to access to see information like that in the window that way it has been on Macs for the last 32 years?

Good there a people who know what is going on.
    Sincere thanks to you both.

  • Is there a limit to how many files bridge can view at one time?

Our company works with high volumes of images and we would like to use Bridge to organize, search, and view these images prior to working on them in Adobe Photoshop/Premiere ETC..  Is there a limit to how many files that Bridge can handle at one time?  We have hundreds of thousands of videos and photos.

Many have found that using more then 5000 files per folder can slow down performance but this depends on system resources (fast processor and much RAM). However Video is not always the strongest point of Bridge as it seems due to some other posts.
And since you talk about a company, you have to be aware that Bridge is not designed nor official supported for use over a network. A dedicated DAM like Canto Cumulus or Portfolio Server might be more suitable for this tasks but they also come with a price I'm afraid.

How many files that JAR can bundle into a single file?

The are no limitations inherent in the ZIP file format (jar files are basically just zip files).
    The only limitations I can think of are;
    available disk space
maximum file size (for some filesystems)

  • How many files should be used to make 1 website?

This is a relatively simple begininner question, but my begininner tutorials have lead me astray and confused me a bit.
(I did katie's cafe tutorial and it has an Embed file, a Master Page file, a Visit Page file, a Widgets file, and a Publish file)
I was just wondering how many files I should include for my website. It seems like I will only need one.
Say I have 5 pages on my site, do I need 5 different files? or May I just edit all the pages on 1 adobe-muse file, and when it uploads via FTP it will create the seperate pages for me.
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hello Ben,
You're correct in thinking that you need only one file for your site with 5 pages, and that you don't need 5 files for 5 pages.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question: How many have ever gotten a "backup full" message?

Out of morbid curiosity, how many users of TM have ever gotten a warning that the backup drive was full? And I do not mean afterwards, but a popup is supposed to alert the user of an impending fullness before anything untoward occurs.
My backup drives are too large for that message, so I have never seen it.
    Anyone?

    Here/s what I know:
On a weekly and monthly basis TM consolidates the backups and is supposed to remove files from the backup that have been deleted from the main drive. Obviously this may free up some space on the backup drive. As the drive fills up to the point where there is not enough space for the current backup then TM will delete the oldest versions of backed up files until it frees up enough space to complete the current backup. It is supposed to ask if it's OK to delete old backups. If it cannot remove enough old files to satisfy the required space for the current backup then it's supposed to pop up an alert that the disk is full.
True, but the box I have checked says to TM to warn me of any deletions, so at best it is misleading.
During weekly and monthly consolidations TM may delete files without informing you. It's my understanding that this is simply a normal TM process so the user is not alerted first. I have no specific information that confirms the notification when you check the option to warn before deleting will occur during the consolidation process. It isn't clear if that alert is supposed to occur during any consolidation if old files are deleted, or if it's only supposed to alert you when the drive has filled up to the point where the current backup's space requirements can not be satisfied without first deleting old files.
Again, the checked box does not have any "if's" I expect a warning.
These "inner" workings of TM seem not to have much documentation for what is going on, why, exactly what happens when a disk is full - the assumption is that TM consolidates weekly and monthly backups of older files so they can be deleted without screwing up the existing hierarchy.
From reports on the forums users have received disk full alerts without ever seeing any other alerts. But the information they usually post is so empty of decent reliable data that it's hard to know what's going on. Don't usually know what version of TM they were using, the reports are typically scarce on information about any prior alerts, so it's difficult to formulate what TM is really doing. Apple hides so much of TM from the user that we are essentially forced to deal with it like a black box, hence the difficulty in troubleshooting some of TM's more obscure errors.
All, I've learned about it since it's release with the first Leopard betas is that it's too unreliable for my tastes. It's extremely complex and Apple has hidden much of it behind a pretty user interface. Even most of the KB articles provide the barest information.
I even wonder if Apple fully understands it. Again, I point to the well-known, documented occasional backup failure bug that began with 10.5.3 and has not been fixed. I suspect nobody really knows why, or how to fix it, because if they knew, it would have been fixed since this occurred a very long time ago. It may never get fixed, FAIK, until a new OS is released.

  • Delete large file from Time Machine backup drive?

I recently selected to exclude my Aperture.library file from Time Machine, but only after it had done about 8 backups already... the file doesn't exist in the latest folder on my TM hard drive but it is there in previous ones.
how can i delete this file from my TM backups and regain 40gb? (it won't let you delete it in finder)

    Ewen,
Let me make my self more clear.
Because of the Apple KB article regarding Aperture and Time Macine, that's exactly why i chose to EXCLUDE my aperture.library file from time machine.
Please don't read any negative tone in this, i'm just trying to explain myself.
But hind sight is 20/20, so i was looking for a way to delete the old previous version of the aperture.library that was sitting on my backup time machine drive (useless taking up space)
I apologize for not searching out that KB article, but i didn't think i'd have to do that. I assumed Apple would know how to have Aperture play nice with Time Machine....
Any way all is good. we're all educated now

  • How do I add a 2nd Backup drive to TM

How do I add a secound hard drive for backups in TM?
I have a HD backing up areas of several hard drives but I have run out of space on that terabyte BU drive.
I want to add a second drive to backup files that I don't have space on my current BU Drive for.
How do I add the second drive.
    thanks

Time Machine will only backup to one destination.
The only option you have is to create a RAID set to combine the existing drive with the new drive. This has inherent risks, not least of which is that if you get it wrong you'll wipe the existing drive and your backups now depend on two drives, not one (meaning you've doubled the chance of losing your backups due to a failed drive - if either drive in the backup RAID fails it's all gone).
Note that IIRC you can't do this through the GUI, so you'd have to use the command line. This example assumes your existing TM drive is at /Volumes/ExistingTMDrive and you want to add /dev/disk2 to the array:
    diskutil enableRAID concat /Volumes/ExistingTMDrive
    diskutil addToRAID member disk2 /Volumes/ExistingTMDrive
The above is untested, but should work.

  • How to use iMac as a backup drive for TM

Hello....I recently bought the new macbook...i still have an iMac at home that the rest of the family uses...
is it possible to partition the iMac hard drive so that a chunk of it is used for time machine backups....i dont want to use the whole hard drive cuz eventually it will fill up and i'm afraid that will slow down the iMac....
and are there any drawbacks to using the iMac to backup my macbook?
    Thank in advance

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
That depends on the size of the hard drive and how many gigs were available. Generally, this would be a poor choice for an older Mac. Much more elegant solution is to buy an external firewire hard drive.
EDIT: If you are going to attempt it use Firewire target disk mode.

  • How many files are there in a folder with subfolders ?

¿How do I count the files in a folder with subfolders?

Niel's advice is hardly complicated, but try this one.
    1. Download the free EasyFind.
    2. Open the app and set the options as shown here:
    3. At the right of the interface, choose which drive you want to count all files of.
    4. In the search field, enter a single asterisk * and press Enter.
It will list only visible files in all folders and subfolders. I did this to a drive that didn't have a whole lot on it. This count at the top of the list of items was:
I copy/pasted the output into TextWrangler to see how many lines there were. 401 was the correct number of visible files. The value 441 was the total number of files on the drive including hidden items and folders.

  • How many files are typically created from an mpeg 2 encode?

In FCP I did export - using compressor. Compressor opens my sequence and I encoded it to mpeg 2. The resulting folder has 3 .m2v files. Furthermore as I open each m2v file in quicktime, it appears they are all my exported sequence. I'm trying to understand why it created 3. Thanks.

How many times did you hit submit? Check in Compressor history window, the lower right window.
