How Many Is Too Many?

I only have 2900+ songs imported but my PC (sorry) seems to have slowed down a bit. Is there a way to compress these song files so I dont bog down my system.
According to my system, I have 233GB capacity and 205GB free space (hope this helps).
Thanks In Advance!

Assuming that the stats you listed as capacity/free space is correct it doesn't sound like your music is the cause of your system being slow. Like the previous poster mentioned you can compress your files into a zipped folder to try and help, but it sounds like your system most likely has programs running at start-up that may be slowing it down. If you know how to mess around with your PC (and feel confident in doing so) you can go into msconfig to selective startup to see what you have running and disable some of the programs to see if that is the problem. Of course, what I just said is more detailed than that...you can see more info on it here:

  • How many photos is too much

I realize that this is one of those "your mileage may vary" type questions, but here goes:
How many photos is too much for a single iphoto library? Have people either encountered problems after reaching a certain threshold? Or are there people who have lots of photos with no problems at all?
I am in the process of trying to consolidate several iphoto libraries into one huge library. I say "trying," because I am running into problems with importing thousands of photos. The master library will have around 50,000 photos, although a good many of them will probably be duplicates (which is another hassle).
Because the consolidation is such a pain, I am wondering if it will be worth it. Is 50,000 photos OK for a library? What about 100,000?
Thanks for any words of wisdom.
    rob

In addition to Terence's suggestions make sure that in the Photos mode you have the Event titles displayed and only open those events you're working with. Having no Event titles displayed and all of thumbnails displayed will greatly slow down iPhoto whether it be 6 or 7.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How much is too many?

    Have an iPad 16gb.
Curious - At what point and how many Apps does it take for the device to be affected and slow down?

    Ask 300 people, get 300 answers .....
I rarely have more than 4 or 5 apps in my recents tray at any one time. But you can bet your bottom dollar that my browser - and it doesn't matter which of the five that I have I am using at the time - will crash on me every day - day after day - 3 or 4 times a day. I seem to have particularly bad luck with the iPad internet experience. When I use the Mercury browser - and it has done this since day one - I constantly get the low memory warning - even if I have closed all apps and have just restarted the iPad.
That's kind of a bummer for me because my iPad has become more of an mobile internet toy and email reader than a work machine. That's OK - I had no problem spending the money and taking the chance to see what I would get out of it because I wasn't quite sure what I would be using it for but I knew I really wanted one.
There really is a point to this and it is that no one has any way of knowing for certain how many is too many. As I have told you - I can run one solitary app and crash with great frequency. It's just something that only you can find out on your own as you continue to use the device.

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • Memory usage Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 - How many images are too many?

My wife and I are having a discussion about the memory allocation of Adobe PSE 9.
We run both of our profiles logged in on a 27" iMac top end from May, 2010, with 12 GB of RAM.
She had a number of pictures open (let's say 20 - 25) that she was working on editing.  Trying to shut the program down or work within it, the spinning wheel of death made a cameo appearance and brought the system to a crawl.
I ran Activity Monitor and it said that she had 746 MB of memory free out of 7.39 GB active and 11.27 GB used.  With each image I closed, I gained an additional 5 - 7 MB of free memory.
Once I force quit PSE 9, that number jumped to nearly 2.5 GB free.
For those with experience using PSE 9, can you give me an indication:
How many images do you have open that you're working with at the same time?
For those people with more Mac OS X experience, would having 750 MB free out of 12 GB reduce the computer to a crawl?
    Thanks in advance.

As a general rule of thumb (some will disagree with me) if your machine has about 500MB of Free RAM or less this will slow down the computer significantly. Also as a general rule you can never have too much RAM. One nice thing about your machine is it can be upgraded up to as much as 32GB of RAM however 8GB chips are EXTREMELY expensive right now and currently only OWC sells a kit. You can upgrade to 16GB for a lot less, whether you need it or not no one here can say for sure. I would continue to keep an eye on Activity Monitor and keep my first sentence in the back of your mind.

  • Airport Express--How many is too many?

I am running a new Airport Extreme base station with 3 Airport Express units to extend the range over about a 6200 sq ft house. My wife set up her office at the far extreme from the base station and, although her signal was somewhat intermittent, it worked well enough to allow her to connect to the internet with adequate functionality (although her signal strength was generally at or below 5 Mbps). After I successfully installed a 4th Express using Airport Utility, and located it in her office, her PC connectivity to the network suffered, and a printer connected to the Express in her office was not recognized on the network and wouldn't print. Do I have too many Expresses on the base station such that the signal is degrading performance for the whole network? Thanks.

If using the "Extend" option instead of a WDS with all the stations being of band type "n", is there a limit to how many Express "n" I can use to extend an Extreme "n".
I currently have one Express "n" extending (not WDS) my Extreme "n", and I would like to add one more. Is there a limit to how many can be used to extend the wireless network wirelessly?
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • How many machines can I down load my product too? And how to remove from one and add to another?

How many machines can I down load my product too?

If you purchased a download from Adobe, you can find the download link in your Adobe account. If you have a serial number, you can download a trial version from the Acrobat product page at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html. You can enter your serial number when you run the trial to convert it to a licensed copy. If you registered your serial number, it will be listed in your Adobe account. To access your account, click My Adobe at the top right of the Adobe.com site, just beneath the main navigation bar.

  • How to fix: Too many Primary Partitions ? G770

    Hello,

I've been told that to try and fix it in Linux is too risky .
I set up the unallocated 20gb partition.
Can I just merge it into the 29gb Extended Partition ?
If I did merge, How would I access it ? Which Partition is it an extension of ?
I am on thin ice here, and would rather fix the prob in Window7 , because I am brand new to Linux .
Here is the PartitionsDetail using AomeiPartitionAssistant -note the differences:

Is there a way to tell what's in the partitions , especially the two 29gb partitions and the 14gb partition ?
Worst case: Is there a way to reset my 'Lenovo G770' computer back to factory settings under win7 ?
I think I'll add this Post to the Win7 Forum, since I hope to fix it via Win7 .

  • TS3276 how many addressees are too many for the iCloud server?

I want to send a collective email. How many addresses will Icloud accept?

When working with lots of shorter sequences, i find it much easier to negotiate around the different scenes etc.
If you label each sequence correctly, or logically... ie- intro, car chase, love scene etc, you can jump there quicker than scrolling along a huge timeline...
Also, consider processor load... FCP works alot quicker and efficiently with shorter sequences, as it's not having to calculate the content of a huge timeline... using the waveform display for example.... if you have the waveform visible, it can take FCP ages to reveal the graph down a long timeline, whereas, with a shorter timeline, it's virtually instant.
The main thing to look at during your edit process is organisation... you want to work smoothly, efficiently, and with as little anxiety as possible... organising your sequences for the initial assembly edit can help keep a clear head.
Another advantage of using lots of different sub-sequences is 'un-seen error'... Even the most experienced, Uber-FCP-Masters make mistakes... and when working on shorter sequences, it's much easier to see those mistakes... or rather, mistakes jump out at you more obviously... When editing really long sequences, sometimes a weird slip, or slight momentary laps of concentration can cause something to mess up right down the other end of the timeline... and it goes un-noticed...
When you have finished all your 'sub-sequences', copy and paste into one master sequence... do not nest the sub-sequences into the master...
    all the best

  • How many pages is too many

When merging files is there a limit to how many pages can be sucessfully merged together to send to a printer?
Is there a way to further compress 10,000 pages to ensure printability?

PDF files support a vast number of pages in terms of the file structure (it depends on how complex each page is, but you can easily have over a million pages in a single file). The issue is one of memory management - Acrobat is a 32-bit application so it will run very slowly if the files are extremely large, and there's a practical limit on the size of the printer spool (and of course the paper tray!).

  • How to handle too many songs for disk space?

I have a limited collection of fongs on my primary hard drive; most of my collection - about 500GB - is kept on network attached storage. When I install iTunes it copies the music files in My Music to its iTunes Media folder. That's OK for the limited size of My Music - I have enough room on the primary hard drive for the copies. But there is no way I can store a copy of all the files on the NAS. So how do I 'catalog' those files, as well as those on my primary hard drive?

OK, I follow this - except that I read elsewhere (in this forum if memory serves me correctly) that one reason to use the option to copy media to iTunes was so that iTunes would not create duplicate entries - which it seems very fond of doing, no matter how many times I delete them.
If this is not the purpose of the Media folder, then what purpose does it have?
Assuming that I elect to stop this copying, what is the recommended way of removing all the files in the media folder: blunt force with Windows Explorer, or is there an implicit/explicit command somewhere in iTunes that I haven't understood?
And is iTunes limited to just the 1 location for 'sources' of music - or is that what the 'add folder to Library' is meant to do?

  • At max how many columns is advisable to create in a table/view

    Hi All,
I have two transaction table from which i want to create a simple view or materialized view. But the number of columns is about 200. So i want to know at max how many columns is advisable from the performance point of view.
Even though i will create 200 columns in a view , for a perticular client installation i may not use all the columns.
one more thing i will never use 200 columns in the select statement . At a time i will use only 4/5 columns.
It may happen from this four column one column will be the 1st and 2nd column will be the 200th one.
I want to know how it affects the performance and in which scenario . Please help if any body knows or already faced this kind of scenario.
    I am using oracle 10g .

    thanks for ur reply .
We are going to use this view in a report , so if i will create it as simple view it will affect report performance. because the view script is too long ...so every time quring to a view will decrease the performance.
Are you asking me if it will? I think it probably won't but of course you have the means to test it to be sure, right?
As u said MV should be done with minimum possible column . what can be the maximum column in MV ..??It would be defined by the limits on:
    * The maximum number of columns that a table can contain
    * The size of the query needed to define the select statement
    * Limitations on queries needed to maintain the data
