How many is too much?

On our GW Messenger 2.0.2 system is on a dedicated Netware 6.5 server, we only allow users who are on a Maintained Contact list on the Default Policy.
The popularity is Greatly increasing.....
We now have 62 Group Folders and over 400 users. Usually about 300 concurrent users.
My Question/Concern is they now want to add 20 more folder groups.
I expanded the default "Maximum number of folders" from 50 to 60, now I need to increase again.
What is the Pro/Con of this?

  • Airport Express--How many is too many?

I am running a new Airport Extreme base station with 3 Airport Express units to extend the range over about a 6200 sq ft house. My wife set up her office at the far extreme from the base station and, although her signal was somewhat intermittent, it worked well enough to allow her to connect to the internet with adequate functionality (although her signal strength was generally at or below 5 Mbps). After I successfully installed a 4th Express using Airport Utility, and located it in her office, her PC connectivity to the network suffered, and a printer connected to the Express in her office was not recognized on the network and wouldn't print. Do I have too many Expresses on the base station such that the signal is degrading performance for the whole network? Thanks.

If using the "Extend" option instead of a WDS with all the stations being of band type "n", is there a limit to how many Express "n" I can use to extend an Extreme "n".
I currently have one Express "n" extending (not WDS) my Extreme "n", and I would like to add one more. Is there a limit to how many can be used to extend the wireless network wirelessly?
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • AI CS5 Font handling, how many are too many fonts.  I have 14000 fonts

Since I installed a font pack that I purchased, Adobe is sluggish...opening, saving files, closing files...getting a lot of "not responding" and then it returns to working condition.  I can select text, right click, but clicking Fonts does nothing.  Is there a setting I can change or am I stuck having to unistall fonts.

I like to have lots of choices.
So do I. But I still don't like having to plunder through every piece of fabric in the house in order to find a matching pair of socks. I also can never seem to have enough motorcycle tools, but I sure don't throw them all into a single tool bag, either.
Anyone who likes to collect a ridiculous number of fonts (as do I) should organize them so it doesn't take three forevers to find a suitable one. Regardless of performance, you should be using a font manager that lets you organize them into stylistic groups, and/or groups for particluar projects.
I've been using Bitstream Font Navigator (comes bundled with Corel Draw) on Windows for many years without much trouble. I do sometimes find it more reliable to quit and restart Illustrator when using BFN, but it's usually not necessary.

  • I get a "Too many recipients" Thunderbird error msg when trying to send a group email -- how many is too many ? does Thunderbird have a limit?

My ISP says it doesn't impose a limit on the number of recipients in a group email, BUT still I get a Thunderbird error msg. Why?

Well, no, because 4 or 5 times a year, someone writes in with pretty much exactly your question because they too have had a message refused with the "too many recipients" warning. We suggest they use a Mailing List and all is well.

  • How many is too many pictures on iphoto

will having a couple thousand pictures on iphoto slow down my macbook pro? It seems to run slow getting pictures to come up and even on other safari web pages?

I would consider an external drive to store your photos at this point, you are getting up there. It will free up space on your internal drive, then you get to have another go-round:)
By the way my wife killed 2 MBP's by ot clearing her drive of too many photos.
Drives are cheap, but some photos are priceless.
    Just my thoughts;)

  • Conditional Build Tags - How Many is Too Many?

Has anyone ever run into problems generating a project because of too many conditional build tags? I'm new to this and considering using quite a few in a particular project - unless I find that overuse will compromise the project on the backend. I'd really like to find that out before I put the work in. Thanks!

    Hi there
From the simple standpoint of ease of use, I'd say you want to limit the number to as few as you can.
Can you tell us more about why you are using them? I ask because later versions of RoboHelp offer things that help us out in this area. You may well discover you don't need build tags at all. But we will reserve that judgment until after we know more.
What version of RoboHelp are you using? What RoboFlavor?

  • Kernel Panic's:  How many is too many?

I have had everything replaced in my MBP over the past 6 months. There is nothing inside that came with the computer. My last trip to the Genius Bar was in July where the memory was replaced. I was told that the next problem would get me a replacement MBP.
I have had 4 kernel panics with the grey screen telling me to restart my computer. Don't know if that is excessive or not.
I have no clue how to read the logs so I don't have a clue what is causing them. They all seem to occur when I have Firefox open or opening.
Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks much.

Well, I took my MBP back to the Apple Store due to the Kernel Panics. The previous visit they had replaced the RAM and told me if any further issues they would replace the machine. So, two weeks later I now have my second replacement machine. The first one lasted 12 months, the second one also 12 months. Now I have the really nice new MBP 15" with Snow Leopard and all the bells and whistles.
Hope this one lasts more than 12 months. All have been within warranty and replaced with no questions. I did purchase Applecare which I would HIGHLY recommend to all, especially if you have a notebook computer.

  • How many is too many columns in a composite index

    hi all, (using 10g r2)
i do realize that there is not an exact right answer, but im more curious to find out how others have handled this situation, for better or for worse...
i know the literal upper bound on the number of columns that can be part of a composite index but i was wondering if any of you had come up with what you feel to be practical or upper bounds on the number of columns in a composite index? Also, can anyone share info on what might be strategy to figure out at what point the number of columns in the index creates a situation where updating/maintaining the index outweighs any performance gain you get from the composite index? Thanks in advance! -- jp

This is situational - like everything else, it "depends".
Testing can be done by timing the results of the index variations you want to check. Time multiple uses of the index for DML and query operations involving the index. I like to track the numbers in seconds and put the values in spreadsheets for later reference and easy summation; you can put the data in tables to and use SQL for analysis if you want. I use dbms_utiltiy.get_time in pl/sql (get first time before run, get second time after run, time in fractiions of a second is second time minus first time) or set timing on in sql*plus (hour-minute-second) to obtain run times.
Efficiency depends on what the compsite index is for. Are you trying to enforce uniqueness? Use the composite for data retrieval? Adding exra columns to avoid table access?
Due to maintenance considerations indexes should not have more columns than needed. "duplicate" indexes with the same columns (like "id" vs "id, name") are usually redundant and one index (the one with the fewer columns) can usually be removed.

  • How Many Is Too Many?

I only have 2900+ songs imported but my PC (sorry) seems to have slowed down a bit. Is there a way to compress these song files so I dont bog down my system.
According to my system, I have 233GB capacity and 205GB free space (hope this helps).
    Thanks In Advance!

Assuming that the stats you listed as capacity/free space is correct it doesn't sound like your music is the cause of your system being slow. Like the previous poster mentioned you can compress your files into a zipped folder to try and help, but it sounds like your system most likely has programs running at start-up that may be slowing it down. If you know how to mess around with your PC (and feel confident in doing so) you can go into msconfig to selective startup to see what you have running and disable some of the programs to see if that is the problem. Of course, what I just said is more detailed than that...you can see more info on it here:

  • Kernel panics- how many is too many?

I use my MBP as my primary computer. It is on approx 12-14 hours a day. I am a heavy Photoshop, Illustrator, Aperture, VMWare user and use some more scientific software in addition to Office Word and Excel. I work in 2 locations and my MBP sleeps with the lid closed when I travel. I shut down every night.
Of late, I have been experiencing 2 kernel panics a week. As a recent OS X convert, I was wondering if this is normal behavior?

    Thank you for your responses.
The panic.log from the console doesn't really give much useful information (at least to me). The 'Backtrace' fields, which I assume trace back system events till the panic are different for the different panic events. I am including the relevant lines:
    Tue Oct 16 00:47:02 2007
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0035E7BD): mbuf address out of range 0xffffffff
    # yadda yadda yadda
    Sat Oct 13 11:16:35 2007
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x001A4A55): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, Type 14=page fault)
    #yadda yadda yadda
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(5.0.6)@0xc29000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.2)@0x664000
    dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(5.0.6)@0x782000
    com.apple.NVDAResman(5.0.6)@0x782000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.2)@0x664000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(1.4.7)@0x758000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.4.7)@0x773000
    Mon Oct 8 07:40:32 2007
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A4A55): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault)
    #yadda yadda yadda
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.filesystems.smbfs(1.3.7)@0x3d46b000
It seems that the panics have been caused by Nvidia drivers and Samba filesystem. A previous panic was caused by the airport card.
I appreciate your thoughts on this issue. I will give disk util a chance to repair what it can. I am planning to install Leopard anyway, so will keep it as ut is till the Leopard update.
    Thanks

  • How many clusterable things in JNDI tree?

We're starting to try out clustering in WL 5.1 (sp8 on WinNT for now) We're
seeing some odd behavior and we're wondering if the cause is related to JNDI
replication messages. If we deploy just a couple of clusterable rmi
services on two servers in a cluster, things seem to work ok. They maintain
a connection to each other and can be viewed with the Admin console.
However, if we deploy about 200 clusterable things (mostly EBs that by
default have clusterable homes) then things get weird. If we just bring up
one server, things aren't too bad. But when we bring up the second server,
communication between the two servers is only established briefly before we
get a "Timed out server" or something worse.
Someone thought they had read a news post saying that it's not good to have
large number of clusterable things in the JNDI tree because of all the
replication messages caused by this. True? How many is too many? Thanks.

JNDI replication messages only occur when the state of the JNDI tree changes --
which is normally at server startup or shutdown. I would recommend pursuing
this with support as I have been at sites that deployed more EJBs in a cluster
              than this without those problems.

  • How many photos is too much

I realize that this is one of those "your mileage may vary" type questions, but here goes:
How many photos is too much for a single iphoto library? Have people either encountered problems after reaching a certain threshold? Or are there people who have lots of photos with no problems at all?
I am in the process of trying to consolidate several iphoto libraries into one huge library. I say "trying," because I am running into problems with importing thousands of photos. The master library will have around 50,000 photos, although a good many of them will probably be duplicates (which is another hassle).
Because the consolidation is such a pain, I am wondering if it will be worth it. Is 50,000 photos OK for a library? What about 100,000?
Thanks for any words of wisdom.
    rob

In addition to Terence's suggestions make sure that in the Photos mode you have the Event titles displayed and only open those events you're working with. Having no Event titles displayed and all of thumbnails displayed will greatly slow down iPhoto whether it be 6 or 7.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do i get rid of these dumb icons on my menu bar. they are not useful and they take up too much room. why did you do this?

i just upgraded to the new version of firefox. for some inexplicable reason, you've added icons to the left of my personal menu choices in the menu bar. these icons are purely decorative, they take up too much room, and now i can't display as many clickable items in the menu bar. extremely irritating. if you are going to add junk, at least give us the option to not display it. is there a way that i can turn off the display of these useless icons?

thank you! that worked! appreciate how quickly and accurate the support was.
    that said,
it would be nice if the icons were the add-on,
and the default was no icons.
i'm sure the majority of your users would prefer function rather than fluff.
    thanks again, mj
