How many photos is too much

I realize that this is one of those "your mileage may vary" type questions, but here goes:
How many photos is too much for a single iphoto library? Have people either encountered problems after reaching a certain threshold? Or are there people who have lots of photos with no problems at all?
I am in the process of trying to consolidate several iphoto libraries into one huge library. I say "trying," because I am running into problems with importing thousands of photos. The master library will have around 50,000 photos, although a good many of them will probably be duplicates (which is another hassle).
Because the consolidation is such a pain, I am wondering if it will be worth it. Is 50,000 photos OK for a library? What about 100,000?
Thanks for any words of wisdom.

In addition to Terence's suggestions make sure that in the Photos mode you have the Event titles displayed and only open those events you're working with. Having no Event titles displayed and all of thumbnails displayed will greatly slow down iPhoto whether it be 6 or 7.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

  • How many photos are too many to import at once?

My good ol' iPhoto 6.0.6  crashes these days when I try to import photos from my iPhone to my MacBook. I inadvertantly have built up to more than 4000+ photos on phone (at least 3000 already on iPhoto but I did not delete from phone) so trying to get most recent set imported (using 'only import non-duplicates). (And yes, will want to delete a good chunk off of phone once I know they are safely stored elsewhere, and backed up, so that iPhoto doesn't have to search and compare thousands at a time.)
I suspect I am out of luck bc. I see that I already have 12 890 photos (38.GB) in iPhoto. Using OX 10.6.8, 1GB ram and have 156 GB available. Is my set-up too old/small to handle such a big import all at once? It seems to quit part way into the import and when I open iPhoto the next time there are files to be recovered. I wanted to upgrade to the newest iPhoto but I think my OS doesn't support it. I know I will have to upgrade my whole computer soon but had hoped among other things to get these photos sorted with what I have now.
    Any help gratefully appreciated.

With 1 gig of Ram yes it will be very easy to overwhelm the import process.
Use Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) to get the files from your phone to a folder on the desktop, then import from there in batches.

  • How many states are too much?

    Hi,
Is 20 to 35 states in an application considered too many?  Each state will reveal a different interactive dialogue box with two clickable icons.
    Thanks.

It depends on your application. If you really need it and if you find there is no other alternative then you can use it...
No one can judge is it too many or less ...it completely depends on client requirement..

  • How many photos can I put in elements

I just recently bought a new computer.  I had someone else transfer all my files to the new computer.  I have been using Elements for years now (different versions).  I now have version 12.  Along the years, unfortunately, my photos became very mixed up with some on my hard drive and some on 2 external drives.  So, I think I have now loaded them all into one folder on my new computer.  I would like to import them into Elements.  I know I have not done this correctly and at this point, probably have lost all my tags and categories, etc.  So, I'm basically resigning myself to starting over and just loading them all in as new.  My question is how many photos will Organizer hold?  Now, I realize it is not really holding the photo merely a thumbnail that is pointing to the actual photo location. I thought if that was the case, it could hold an endless amount of "thumbnails".  My husband says that is incorrect.  Right now I have a little over 100,000 photos!!  I tried loading them all once but received conflicting messages that they loaded/did not load.  They eventually were not there. I'm trying again but am wondering if this is just too many photos.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brenda

First, let me tell you "thanks" for responding to my question.  I really like using Elements (but am not as savvy as I should be after all these years) but have a hard time resolving issues with Adobe. So, I appreciate you getting back to me.
The good news is almost all my photos did load into Organizer the second time I tried!  It is missing about 300 because "the format was not supported" or something.  I'm not too concerned about these.  My husband keeps back ups so I'm sure we have them somewhere. I wouldn't be able to tell which ones they are anyway!
Just for info. I have an HP Envy laptop running Windows 8.1.
I was having an issue with getting the "sharing" mail feature going but finally received the verification code after adding the Adobe email address to my contacts (good advice from another discussion).
So, I guess one of the other big questions I have is about the "tags" on my photos.  When the photos were being imported this time, it did ask me what tags I wanted to import.  I selected "all" and it looked like it worked but when I open the "tags/info" view, none of my tags are there.  Do you think they are still on the photos and if so, how do I "show" them?
    Thanks, again,
    Brenda

  • How many photos can i download on a mac pro?

how many photos can i download on a mac pro?

That's like asking how many cows can I get into a field.  It depends on the size of the field, size of the cows, the terrain of the field, etc.  We could use a bit more information on what you're trying to accommplish:
1 - where are the photos being downloaded from.
2 - how big are the photos?
3 - where are you going to put the photos, i.e. into folders, into an iPhoto library?
4 - how big is the hard drive in the Mac Pro and how much free space do you have on it?
    etc., etc, etc......

  • Is there a limit to how many photos can be stored on an iPad using version 5.1.1?

I am having a devil of a time syncing my wife's original iPad with iTunes. I believe that there is a limit to how many photos can be stored on the iPad. It has 20GB of empty storage space, so it's not a space issue.
Certain albums refuse to sync. I cannot figure out why those albums, in particular, will not sync. If I delete albums, they disappear from the iPad Photo application, so some synchronizing is happening.
    Help.

First, thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
Let me be a little more specific in describing my problems.
I have about 8,000 images in iPhoto on an older iMac. All of the iPhoto functions appear to work correctly.
I have created about 50 albums in iPhoto, and about 20 of these are of interest to my wife, so she'd like to copy them to her early iPad.
ITunes shows the albums correctly when I select what I want to sync to her iPad. In other words, iTunes correctly represents what is in iPhoto. 1:1 correspondence in albums.
However, when I sync approximately 25 albums with her iPad, 3-5 albums refuse to copy over to the iPad. The total number of images that is available on her iPad is 1680. My first thought was that there might be a limit to the number of images. There is plenty of memory available on the iPad (over half).
Thank you so much for your time.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

  • How many photos can the Aperture Library hold ????

Just trying to work out the limits for photos for Aperture ? How many photos do you folks have in your libraries ?
    Cheers Darren

As you get close to 750,000 you begin to run into problems with administrative tasks taking too long.  Repair and Rebuild will take days, not hours.  Upgrading a Library that large is also better measured in days than in hours.  The longest operation I've done took 82 hours.
Because of my time limitations (not the computer's) I did not grow this test Library beyond 750,000 Images, which I consider, as a rule-of-thumb, the practical limit for an Aperture Library running on c. 2014 equipment.  (YMMV — a lot of variables in there.)
Just for some sense of scale, if you looked at each Image in a Library with 750,000 Images for 1 second and never blinked or paused, it would be more than 8 ½ days until you'd "seen" all of them.  (750000 /60 /60 /24, or just put "750000 seconds is how many days?" into Google for an impressive use of their built-in converter.)

  • CD burn  - how many photos?

I just ordered the Tiger upgrade and expect to perform the upgrade within the week. Before I do anything, I want to back-up all my photos onto CDs so that I don't lose any during the upgrade. About how many photos should fit on a CD? Also, (probably a really stupid question) can you usse a Sharpie marker on the CD to identify its contents?

How big is your iPhoto Library folder? If it's not much larger than about 600MB, just drag it from your Pictures folder to a blank CD and burn a copy. If it's bigger than that, (but less than about 4.5 GB) and you've got access to a DVD burner, use a blank DVD instead. If you break it up into segments, you'll sacrifice much (if not all) of the organization your library currently has when you reimport the pieces.

  • How many photos can you load into Organizer and Editor

How many photos can you load into Organizer and Editor at one time.  I receive the error message, "Unable to Import Files", which says "You exceeded number of files that can be selecteed and imported at once...."  What is the number?  Secondly is there a way around this for either the Organizer or Editor to work on thousands of photos at the same time?
    Thanks

I have never heard of this particular limit before.
Please understand, this appears to be the limit you can import into the Organizer at one time -- you can have as many photos as you want in the Organizer; but apparently you have to import in batches rather than all at once.
I don't think it applies to the editor; and I can't imagine wanting to have more then a few files in the editor at any one time ... even if you could open 2000 photos in the editor at once, what sense would that make?

  • How many photos

    Hi
Does anyone know approximately how many photos I can import into iDVD and then burn on to a DVD? And what resolution I should used.
    Thanks

Did you wish to present the photos thru a set top DVD Player eventually?
If so, limit your iDVD Slideshows to 99 or less per slideshow.
    or
Or do you mean .... I'd like to load as many photos as possible onto a standard Verbatim / Maxell 4.7GB DVD-R and I want to know exactly how many will fit onto this media since I plan to use my mac only to present them? In Theory, starting with iDVD 6 you could have up to 99x99= 9801 images

  • How many photos fit into 2 GB space?

    1)  How many photos are supposed to fit into a 2 GB Album space?  (I could only download 380 photos - 330 went to My Galleries and 50 to the Album)........
Is this correct?  have I punched a wrong button? or did I punch enough buttons?  How do I get the 330 photos from My Galleries into the Album??
    2)  On the 2 GB Stored space - How do I find where the  On Line Storage is??
Per my calculation,  the 380 photos downloaded to Photoshop. com equals to 190 photos per 1 GB -- that is not that many!
I am running on the thought process that I could download between 500 and 900 photos on 2 GB's.
    Appreciate any help.

That's kind of like asking how long is a piece of string. It depends on how large the file size is for the photos you're uploading. If you're talking 30 MB per image, that's a lot fewer than you'll get if each photo is a 50K jpg.

  • Where do I see how many photos (and movies) are in my Revel library?

I see no place that states how many photos or movies are in Revel.

    Hi Pattie,
Thanks for the reply...but here's the status:
    A.
I'm in the Revel program downloaded on my desktop...not on its web site...and I made an album but can't find any place where it shows the number of photos in that album.
As I view Mel's Library page and go to: View/Added By there is a total in the upper left corner that shows the total photos Added by ME.
But when viewing photos in my library: View/ All Photos by Date in either Grid or Track there is no total anywhere on the page. Each track has it's total and that's it.
    I don't understand how Revel ID's a Duplicate.
A window, Skipped Photos, pops up and states, "X photos were duplicates" indicating that they were not uploaded - and that  is supported by the math (in 3 out of 5 uploads): Selected photos minus Videos and Dupes = # of photos uploaded.
However, on the last upload of 2000 Selected photos, the window said there were 2 duplicates. I counted 19 identical photos! Also without Revel identifying what the dupes actually were (by its reckoning) I have no way of determining what was not uploaded. All VERY confusing.
When uploading using the download program on my laptop Revel won't upload videos.
    B.
I went to the website and yes, when I click on the album it shows the photo count at the bottom. However, in order to get to the bottom of 10,000+ photos in the Library is a major and lengthy process as clicking on the side bar only takes me down a few photos with each click...and not to the end! There's no way to easily get to the bottom!  Scrolling the photos is equally slow and useless when all I'm trying to see is the total count! click on Sort oldest 1st and the newest go to the top! and the reverse is true of the other!
