How may I best install OSX 10.6 onto a OSX 10.5.8 G5 PPC, with optimum results ?

The computer will no longer receive auto updates as it is too old, as I understand it. The problem being the poor thing is now being plagued with numerous bugs and Java errors which make it almost impossible to use. Am currently using both Fire Fox and Safari (which ever best suits the task at hand). I have read the forum and found an entry suggesting the OSX 10.6.8, to fix the issues. How realistic is this, and is it easily installed or are there separate instructions for this process?
The system in question is a Power Mac G5,(PPC 7.3) speed is 1.8GHz, memory is 2GB, Cashe per CPU is 512kb, CPU's are 2. Currently running OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. I hope all the requirements have been met to aid you in your reply. Thank you for your kind response in advance.

What Niel said, but you can try upgrading Java itself Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10
Or if you really want to eek out the last useable bits of this Tower, install Ubuntu or another suitable Linux for the Power PC chip.

  • How may I best serve this community?

    Howdy!
First off, if this is the wrong location, my apologies. This seemed like the best choice at the time of writing.
To keep things as short as possible, I just wanted to help this community but have been contemplating how I would best do that. So, I figured I will detail a bit about my background and simply ask where I should spend time lurking around and helping out.
I'm a long time geek and have been in Linux for about a decade now. I've been working at a (hopefully respectable) web host company as a Linux administrator for over a year now which has been enlightening and quite fun, and has also recently brought to my attention that I could be considered a Linux professional. I also love to use Linux at home for all things possible, and specifically the Arch side of Linux. Before all this I was chasing my passion of software development, so I also have background in code, API documentation, debugging and all else that comes with.
So, where may I fit best to help out?
    - These forums (which topic?)
    - Bug Squashing (where do I start?)
    - Code documenting
    - something else?
To be fair I do realize I can help wherever/whenever I can, though I do that anyways. I was hoping for an answer with more inside information on anything that may be lacking that could use more focus.
If you scoff at this post for any reason, I would love a private message letting me know what I did wrong, no worries. I won't even respond if you'd prefer. I just don't mind criticism and don't want to step on any toes. I like it in Archlandia, and figured it can't hurt to ask.

The wiki could use some help.
You can go through https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ArchWiki:Requests and see if you're knowledgeable enough to fix these issues. Sometimes it's just some simple but repetitive editing needed.
    Please read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ArchWiki:About , https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Help:Editing and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Help:Style first.
If you have any questions, fire away.

  • How do I re-install osx lion

I would like to re-install OSX Lion on my MacBook.  I have previously loaded it from the APP Store but can't find th epath to get to it again.  Can anyone help?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do you re-install OSX on MBA?

    So, just out of curiosity
Does the MBA come with any installation DVDs?
How do you re-install them if you need to do so?
Is there a possibility to restore the OS to
    its original factory settings?
    Regards

    Hi,
as every Mac it comes with installer DVDs and you can install these either
    a) via the optional superdrive
    b) via remote install / disk sharing
If you take a backup directly after installation via SuperDuper, Carbon copy Cloner or TimeMachine you can restore that state easily.
    Cheers,

  • How do I fresh-install OSX ML without the disk?

    Hello guys,
Sorry I am kind of newbie with this stuff but I have a question and I hope you can help.
I have a Macbook Pro 2010, it originally had "OSX Snow Leopard" installed and it came with a "recovery disk".
So, when OSX Mountain Lion came up, I bought the digital version from the Apple Store and installed it, so my mac is currently running on Mountain Lion.
Now, I need to backup my stuff and then format my mac. As I have lost my recovery disk, I cannot use the restore feature which came with it. I have only one partition which is called "Macintosh HD" which has everything in it.
    My question is:
-If I have pre-installed version for the Macbook Pro, should I only use the recovery disk (which I don't have) to format?
-If I don't need the original disk, can I make my own recovery disk with "Mountain Lion"? If that exists, is it safe to do that? Can the software find my original key and etc. when I do it?
-How do I format my mac if I can solve the questions above?
Thank you very much in advance, I appreciate the help.

Take a look at this article on the Recovery HD. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
When you installed Mountain Lion, it installed a Recovery partition on the hard drive. You can't see it normally, but if you hold down cmd-r when you restart, as Chris and Niel suggested, it will boot into that recovery partition. From there you can erase your Macintosh HD volume and reinstall the OS. You'll need to know the AppleID you used to purchase Mountain Lion in order to reinstall.
The bootable clone suggested by Niel is handy to have if anything goes wrong. You'll have something to fall back on while you try to sort out the problems.
You will likely need the replacement disks, as Niel suggested. If you have to install a bare hard drive, you won't be able to install Mountain Lion directly. You'll have to install Snow Leopard first, then upgrade it to Mountain Lion. So, you need the original disks. As also mentioned, all of iLife will be on those disks. The OS does not have iPhoto, iMovie, etc. Those come bundled with a Mac, but are not part of the OS.

  • How do I re-install OSX 10.6

When I bought my iMac I had to install Leopard OSX 10.5.8 due to some compatibility issues with Pro Tools, (software and hardware). Now that those issues have been addressed by Digi Design, I want to switch back to Snow Leopard, which shipped pre-installed in my iMac. I don't recall receiving an installation disc for 10.6, (perhaps I misplaced it). In any event, how do I revert back to the system that was originally installed in my computer? Please don't tell me that I have to purchase a 10.6 disc, because it came pre-installed, which means it came pre-paid.

the 10.6 disk should have been included with the computer. you have likely misplaced it. look for it. if you can't find it call apple and they'll send you a replacement disk for a nominal fee.

  • Help i-web how do i re-install my pages back onto my i-web programe

hi guys a simple stupid question my computer crashed last week and i had to re-install everything
i still have my web pages on back up on my .mac account but how do i get them onto my i-web page to work on my site
    any help
thanks everyone and keep up the good work
    andy

This happened to me as well... Luckily, if its published to your .Mac account, you can go get the actual files and drag and drop, cut and paste until it looks the way you want it to. (make sure to name the pages the same so the links will work.) and then republish.
I now back up my DOMAIN file using BACKUP. I have it place the file on my iDisk and have another copy on a usb keychain drive.
Hopefully if enough people find out the hard way and post on the discussion board, some enterprising lad (or lass) will make an application that will recreate the DOMAIN file; or maybe Apple will work it into the next release of iWeb

  • How to buy and install mac os x 10.6 in a late 2007 mac book with no dvd drive?

i want to buy snow leopard for mac book with no dvd drive, but the only choice in app store is dvd copy, no digital copy!

You'd have to have someone with a DVD drive make a Disk Image of the DVD, have them Restore that .dmg to a Flash drive that's big enough, the boot the MB using alt key to choose to boot from the USB Flash drive.

  • HT1329 How can I get my old music library onto my new computer when my old laptop with all the library is broken?

My old laptop had all my music library on it and I have no back up. I have gotten a new laptop (a PC not MAC) and really need my music onto my iphone, please help!!

Depending on what the problem with the laptop is, you could take the hard drive out of the laptop and put it into an external hard drive caddy (laptops uasally use 2.5" drives). This should allow you to access all the files on the drive however if the hard drive is damaged you will have a harder time recovering the files.

  • Troubleshooting mail 5.0 since installing OSx Lion

    Hi,
We had first snowlepard without troubleshooting and since we installed OSx Lion we got major problems with the sending feature in Mail 5.0 - the system is not connecting to the server when we put mail on sending - almost every time it's ends up with a message where I have to mark which "server" I want to use for sending but I want work out even if I try everything from MobileMe to smtp-address. Sometimes when I restart the computer and delete the account for the mail and set a new up again it can work for a short while.
I would be grateful if someone could respond with ideas how to solve it.
The serienumber is W8848L8M1AQ, version Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
    Best regards
    John M

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I am having a similar issue on my iMac 27" (2011).
Once the computer goes to sleep, Apple TV is unable to wake it up (I do have the "Wake for network access" Energy Saver option turned on).
I have to specifically login and "wake up" the computer before my Apple TV can see it.
Overall, I find Mount Lion to be much more stable and smoother compared to Lion - but this issue is very annoying

  • Wierd behavior on Set Up Assistant the last time I installed OSX...

    Good Evening,
One week ago, I installed OSX (10.6.3) on my MacBook Pro. Installation went normally. Following the intro OSX Welcome video (the one with the word welcome in different languages), as expected, the first dialog screen of the set up assistant comes on (the one that ask on which country you have), as you may remember at the same time that screen appears, the Snow Leopard "Aurora" background appears in a fade in effect. Here's where my question comes, the last time I installed OSX, the "Aurora" background started appearing with the fade in effect transition but it was not smooth. In other words, the background appeared in a "cut" fashion but then continued it's smooth transition.
Should I be worried?, as far as I am using my MacBook Pro it has been working ok.
    Thank You...

  • How may i fill out a form on a scanned form saved in pdf format?

how may i fill out a form on a scanned form saved in pdf format?

With Acrobat you can either add interactive form fields (manually or with the Form Wizard), or you can use the Typewriter tool to add a type of text comment. Exactly how you do either of these depends on which version of Acrobat you're using.
If you only have Reader, there's nothing you can if the document doesn't have interactive form fields or if it hasn't been Reader-enabled to allow use of the typewriter tool or other commenting.

Not unless an Erase & Install is performed.

How is the best way to organize and backup Adobe layered PSD files on iMac desktop OSX maverick?
I lost all my Adobe Photoshop files + everything else on my IMAC when it crashed. They reinstalled Operating System.  But now i must install programs such as MS Word & Adobe indesign suite.
Please help me determine what is the bestway to backup Adobe layered  PSD files? I believe these are my choices to be assured this doesn't ever hapen again. Please comment.
Buy Apple Airport Time capsule $280.  But I am not sure if it can store PSD layers. Can it or do you have to have Apple Apperture  software to act be sure layers are saved
I had had trouble getting Adobe Cloud to sync to save files and so just trusted my computer to not ever crash.  Any hints on this procedure
Are there any hints on PhotoShop image organization for a current IMac usser ?

My backup plan is to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external disk drive plus I also do a clone of my system disk. So far between the bootable clone and the Time Machine backup this plan has covered all of my needs.
