How may I monitor my broadband usage?

Is there Apple approved software that will allow me to monitor my broadband usage?

There is no Apple approved software, but that does not mean Apple do not have anything against doing this either. I have found two easy-to-use applications to do this but both require that you have a broadband router that supports SNMP. Unfortunately many IPS' provide routers with this feature disabled.
See https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/netuse-traffic-monitor/id440301281?mt=12
and http://peakhourapp.com
Both will not only monitor real time usage, but both can also measure usage against monthly data allowances.

How do you find out what apps are running when you're not using the phone?

Settings > General > Background App Refresh allows you to enable/disable Background App Refresh entirely or by app.
Settings > Cellular > Use Cellular Data For allows you to see how much cellular data has been used by apps and by specific system services since you last reset the statistics there.
Also, some carriers (Verizon for one) allow you to set thresholds (e.g., 50%, 75% of data plan reached, etc) where they will automatically warn you re your data usage.

  • How do I monitor my internet usage on firefox 17?

I want to monitor the downstream to my computer cause it's going up suddenly. I tried to use Web Historian but it doesn't work with firefox 5 and up.
    Thanks

Thanks but actually, what i would like to do is search in the history file in FIREFOX 17 to look where the excess downstream is coming from. I didn't change the way i use the internet so i wounder where this data is coming from and for what. With Web Historian from Mandiant, I'm able to read the history.dat file and it shows us where the data is coming from (How much, when, etc.). It doesn't work with FIREFOX 17 so i was wondering if it's possible to do so with another program. The addon that you sent me are not able to do so. Hope you'll have something for me.

If you contact BT they will supply you with this information. I fail to see the logic of removing the ability to get this information yourself and forcing you to waste your and customers services time.

    Regars

You can't in 8i. However you can look at the SQL Text in the SGA looking for anything that matches the table name that the index is for and then look at the explain plan for the selects and updates. Pain in the xxx to do but it should give you the information.

  • Broadband usage meter for BT users

How do I use the broadband usage monitor?
    What information is being displayed?
The monitor is designed to show you all the usage that has been downloaded and uploaded over your broadband connection for the current month. This will help you to see how much of your monthly usage allowance has been used and how much there is remaining. The monitor only includes usage which counts towards your allowance; traffic from services such as BB talk and the BT Vision video store, is discounted from your total.
The monitor also helps you to manage your usage by displaying three different views to indicate the current status your usage:
If the slider is green then, at the last update, you were within your usage allowance.
If the slider is yellow then, at the last update, you were within your monthly usage allowance but there is a chance you might go over before the end of the month.
If the slider is red then, at the last update, you had already gone above your usage allowance and you may be subject to charges as outlined in our Fair Usage Policy.
If you are on an unlimited product then you will never be charged for additional usage. The usage data will be displayed in blue for all customers who have an unlimited monthly usage allowance, subject to the Fair Usage Policy.
If you are finding that your current usage allowance is not meeting your needs, then you might want to consider upgrading to one of our broadband options with a higher usage allowance. To find out more please see; How can I increase my usage allowance?
How do I access the usage monitor?
You can access the usage monitor through your My BT online account at any time. In the product section of My BT there is a 'View my broadband usage' link, click this link to open the usage monitor.
    When is usage information updated?
The usage displayed on the monitor is scheduled to update every 24 hours. To help you keep track of the updates, the time and date of the last update are displayed on the left hand side of the page.
What if I have more than one billing account?
If you have multiple broadband accounts it is important to check that the right account is selected in your My BT page. You can change which account is selected using the drop down list on the homepage.
Troubleshooting - Why isn't the monitor displaying correctly?
If you are having problems accessing the monitor it may be because:
You do not have a My BT account set-up.
The usage monitor is undergoing maintenance. If this happens we will display a service message informing when the monitor will be available again.
The service is busy. In the rare event that this happens a service message will be displayed to inform you. Try again at a later time to access the monitor.
The monitor is not displaying correctly. It may be that you need to adjust your browser settings in order for the monitor to display correctly. Alternatively the device you are using to access the monitor may not be supported. Try accessing the monitor from your PC.
    Summary:
The usage monitor helps you to manage your usage by showing how much of your monthly usage allowance has been used and how much is remaining each month.
The monitor is accessed through the My BT online account. You may need to register for this service.
Usage is updated on the monitor every 24 hours.
It is important to make sure the correct billing account is selected in My BT to ensure the right usage data is displayed. The telephone number of the broadband line is displayed on the monitor.
There may be some occasions when the monitor doesn't display correctly, please see the troubleshooting section to address these.

i just noticed a reply you made to another post..
"suggested keeping a daily figure from the BT online meter, and I was also going to suggest that you perhaps look at the hub stats for up/downloads too."
how do you look at the hub stats? as i would like to know this info. accordibng to bt i've used 52.18gb since 4th november..
    Hi again.
On my hub 2, type A - log into it, typically http://192.168.1.254/ or http://api.home. The Settings (enter your hub password). Advanced settings/Continue to ..... and click the Broadband link. I'm sure there's a simpler way, but that's how I do it (albeit infrequently). You then get a Data transmitted line giving up/downloads.
That figure may well contain things like BTVision access, BBTalk and other items that are not included in the overall usage.
However the hub stats will not be based on the connection time shown above, but possibly on a hub reset. I've not not really checked this, but other folk will know.

  • Broadband usage problem

I have a 5GB/month downloading limit with my ISP Waitrose (UK). This sounds like a reasonable amount but the strange thing is that although I download very little video or audio or do much except normal surfing/emailing, I come colose to the 5GB limit every month. Waitrose usefully have a page where you can monitor your broadband usage by the day or month and it comes to between 4.5 and 4.9 GB every month or about 0.1-0.3GB/day. I have a non-wireless BT Voyager 210 router and Mac OS10.3.9. I could pay more for over 5GB but surely this shouldn't be necessary as I hardly download anything, so what is going on? Have asked Waitrose tech support but they are stumped.
    Thanks,
    Michael

It could easily be just general surfing as 5GB isn't a lot.
Does anyone else use the computer? If so youtube clips, myspace music etc can all add up. I used to have a limit and I have to say it was no fun at all because I couldn't do normal things like watching videos and downloading mp3s that I (or my wife) were used to. If it's just you using it then maybe there is a problem but if it's shared then 5GB isn't very much and I would recommend you to change ISP or upgrade.

I have also experienced the excessive BT broadband usage. I opted for option 1 because I have no interest in downloading Video's/music, apart from reading both BBC and Sky news the only other use is my wife using the online facebook game.
I received an email from BT last month saying i had reached 7GB of my 10 GB usage and just cant figure out why
I have downloaded a usage monitor which greatly differs from BT's own monitor,
What I would like to ask is,  does the monitor I downloaded only monitor what is open on my desktop, 2 whould there be a differnce between High Speed Broadband and those who's broadband is connected via telephone line.
if this is the case as i suspect, then someone downloading a file on high speed whould use less bandwidth than someone downloading on slow speed. look at it as sending a fax, it may cost 10p to send a fax on a cheap machine but to send the same sheet on a quality machine may cost 6p, I dont no?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
You say you received an email last month for reaching 7GB - that was for April.
May I ask what usage monitor you are using, and how does it compare with your current May usage online meter from BT ?
The downloaded monitor will only record what that particular computer is using (won't include other computers, games consoles, mobiles and TVs etc). And then there are various settings in different programs to cater for usage within a home network etc.
What Facebook game is being used may I ask? Some of these applications can use many 100s of MB per day, so this alone could account for a lot of the usage.
There should be no difference between any "high speed" user and standard ADSL in terms of usage. In your example of downloading a file. The high speed (e.g. fibre) user will use exactly the same data content as a person on a slower connection. The speed is irrelevant with regard to how much is being used.
You can't compare with a fax machine, because typically these used normal phone lines which are charged on a timed usage - so the longer the call, the dearer the cost.  In your example it could actually be dearer to use a quality fax machine, because it may take longer to send a higher quality copy.

  • Broadband Usage Monitor always 'Under Maintenance'

    Hi
This is my first post having joined BT Broadband at the beginning of the week.
My problem is that everytime I log in to MyBT and go to check my Broadband Usage I always get a message saying that the monitor is undergoing maintenance.
Is it possible for some at BT to look into this and see if everything has been set up for the usage monitor to work?
    Thanks

    Hi
Tried your link, as well as going throught MyBT again and still getting the Under Maintenance message.
I noticed you mentioned that the usage monitor may not be set up for the MyBT account yet - I don't suppose you know usually how many days it takes from registering with MyBT for the usage monitor to be working?  I know that I registered on Wednesday evening and it took till yesterday (Saturday) for the bills & payments screen to show details (on Wed, Thurs & Friday it kept saying we are unable to show you your bill at this time - if you have just signed up to MyBT then it may take up to 48 hours for you to view your bill).
    Thanks

  • Monthly broadband usage -- BT knows, how do I find...

ok, so I've been forced back to BT's website again. It took 30 seconds for my blood to boil -- why is it such a poor site? The core issue I have is that I always want to communicate with BT via email, NOT via phone. That way I'm on equal terms and I can ponder the response. But finding somewhere to email is extremely difficult -- I always have to complain, when I just want to ask a question.
    Anyway...
I want to know what my broadband usage is. I used to be able to log on and see. But some muppet has decided that I can no longer do this:
"Why can't I check my broadband usage any more?
We don't want our customers wasting time monitoring usage when there's no need to. Having unlimited broadband means you don't need to worry about your internet usage: you won't pay any usage charges no matter how much you use."
Well I DO want to know what my usage is. I am seriously thinking of moving away from BT. If I know what I am using I know what sort of package I can purchase from a competitor. I also don't want to 'renew' a contract so I'm stuck with BT for another 12 months. As long as BT are in the background they are ok. I've had no problem with the service, but they seem to be getting dearer and dearer. (Line rental saver went up by 13.5% -- Inflation was less that 2% so why the huge hike?)
Their scheming, conniving business team who are looking at ways to stop me moving away while still screwing me are finally forcing me to do something.
So can someone please tell me where I can now find my monthly usage? The above response from BT is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
Now to find a cold shower and calm myself down again...
    grrrrr

  • BT Broadband Usage Monitor

I'm trying to keep a daily check on my Broadband usage; reason I overshot my limit last month.
But looking at the BT BBand Monitor it seems that it is not updated consistently.
At times the amount used increases but the dates of usage do not change.
Has anybody else had a problem?
How can BT use this to penalise excess usage if the system is not exact?

OK, thanks, got in using "Admin", & have now changed Password !
Now please what am I looking for & where to give my Broadband usage?
Just looked at the BBand usage in my Account & the date has now updated
I have not used this router but I would expect to find the data usage as follows:
Follow the instructions given in the link I posted earlier as far as step 4 but click on Status instead of System at this point.
This should give a menu item of Broadband Connection (or similar) that should lead to "(a)dsl connection".
Amongst other things this should give Data Transferred (sent/received).
Note these figures and also the Uptime.
The Data Transferred figures will be rest to zero if the Uptime shows that your adsl connection has been reset.
If you do this on at least a daily basis you can check your daily usage by subtracting yesterday's reading from the current reading.  If you are getting strange readings you can check usage in real time by refreshing the window.

  • Broadband Usage Monitor too high

I've seen the other forum posts.  I have a similar issue, but seemingly not as bad.
I switched to BT on 23rd March.  I have been monitoring my broadband useage using your website.  It is clearly wrong.
    1. I am an IT Professional, so I know what I am doing.
    2. I only have 2 computers connected.  Nobody else is connected to my router.  I can confirm this by checking the connected devices
    3. I have downloaded no music, no films, have watched nothing on iplayer or youtube. I have downloaded no emails with large attachments.  I am not using any torrent program.
    4. In the last 8 days, the internet has been used for online gaming and web browsing.  The online gaming has downloaded no patch information.
    5. It says I have used 2.26Gb as of today, which is ridiculous.  Yesterday it said 1.86Gb, which is an increase of 400Mb in a day.
    6. I have been monitoring it on a daily basis, and it shows since yesterday that I have used 400Mb.  I dont know how this is possible, since I have used the computer for about 2 hours in that time, and the router has even been switched off.
    7. Finally, my useage limit shows 2.26Gb used and that I only have 8Gb left until the end of April.  April started today, however, I have already lost 2.26Gb of that limit from stuff that happened before the start of the month.
So, whilst my usage is not as drastically high like other peoples, to have used 2.26Gb in a week of doing hardly anything is very worrying.

Just a quick update.   My router has now been on for 2days and 13 hours.
    Data Transmitted/Received (GB):
    0.1 / 0.9
I have watched the data received go steadily up over the last 2 days, jumping by 0.1Gb at a time.
So, it seems that the website is correct, and showing what my router is showing.
However, there is no way that I have downloaded 900Mb in the last 2.5 days.
    Nobody connected wirelessly
Only 1 computer on at this time
    PC is virus free
    No downloading, no torrents
Only 1 email with an attachment (and that was 23Mb)
    No iplayer
    No youtube
No windows updates at this time
No adobe / other software updates during this time
    Minimal web-browsing
Computer was also switched off for more than 50% of this time.
    BTFon disabled
No other wireless devices (phones and such)
I'm temped to replace the Hub 3 with something else, but the 2 other routers I have in my house. Well, one is about 5 years old and I dont think has usage stats on it.  the other is my sky router, which is fairly newish but I think is locked down so I cant use it.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Hi.
Do you use anything like social networks, facebook for example ? Some of those applications can use many 100s of MB per day.
Do you leave a browser going, say on something like sports auto update pages which will continue to receive (though usually only very small packets of stuff).
Do you have anything else, like auto-check emails every few minutes ? Do you use skype or similar program (e.g. MSN, Yahoo! messenger etc) ?
Have you got a local usage monitor, say something like Networx which will show you "real time" usage and will show the hourly figures as well.
    Sorry for all the questions.

  • Broadband usage monitor is lying...

My parents have been on BT Option 1 broadband (10GB limit) for years and never had any problems.
Yesterday they received a warning email to say they had used 8GB of their allowance, and as of 23:59 the same day the BT Broadband usage monitor claims they have used 75GB!
This is two pensioners with one laptop who get a miserly 2Mb/s download speed... they use the internet for a couple of hours a day at most. To use the amount claimed they would have to be downloading flat-out 24 hours a day for 3.5 days. And of course they are worried sick they are going to get a bill for over 70 quid (if not more) for this month alone for something they cannot understand.
The usage monitor helpfully tells us that their average usage is 2.76GB. Before worrying emails from Libby Barr get sent out encouraging people to pay or upgrade, surely this usage must get flagged as an outlier and something is probably wrong?
Please can somebody help to resolve this issue, and ensure that they do not get billed for this mistake?
