How move Project or Event file to second drive?

Hi, In my Mac Pro 1,1 my internal drive is nearly full with multiple FCP Projects/timelines and Events. I have another internal drive. How do I move some of these Projects and Events to the second drive without losing access to them in FCPX? Thanks! Duncan

Tom, thanks so much.
By the way, I just got your book on Final Cut Pro X from Amazon, and it looks like it will be very helpful. Thanks again, Duncan

  • How do I save my imovie '09 project and events to an external drive? I tried to drag it but it won't accept it?

I've been able to save/move things to my Western Digital Passpor beforet but this time it won't let me drag the project or event to the external drive.
Tons of space left on the drive. The prioject is not finished. Do I have to optimize it or something? Thanks for all replies.

external drives come out-of-the-box 'Windows'/fat32 formatted.
no prob for a Mac - except for iMovie.
use the Disk-Utility in your Apps/Utilities folder to format to 'Mac'.-

  • Saving all projects and events to external hard drive

I finished an iMovie project last night and published it to YouTube.
Then, in order to free up space on my Hard Drive, I moved some of the events to a USB external drive because I figured I was finished with them as far as making my movie was concerned.
My movie got "muted" by YouTube (copyright issue), so I need to go back and edit the project to remove a soundtrack, but the project has lots of yellow warning markers on various clips.
I went to Genius Bar, and he explained that all iMovie events and all iMovie projects must reside in the same place. Makes sense ..... so I bought a new Seagate 7200 rpm Firewire External Drive (which will be faster than my USB drive) and plan to move all events and projects to the Seagate hard drive.
But - if everything is on an external drive, how do I play a movie on my Mac when I want to show somebody? Do I copy the project back to iMovie? But will it play normally if all the accompanying events are stored elsewhere?
The firewire 7200 rpm drives do not come in a portable drive, so I bought a desktop size drive - not very portable ..... so I can't be schlepping that drive every time I want to show a movie! I don't want to open the package if this is not the best solution.
I'm starting to take a lot of video - so it's eating up my hard drive .....
Thanks in advance for your help .... !

you want to hold the command key and drag the project file to hard drive. The hard drive can be even one of the portable my passport. I have several. It just needs to be formatted Macos extended. Once you drag the project it will ask if you want to take the events with you....say yes. Viola ... all movies projects and events stay together. However, if you just want to show the movie after its edited, share to itunes and create a version that can play in itunes.

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • How do I move movie projects and events from Mac to iPad Air?

Oddly, most of the help sources explain the contrary, but I need to move a project from my MacBook Pro to my iPad Air and do some edition on the go. I've tried to export to iTunes having my project opened, but when I connect my iPad, I don't see the file on the iMovie Library inside iTunes, instead, I see it as a home movie, and when I choose to import that movie under home movies tab, I can playback in my iPad in the Movie App, but don't see it inside iMovie nor can import it, (huh)?
Also, I would like to integrate iCloud drive into this complex equation, after I dominate what explained in the previous paragraph, I export the movie projects to Theater, iCloud uploads them, but I can't import on my iPad, iMovie folder on iCloud shows 0 files.
I appreciate any light on this matters, thank you.

    Thank you for your response,
Unfortunately, AirDrop between "older Macs" (mine is early 2011) and lightning conector iDevices doesn't work, possibly due to the lack of low energy bluetooth adapter, so that article you mention it, a bit misleading (because it only mentions Yosemite Macs), does not apply.

  • My start up disk is full but FCX says I 'dont have permission to move projects and events' in order to save space

    Hello,
I' ve been working in FC10 and normally have a folder on my computer which stores my events files, original media etc. automatically.
I've had a warning that FCX can't save data as there is not enough room on the disk. In order to try to rectify this I deleted unused render files and got rid of a few projects.
This didn't help so I thought, okay, Ill move some of the remaining projects onto my external hard drive, that will free up some space. BUT FCX came up with a window which had 'no value' in the drop down section for selecting a destination and then came up with a window stating that I 'did not have permission' to do this.
I'm a bit lost at this point as to know what that means and why its saying that. How else can I make room so that I can save and export my video and have room to make more videos?
    Any advice greatly appreciated!
    Many thanks

  • How to move all FC X files to another drive?

I want to move all my FC X stuff.  Everything currently resides on a Western Digital Firewire 800 eSATA drive.  I'm working on a MacPro tower with 20 GB of RAM and 4 cores.  I'm not overly pleased with the performance when FC X accesses this drive and it gets hot, really hot (burn your hand hot) when backround rendering for large files.  I suspect moving the whole kit and kaboodle to an internal SATA would improve overall performance a bit and I can use smcFanControl to regulate the temperature.
The question:  By doing this will FC X lose all the links to the source files that I've already used in projects?  If so, how do I reconnect media?
I have about two tons of source footage that I imported from cam archives primarily as an excersise when I was first beginning to learn about importing footage in the new app, so much of it is not critical (I can always reimport from the original archives safely held on another drive) however, they've already been analysed and sorted into smart collections at this point and I may want to use some on future projects.  So - should I delete events not used in projects thus far and then properly move the ones that are used in projects via the Move command in the FILE drop down menu or just copy all the files and folders in the FC X folder on the eSATA drive to the internal drive via the finder?  I'm not currently in the middle of any projects.  All have been succesfully completed and rendered out as movies.  The clients are all happy and the most important thing - the checks all cleared, so no worries there.  Benefits? Pitfalls?  Any opinions?  We're talking about 1.5 TB of data here.

I guess the eSATA firewire 800 drive was just not quite fast enough for constant read/write access or maybe it was overheating.  I put all the camera archives over there and everything seems fine now.
Shouldn't be the case, I've cut successfully from a 500gb My Passport Studio HD But keeping in mind I transcode my media.
    WizOfAhhhs wrote:
BTW, the really large events files not referenced in any current projects were able to be moved via the finder much faster than from within FCP X without any noticeable problems.
I always transfer via finder however I try not suggesting that because it's something you have to feel very comfortable with.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.... Happy editing

  • How can I delete event files from iMovie to save disk space?

I have been shooting a lot of HD video of my son's soccer games and am now realizing some of the problems with the newer iMovie 10.   It appears to not allow for partial video deletion of videos in events (really too bad because previous versions of iMovie did this really well),  And, sometimes it will not actually move the deleted file to the Trash to help free up disk space on the computer.  This is also a problem because I have to did around in the View in Finder mode to find the events I just deleted in order to move them to the Trash manually.  Yeegads!  All of this said, what I appear to have happening is a huge amount of video that I never plan to keep (most of a 90 minute soccer game does not make it into highlights -- imagine that?) clogging up my hard drive.  My poor computer needs to have a cholesteral check.
Any advice on how to manage large video files 40 minute HD files within (or outside) of iMovie 10 so that I can efficiently eliminate irrelevant content and actually delete files to prevent disk overload would be greatly appreciated.  I am thinking about using iMovie 9 to edit down and delete the unwanted footage and then update the files into iMovie 10 for some of its bells and whistles any problems with that?
I must admit, I think iMovie 10 is a failure in certain essential ways.  It dropped Keywords, its deletion is not true deletion, and it's all or nothing when deleting an event.  I have always been a huge Apple fan, but this new release of iMovie 10 has not been a good user experience for me. I have read a lot of feedback from others with similar problems and issues with iMovie 10 and would really like to understand what Apple plans to do to address some of these defficiencies in what will hopefully be a much better next version.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi PGWilli,
If you are satisfied with 8.0 then you shouldn't need 4.01 at all. As long as all your bookmarks and personal information are in the newer version, go ahead and remove the older version.

  • How can I relink event files?

I am on the job of 'managing my video works'...trying to get the events and projects in order. In this matter I have been coming across 'problems' which I have been able to surmount. But in the present case I seem to have come to the 'end of the road' and would like to know how to proceed.
The event of one particular problem is showing an alert icon as the one shown in the HELP pages of FCPX:
When I tried to relink the files, I got this pop up stating that files were incompatible and asked to click on a single file to know the reason of incompatiblity:
Upon selecting a single missing file, I found that there was this problem:
The project appears normal in the project library and the timeline as well. The project properties in the inspector window also seem to be normal...no alerts of missing events. Playback also is normal. The project in the project library sports no alert icon. I did a 'relink project files' and was able to do so. When I clicked upon reorganize project media, I was informed that all the media are right on the spot [location].
I finally also clicked reorganize event files and got this feedback:
May I be informed how I can get rid of this alert icon? What are the dangers, if any, if the alert icon cannot be removed? Can I ignore this alert?
    Thanks in advance.

An update for what it is worth!
The alert icon got removed in this fashion:
I had upgraded to version 8 of FCPX recently and instead of updating all the events and projects in a drive at once, I had, as a precautionary measure, used event manager to 'feed' and update with only one project and its associated event/s at a time. When I clicked all the prjects and events of the drive in question, the alert icon disappeared.
However, I am still getting this, what Tom has opined, a display problem, even in some events and not merely projects:
Well, if this is indeed a 'display problem' need I to call up the service center or do I accept it with an air of resignation? FYI this appearance of clips and projects are not for all projects and events I have but only for some of them.

  • Should I keep both Projects and Events in same external drive?

I just updated to 10.1 lastnight and expected to see a few differences with the library system but prior to this version, I was always under the impression that it's better to keep events on one external drive and projects on another which would boost performance. That is how my system is currently setup.
After updating, I had one project being worked (which means one active event folder and one active project folder on both drives). The update modified my projects and events folders as expected, and now I have 2 libraries appearing in FCPX: "Hardrive 1: Updated Projects" and "Harddrive 2: Events".
Problem: The project that appears in the first library has an exclamation sign saying Proxy Files Missing so when I double click it to load into the timeline, the clips don't show.
Confusion: In that same first library that has the project, I also see a few clips from the event that it belongs to, so they all say proxy files missing. The Second Library that's on my Media drive (where I kept my events isolated from before) is showing all the clips that were there from before for that event as it should, so why are there also a fraction of clips inside the First Library where the Project file is? Are clips being duplicated in to where the Project files reside?
SIMPLIFIED QUESTION: Am I now supposed to keep both projects and events on the same single external drive and stop using two separate drives?
Thank you for reading and I appreciate any responses.
    Reynaldo

I was always under the impression that it's better to keep events on one external drive and projects on another which would boost performance.
Unfortunately a surprising number of people have been doing this. It wasn't really any great benefit.
If you saved the original projects and events and the previous version of FCP, who should go back to it and sort out the projects and events. Use the application to move the projects to the drive that holds the corresponding events.  Then update the projects and events in 10.1.
SIMPLIFIED QUESTION: Am I now supposed to keep both projects and events on the same single external drive and stop using two separate drives?
    Absolutely.

  • Transferring projects and events to new external drive

I have been using a 2 TB external hard drive to create both personal and commercial videos using iMovie '11. Due to space limitations on the 2 TB drive, I now want to transfer the commercial video projects and events to a new 1 TB external hard drive. I started by copying one project (and associated events). I then copied a second project that uses clips from the same events as the first project. As a result, I now have two copies of the events--one copy associated with project 1 and a second copy associated with project 2. Consequently, the 1 TB hard drive is filling up fast with twice as many events as I originally had before starting the transfer process. I also have a third related commercial project that I want to transfer to the new drive, but I'm afraid I'm going to fill up the drive sooner than I expected with a third set of events. Ugh!
In effect, I want to move multiple related projects that use clips from the same events from one drive to another without losing associativity and without creating extraneous events. I would appreciate any help.

    Hi
Yes there are somer IMPORTANT steps to take and not to take.
    • DO NOT - Move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on Desktop/Finder.
If You do - iMovie get's confused and it might not allways be repairably.
    • DO
    The external hard disk
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX(DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO !
SHOULD BE - a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly
Moving Events and Projects - ARE DONE in the iMovie Program/Application and in resp. window
Just drag from one hard disk HERE to the other one and new iMovie Proj/Event folders will
be created and iMovie will find them.
AND - answer the choise if You want a full Move or a Copy made.
(Event's window can be changed to view Yearly - or - Yearly per hard disk connected
top right hand corner of window - click small hard disk symbol.)
    Yours Bengt W

  • HT202853 iMovie failing to update older projects and events on external hard drive.

I've made sure my iMovie events and iMovie projects files are on the top level of my external hard drive, however iMovie says, "iMovie could not find any events or project files to update" please help.
I only recently updated my computer to OSX 10.10.1 ; before that, I was using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Not sure if that has any effect on this topic.
    Here are my specs:
Type: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
Pretty sure graphics and serial dont matter so I wont put it in.
But yea, I've been trying to figure out what's going on for a few days and have had no result.
This problem's really hindering my progress for a film I'm making and iMovie is getting more and more frustrating to use as it develops.
I hope somebody be able to help me asap.
    Thanks

If you want to try and start over with the iMovie 10 "Update Projects and Events...", remove the "UpdatedToiMovie10" file in both the iMove Events and iMovie Projects folders (the older folders). Then open iMovie 10 and reselect "Update Projects and Events...". My expectation is that you will experience the same missing events problem I have, caused by changing the clip date and time in the previous version of iMovie (9). It's a bug that persists through iMovie 10.0.8 (just released a few days ago). Really really wish Apple could fix this.
