How much can it hold?

Hello,
I'm new to the movie making stuff and I have a few questions I was hoping I could get some answers to.
My family goes on trips every year and we take about 2 hours of film during a normal trip. I have two questions.
First, would this amount of film from an HDR-FX1 be able to be downloaded onto a normal Mac computer that is capable of handling iLife?
Would I need more than 512mb in order to get the entire 2 hours of film onto the computer so it could be burned onto a DVD?
If you need more info to give a good answer please let me know. Like I said, I'm new at this and want to make sure I get the right equipment from the start without breaking the bank!
Thanks.

Hi Powder,
welcome to this forum
1) yes - whatever you mean by "normal" Mac; I own a 6 year old Cube, HD doesn't work, the actual ones can handle that, but....
2) ... one hour of miniDV (NTSC) has ~13GB! so, usage of a iBook/Powermac/MacBook just with its internal drive is NOT recommeded (if THAT is a normal Mac)
in case, you're filming in HD, the needed amount of free diskspace is higher!
don't forget, your Mac needs another 5Gig free just for being a happy Mac plus 12GB for producing video-dvds with iDVD......
3) RAM is another cup of tea/coffee/beer.... RAM needs your Mac for "just being" and acting "normal"; even when Apple supplies its machines out of the box with such an amount, is is highly recommended to upgrade RAM as much as affordable.- it makes the system and the apps more stable, "snappier".

  • Just how much can iPhoto hold?

    I am extremely snap happy with my digital camera(s) so I am constantly uploading loads of photographs into my iPhoto. I have got somewhere near 10,000 photographs (with the occasional video) in my iPhoto right now. Is this way too much and will i begin to have problems with my iPhoto? Does anyone recommend what I should do

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As Larry suggested make sure you have a backup strategy in place to frequently backup your library and other important files. Since you're running Leopard you can use Time Machine with an external FW hard drive. That works very well.
    Also don't let your iMac hard drive fall below 10 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How much can 16GB of data hold?

    I am looking to at  a new iPhone 6 but don't know how much storage to get. How much can 16 GB of data hold?

    A 16 gig iPhone is going to have around 12 gigs of free space.

  • How much can a 16 gb ipad 2 hold?

    How much can a 16 gb ipad2 hold?

    Your average movie is 2-4 gigs, average song 3-4 megs, average album 30-50 megs. Documents and eBooks are relatively small
    I have 4 movies, a couple of albums, hundreds of documents and some apps and have a couple of gig free.

  • How much can the 16gb ipad3 and the 32gb ipad hold on their storage (apps songs books, etc)

    I am just wondering which is better value for money, and how much different stuff each size Memory can actually hold...

    a 16 gig iPad usually has 14 and change free after the operating system. the 32 gig has 29 gig and change free.
    as to how much it'll hold, it all depends on your file size. Your average movie can be hundreds of megs to 2-4 gig each....and the file size determines how much your device can hold.
    I would say, since memory  isn't upgradable, buy the biggest you can afford. I have a 16 gig and I get by. I have 2 albums, 4 movies, hundreds of documents and a couple dozen apps and I have 1-2 gig free. On the other hand, i have a 32 gig iPod Touch and it has a lot more music and videos on it and I just recently filled it up to having a couple of gig free.
    If you're going to use your device for documents and surfing, go for th 16. But if you plan on movies and music, go for the 32. better to have to work to fill 32 gig than to have to constantly manage content to make the most of your room.

  • How much can you customize Professional level storefronts?

    I know that you need to be an Enterprise user to have completely customized storefronts, but how much can you customize Professional user storefronts? What do they look like? Most magazines I've seen are Enterprise level

    With a Professional account, you cannot customize the storefront. If you create a subscription app, you can specify subscription tiles and indicate with subscription durations are available, but that's about it.

    Hi,
    Are we sure that a voice memo can only be 35 minutes long? I only ask as I'm about to start Uni and was quite keen to use the voice memo feature to record lectures (which are definitely longer than 35mins).
    Just to test (as I've never really used mine before) I might leave mine running tonight and see when it cuts out/stops.
    BTW, what's iTalk....and how do I get it???
    Thanks :o)

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

    How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
    I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

    You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • Kernel Memory limits. How much can it usefully use?

    I just wanted to check something.
    Obviously the Linux kernel can handle a lot of memory, but the question is how much can it usefully use before it needs to be specially compiled?
    I need to build a server to clean email, and because it is very very busy, (well the last one was and so is its stand in) it will need 4GB of RAM as an absolute minimum but I would like to put in 8. If I go for 8, do I need to rebuild the kernel?
    Kind regards
    Benedict White

    If you install Arch64 and use the normal kernel package -- no. You won't touch the RAM limit for some decades to come.

    When attempting to print a 4X6 photo using Elements 12 it prints out 2X3.  Does anyone know how you can get hold of a live person at Adobe?

    I've never done a forum and am not exactly sure what to do from here.   I
    know how to do a screen shot on my phone, but not on my computer.
    I'm about ready to throw every adobe product I have out the window!   If
    you purchase a product you should be able to get support from the  company.

    No one on here can tell you the fare market value of your iPhone...look at the prices being paid on places like eBay or Craigslist to get an idea.

  • How much can I stuff into Vector?

    I am getting an ArrayIndexOutOfBounds exception when I try to add things into a Vector Collection. I don't know exactly how much I got there but I suspect it to be somewhat close to ~100kb. How much do Vectors hold, and if I want to make sure to not get an overflow, which Collection should I use instead?

    It's probably not the memory size. Are you just using the add(Object o) method, or are you using the add(int i, Object o) method? If the latter, you would get that exception if your vector wasn't as big as the index you pass in (that method won't automatically resize the Vector for you). If that's the case, try the add(Object o) method.

  • How much can the 30GB iPod hold?

    Hellow everyone, Happy Holidays! I was just wondering how much the new iPod can hold at once. Yes I know that it can hold 15,000 songs, 25,000 pictures and 150 hours of video, but for the 30GB i was wondering if those numbers are for if you have just songs, pictures, or video, or if you can have those amounts all at once? A reply would be fantabulous. Have a safe holiday everyone.

    I don't know how they measuse photos or videos, but the 15,000 figure for songs will fill the entire iPod, so I figure those numbers are mutually exclusive.
