How much can macbooks take?

Ok. I just installed windows 7 and am very happy with it. but, just wondering, are macbooks themselves made with the ability to game and download big torrent files? I don't wanna wear it down past its ability to function. I am turning into a big gamer. and love to download big torrents. should I look into buying another computer other than mac?

MacBooks-when you install windows, and run the windows side-will do most things that a win-based computer can. I don't recommend gaming on it unless you do some minor modifications to it, such increasing your RAM and possibly your video card. RAM shouldn't matter but seems to help slightly, based on a friend of mine's experiences. (He recommends increasing RAM for just about anything, though.) Be sure (of course) that any gaming ware you have works on the win-side.
Downloading torrents--I don't do it, can't and don't recommend it, and thus can't tell you how that works on a MacBook. I treat that like I do finding music online: If I can't legitimately pay for it, then I'm not interested in it.
And I have a lot of music.

  • How much can it take?

    I just recently purchased my first laptop, a 15" MacBook Pro, and I've fallen completely in love with every aspect of it.
    One thing I'm curious about though: How much physical punishment can a MacBook Pro take?
    Now, I know there are very few laptops that can handle a drop from several feet up, but how does the MBP take to every-day physical punishment? If you bump it on the corner of the desk, if you move it while it is writing to the hard drive or reading from a disc, if you accidentally spill something on the keyboard.
    Can anyone share any experiences with their MBP going under some punishment? I'm curious how it handles it!!

    MTB:
    A good amount. The thing is well-built and made of aluminum. It will take some licks and keep going. There are just two things to be aware of:
    1) If you drop it or bang it into something, there's a good chance you'll dent the case permanently. It's really hard to bend the aluminum back into perfect shape. The good news is, the case doesn't scratch easily!
    2) If you drop it or bang it hard enough, the first thing that will break is your LCD screen. That's very expensive to replace, so do not drop or bang your laptop! If you drop it or bang it while it's running, there's a good chance you'll destroy the hard drive as well.
    I think you'll find that most Mac users on these forums baby their machines. I would do the same if I were you and you'll get years and years of use out of it.

  • How much can it take? MacPro 2008 (3,1) and 3rd party GPUs

    Hi there,
    So, I have been upgrading an old MacPro and wondered how many GPUs it can take?
    So far, I have a 3GB Radeon (Gigabyte) 7950 (NOT Mac edition) installed, and it works flawlessly running Mavericks.
    Two problems, though:
    - this version of the 7950 requires one 6-pin PCI and one 8-pin to run properly.
    - the MacPro 2008 (3,1) however, has only two PCIe thingies coming from the motherboard.
    My question to the community is:
    - can the Motherboard take another 3GB Radeon 7950 with the same configuration without it frying (although I heard that this a bit of a myth, no)?
    - how can you split the cables from two PCIe ports on the Motherboard to have four cable running into the GPUs (i.e. two 6-pins and two 8-pins)? Adapters?
    Thanks so much for your help,
    VN

    @ Hatter
    Thanks again. I actually got the idea of running the 7950 from Barefeats (although he used the Mac Edition). I tried to save some money by only paying 1/3 of the price by buying the "PC" edition.
    @ Grant
    As a professional photographer and a video noob (see username), I'm not used to cutting, editing and then retouching my footage... just yet. My photograper's eye prefers seeing the clip cleaned up, sharpened and rendered before cutting and putting it into place. Hence, having the beachball spin for 5 mins every time I nudge my 45 sec clip is not my idea of workflow, and I know that with the right technology, most of these dilemmas can be reduced. I don't, however, have money to throw around for the occasional video work that I have to deliver. Photoshop CC2014, my main application, still purrs along just fine on my 2010 MacBook Pro.
    In regards to "time and energy": by me putting my questions into bulletpoints, I have just provided the forum users with a shortcut to what is essential. The most time and energy on their side is saved by replying in kind, i.e. in the same format. Any other information sought or provided becomes optional, on both sides, without the superfluous "what in the world would you want with + CAPS, etc." tone that soured a simple question from the get-go. It's not like I'm trying to fit a Porsche engine into a Beetle.
    In regards to "completely unwilling": in the end, I'm just a guy with a camera who tries to keep up with the times and my clients' wishes. My self-deprecating username should have given that away. If I had any superior knowledge about computers, converting, rendering, coding, tweaking and building a computer, I'd be sharing my knowledge here, too.
    Finally, in regards to "I want something back": I have done my fair share of pro bono, educating and reduced pricing over the years, but I don't remember ever complaining about it in the end. Whilst I agree that asking for specifics may produce better answers, I don't agree with your overall mindset. A simple "BTW, what do you plan on doing with more GPU?" would have resulted in a shorter, less defensive reply.
    Thanks to both of you, Grant and The Hatter.

  • How much can HDDs take?

    Hi everyone,
    I recently tried zeroing out an external HDD within Leopard but after waiting for Disk Utility to run its course for approx 11 hours, it ended in an error message. Frustrating but life goes on...
    Following that 1/2 day, I proceeded to rebooting into a back drive running on Tiger and ran Disk Utility once more and after another 11 hours it works.
    The HDD was still a bit warm when I ran it the 2nd time through Tigers Disk Utility. Then I partitioned it into multiple volumes.
    My concerns are:
    1) Can you run a HDD that long without burning it out some how?
    2) I want to transfer some Back up Disk onto it with SuperDuper but now I am wondering if the 2 x 11 hours running time would somehow have burnt it internally or have damaged it?
    Rio

    Depends on the enclosure size and whether it has a fan. I have several notebook drives in metal enclosures that get very hot. Hard drives are designed for continuous use as I said. Manufacturers rate many of their drives to last for 10 to 70 years, although practically they rarely last more than five. The hard drives in my Mac Pro run continuously 24/7.

  • IMac as a server - How much can it take?

    Hello,
    At my school, we have a 20 inch, 2.16 Ghz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5 GB of RAM set up as a server (running OS X 10.4 Server) managing 10 17 inch iMacs and 12 eMacs. We also have a few switches controlling the flow of the network.
    At this time, we are dropping some packets and the server sometimes slows down quite a lot. How many computers can a server like this handle? We're wondering because we may decide to purchase an XServe instead because its technically a proper server and we would like the slowdown to decrease, otherwise it really interferes with peoples work.
    Please leave a response if you know if there needs to be some changes made or if the iMac cannot handle 22 computers.
    Thanks for you help.

    Hi
    How old are the switches? Are they gigabit? What quality of cabling do you have? What sort is it: cat5, cat5E, cat6, mixed? The question about how many computers can your server handle depends a lot on what the server is being asked to do. If you have 22 students all accessing the server continuously for video production then no the server and network would struggle. The same would apply for graphic production to a lesser degree. Especially if the server is providing LDAP Services.
    If all the students are doing are word processsing, e-mailing, internet and printing then the iMac should be more than adequate. The other part of the equation is I/O drive throughout. The iMac has only one drive and on that drive would be the OS as well as everything else. There are things you can do to tweak and finetune AFP that might help server access but I think you should be looking at the physical structure of the network first.
    I’m sure there will be others who have a similar environment to you will offer their opinions and advice.
    Tony

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

    How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
    I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

    You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • How much can you customize Professional level storefronts?

    I know that you need to be an Enterprise user to have completely customized storefronts, but how much can you customize Professional user storefronts? What do they look like? Most magazines I've seen are Enterprise level

    With a Professional account, you cannot customize the storefront. If you create a subscription app, you can specify subscription tiles and indicate with subscription durations are available, but that's about it.

    Hi,
    Are we sure that a voice memo can only be 35 minutes long? I only ask as I'm about to start Uni and was quite keen to use the voice memo feature to record lectures (which are definitely longer than 35mins).
    Just to test (as I've never really used mine before) I might leave mine running tonight and see when it cuts out/stops.
    BTW, what's iTalk....and how do I get it???
    Thanks :o)

    How much can a 16 gb ipad2 hold?

    Your average movie is 2-4 gigs, average song 3-4 megs, average album 30-50 megs. Documents and eBooks are relatively small
    I have 4 movies, a couple of albums, hundreds of documents and some apps and have a couple of gig free.

  • Kernel Memory limits. How much can it usefully use?

    I just wanted to check something.
    Obviously the Linux kernel can handle a lot of memory, but the question is how much can it usefully use before it needs to be specially compiled?
    I need to build a server to clean email, and because it is very very busy, (well the last one was and so is its stand in) it will need 4GB of RAM as an absolute minimum but I would like to put in 8. If I go for 8, do I need to rebuild the kernel?
    Kind regards
    Benedict White

    If you install Arch64 and use the normal kernel package -- no. You won't touch the RAM limit for some decades to come.
