How much disk space to allocate?
Hi,
I just got a NAS that supports Time Machine. It allows me to allocate disk space just for Time Machine.
The NAS has 1.5TB disk. My Macbook Pro has a 300GB disk and currently is about 60% full.
Planning also for the future, how much disk space to you recommend to allocate in the NAS for Time Machine?
Thanks

Most of us don't. Your NAS may claim that it supports TM, but Apple doesn't. TM does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or external drives attached to another Mac running Leopard on the same network. It will back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and requires a running a Terminal command to make it work.
Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless when you need them the most.
If you still think this is a good idea, TM usually requires 2-3 times the space of what it's backing-up to work well. See item #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

How much disk space does a typical system start up disk use?
I am trying to partition a 640 GB hard drive for my 17" MacBook Pro. I created a partition of 30GB for the "System Start Up Disk", and after installing the original Tiger OSX software, and then doing the Leopard Upgrade Install, It says that I am out of disk space on that partition.
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Why do you want to partition that disk?
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
When not booted from that drive (meaning, I believe, that it's not allocating swap or page space) my OS X 10.5 system uses 68.4 GB, including 10 GB for applications, 2.5 GB for the Developer folder, and 25.5 GB for user folders. -

How much disk space is needed to run Boot Camp using Windows XP?

But you can't install XP if you have a new Mac.
Try running XP in a VM or aquire Windows 7 which is the only one supported now.
And you will need more like 60GB for Windows 7, so I would skip on 20GB just to be safe.
20G is a fine minimum for XP, I was not responding to any inquiry about Win 7. -

How much disk space is needed for scratch files?
I hope I am allowed one dumb question. If so, I would like to know how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files, if my MTS file is 16GB? I am using Premiere Pro CS5 on a PC with Windows 7 Pro-64 bit.
how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files
All of it. Put them on a large disk (500GB or more) and just let PP take care of the rest. -
How can I find out how much disk space I have free?
I want to download a large file from the internet (22.21 GB). I have deleted everything on my computer that I don't think is necessary to keep, but how do I find out exactly how much disk space my computer has free so I can download?
Hello again Rolanda,
Barry is right on the money here ( Hello Barry! )
You need to delete / remove some files off that computer as soon as possible. Start with things you never use. Then onto things that can easily be replaced.
I would not even attempt to copy to CD's until you have at least 5 or 6 GB free!
Post back if you need more.

I Have Logic 9. How much disk space will LP X add?
Hi,
just curious... I have LP 9 on my computer, and my disk is getting, well, fuller (250G or so left). How much disk space will be taken if install LP X next to LP 9? Am I correct that LP X will re-use the old libraries and just adds new content to it? Just curious how much my HD will shrink...
For the time being, I want to keep LP9 alongside LP X for old projects with 32 bit plugins.
Thnx, JaapWell... I took the plunge... it seems that the additional content is around 20...25 GB.
When I first installed LP X and opened one of my LP 9 projects, the instruments sounded like toy instruments. LP X obviously didn't "know" yet that the HQ samples were already on my harddisk. After I started downloading the additional content LP X apparantly checked what it needed, and suddenly my old projects sounded fine.

How much disk space does Mac OS 10.9.2 take?
5.3 gb if you are upgrading from a lower version of OS X. If you already have 10.9 and update to 10.9.2 it is about 900 mb.

Hi all
RT OS (Desktop) has a problem: If disk is full RT OS won't start.
So I have to limit the amount of file output of my RT application to a reasonable value.
To do this I read free disk space at start of my application (using GetFreeDiskSpaceEx), so I can enshure that MY apllication will not write more data than available space (e.g. by deleting old data).
But I don't know how much disk space the operating system will need while running.
Can anybody tell me a value to calculate with?
Many thanks in advance!

Solved!
Go to Solution.A general rule of thumb is that the OS needs roughly 25MB of storage for temporary files, .ini files, persistent storage, and the like. Don't suck your usage below 25MB and you should be able to minimize your surprises.
NOTE: This number was obtained empirically via not-so-stringent testing. Your mileage may vary.

How much disk space do i need for Windows
Okay looking to partition my hard drive to install Windows 7 using boot Camp, my question is this;
How much hard drive space to I allocate for Windows?
I only need to instal 2 programs to use with windows, I am thinking of doing 100 GB, that will leave me 831 GB for the imac.
thanksHi,
100GB sounds like a good choice.
For Windows 7 alone usually about 40GB are recommended. Plus the amount of disk space for the programs and files you use in Windows.

How much disk space will I need in bootcamp for PC games
Hi, I have installed bootcamp and windows but when I went to use steam on it I coudlnt download anything because i have barely any disk space. I believe this has something to do with the partioning thing. So I need to know how much I roughly need for PC games like I will be buying Elder Scrolls Skyrim when it comes out. And games on steam PLEASE HELP. Oh and BTW im using a 21.5 imac with not upgrades or changes since I bought it.
That depens on a couple of things - how many audio tracks do you have, and what audio quality are you using.
As a rule of thumb: An audio track at 16 bits takes up around 10 megabytes per minute, at 24 bits you need 15 megabytes per minute. So for 10 minutes that makes 100 and 150 MB, respectively. -
How to find out how much disk space left on hard drive OS 10.7.5?
Yes, this probably seems like a dumb question; however, after I installed OS 10.7.5, I noticed that the little bar at the bottom of each window which revealed available disk space has disappeared. How do I get it back? How do I find out how much space left on my internal hard drive?
