I have a friend with a 13 inch, 2008, apple macbook pro. somehow her screen was cracked a few months back. her birthday is coming up and I'd like to get it fixed for her if I can afford it. If I take it up to apple.. how much would it cost to her cracked screen replaced?

They don't have anyway of just replacing the screen?? its a small crack. On google they have places where you can buy just the screen and youtube has tutorials of how to do it yourself.. I can't believe that apple doesn't offer SOMETHING. because I could try to do it for under $100.. but I'd rather have apple to it.

Why not call the Apple Store and ask them? Only they can tell you. After all, there is labor charges and taxes to take into consideration. No one here would know that information since this is an international message board of users like yourself.

So some idiot decided to wreck a couple of keys off my macbook and brake the plastic on the back of the keys... and then decided to try and superglue it back on and whilst in the process managed to get a bit of glue in the top right section of the trackpad. Then went on to try and loosen it etc and in doing so managed to slightly crack that area on the upper right of the trackpad. My hard drive failed today:( Already called AppleCare and he diagnosed the problem but I don't have AppleCare so I'll have to pay for it.
How much does it cost to have Apple replace it? It's a 320GB HD on my 13" MacBook Pro.

I was quoted $600 a few years ago to replace a 350GB with a 500GB and it was a poor Seagate issue at 5,400 RPM.
So it did it myself for $300 and got a higher quality 500GB Hitachi drive (before WD bought them) at 7,200 RPM, so my old machine is still fast.
I recommend a 7,200 RPM 500 or 750GB drive, even a 1TB will future proof you well. The added speed gives added performance for a slight drop in battery life perhaps.
A SSD in 480GB size is about $1200-$1500 or so, even $1800 for the new screamers, that's just for the drive, not including Apple's mark up.. Not worth it IMO.
Throw some more RAM in it while you got the opportunity I think you machine can handle 8GB , use the free MacTracker to find out,, you might be able to stick more in there than Apple says.
Apple quoted me $435 plus tax to upgrade my 4GB to 8GB,( it's only $200 something if you do it with a new machine as they keep the new 4GB RAM.) The same 8GB RAM can be had at Crucial.com for $70.
So it certainly pays to do it yourself, Apple clearly doesn't want your business.
Doing it yourself doesn't void your AppleCare or warranty as long as you don't break anything.
You have 10.7, so your machine had 10.6 before, you need to format the drive HFS+ with a GUID then install 10.6, then to 10.6.8, then AppStore option click on Purchases and install Lion again, then all your third party programs from fresh sources and files manually from backup. (no migration assistant if you can help it) In that order for best performance.
If you have a factory Lion Mac or not 10.6 disks, then you need a copy of yours or anothers Recovery Partition using this on 1GB+ USB formatted GUID OS X extended journaled, hold option boot from it to install Lion. You will need your Apple ID to download Lion I think.

There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". It is also possible to purchase parts and find instructions on doing a repair yourself, though it's not particularly easy. Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPod serviced by an unauthorized shop or perform a repair yourself, all further support from Apple will be void.
I'd suggest you just get a case or skin to hide the scratches. Either will be much less expensive.
