You were told wrong. Apple considers the hard drive and RAM to be user-replaceable parts. If they didn't, they wouldn't provide instructions for changing them yourself.
What type of HDD would you reccomend me purchasing? Looking to get something 750GB+
I favor Seagate. Others have different preferences. Avoid so-called "green" drives.

    Why not call the Apple Store and ask them?  Only they can tell you.  After all, there is labor charges and taxes to take into consideration.  No one here would know that information since this is an international message board of users like yourself.

    So they didn't give you an Estimate for the replacement when you had it checked out? If not take it back and get an Estimate on the cost of the replacement. That is what it will cost.
