How much does mobile e-mail actually cost me per month?

Hi,
I have a Pantech hotshot that I purchased in November 2011. I want to know how much Mobile e-mail will cost me per month, and how much data I will be getting for the same.
I ask because there are so many confusing claims on how much this costs in several places on the Internet.

PS: My device says the following when I press the Mobile Email icon:
Monthly subscription charges: If you have a $9.99 por higher priced data plan (recommended), Mobile Email is INCLUDED, simply select BUY to continue.
If you do not have a data package, you may TRY out Mobile e-mail for 10 uses (opening the application 10 times). After your trial has ended, you will need to subscribe to Mobile Email to use the application.
You will not be charged the $5.00 monthly subscription fee until you subscribe
[So far, so good, but read the following confusion:].
Data charges apply when using the application even in trial mode.
So, is using the mobile email feature in trial mode costs me money anyway, why the heck call it a trial mode? Is there something in this language that I am missing? How do I parse this? That I will be charged $5.00 per month plus for the data? Which, BTW, I have no idea how much it costs.
