How much drive space for FCS 2

How big is FCS 2 and can it be installed on a external hard drive instead of on the computer?

11GB media for LiveType
9Gb media for DVDSP
8GB media for Motion
4GB media for FCS tutorials
There are also many GB's of audio for Soundtrack Pro, but I don't remember how much and it's hard for me to figure out at this stage. I suspect about 15GB comes on the installs.
If you're trying to figure out how large an external to install all this on, I would consider anything > 60GB just fine.

  • How much drive space it utilized straight out of the box of a 15" MB Pro?

I'm looking to get a MB Pro w/ Retina, but struggling with paying $500 to go from 256GB of on board storage to 512GB.  I realize its specially designed for the system and all that, but it still seems a bit bloated as far as price.  So in order to make a more informed decision I was wondering how much of the 256GB storage is utilized by the base image from Apple, like I open the box turn it on and check the drive properties how much free space is left before I make any changes/additions to the system?  I saw that OS X Mountain Lion only requires 8GB of storage space and coming from the Windows world I'm not sure how accurate that is.  All I need on board storage for is my software apps (Lightroom, PS Elements) and a bit of temporary storage for photos until I can transfer them to the NAS at home.  I would need about 100-150GB of available storage typically to be safe for a trip/session.
So any insight to exactly how much disk (I know its not a disk) is left available straight out of the box would be greatly appreciated.  Oh and I'm in Afghanistan right now otherwise I'd just go to the Apple Store and check for myself.  Looking forward to coming over to the Apple world, but hoping I can do it for $500 less.

Aw, man, you'd love some of the stuff you can do with the CS6 suites! I use Lightroom as well, but also PS, InDesign, Illustrator, and I'm just beginning to learn Dreamweaver and Fireworks. I love layers in PS - allows for so much control and creativity!
You'll have plenty of room - glad to see that you've already thought ahead in re storage and backup. I just think that the price Apple charges for SSD is absurd. 256GB will be something that you can live with for a long, long time.
Good luck with your new Mac,

  • How much disk space for RT OS

    Hi all
RT OS (Desktop) has a problem: If disk is full RT OS won't start.
So I have to limit the amount of file output of my RT application to a reasonable value.
To do this I read free disk space at start of my application (using GetFreeDiskSpaceEx), so I can enshure that MY apllication will not write more data than available space (e.g. by deleting old data).
But I don't know how much disk space the operating system will need while running.
Can anybody tell me a value to calculate with?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Solved!

A general rule of thumb is that the OS needs roughly 25MB of storage for temporary files, .ini files, persistent storage, and the like.  Don't suck your usage below 25MB and you should be able to minimize your surprises.
NOTE:  This number was obtained empirically via not-so-stringent testing.  Your mileage may vary.

  • How much HD space for Local Time Machine?

    Hi and thanks for reading..
I am noticing that since i have instlled Lion, if I cancel a file (even big) and empty the trash, the free space in my HD does not decrease.
May be it is due to the local time machine backup?
I have tried to connect the external time machine backup but after the time machine backup I have no improvement in the internal HD...
    Any suggestion?
I am also wondering how much HD space is dedicated to the local Time Machine Backups.
    Thanks, bye

I believe this will answer your questions.

  • How much drive space is enough?

A recent, now closed topic at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=434397 raises questions about OS X drive space use & how much should remain free for proper operation of the OS.
Many seem to have some opinion on this, but nobody seems to agree on the appropriate rule of thumb. Apple doesn't seem to offer much in the way of user friendly official guidelines, so I'm hoping this topic will inspire a more comprehensive discussion of the issues involved, or at least where to look for better answers.

To sort of add to Gulliver's information some related ideas:
    1. OS X adds VM typically in 64 MB chunks if you're using Tiger. Panther and earlier versions added VM in chunks of 128 MBs. That means that as more VM is required you need sufficient disk space to eventually accomodate at least twice the amount of installed RAM in the most extreme situation. Hardly ever going to happen, but at least it represents a practical limit.
    2. Software installers require from 2-3 times as much disk space during installation as the size of the installed item.
    3. Temporary files, logs, cache files, etc. require varying amounts of disk space both for the active files as well as for archives. Yesterday, for example, I cleaned off all my user and font caches - nearly 100 MBs.
    4. Applications create preference files and/or store data files in the Applications Support folders.
    5. If you allow your free space to drop under 1 GB there is a growing risk of permanent disk corruption that will be caused if the operating system requires additional directory extents. Directory extents are allocated in 4 MB chunks and the chunk must be contiguous. If the OS is unable to allocate a contiguous 4 MB chunk for the disk directory, then the entire directory will become corrupted potentially causing a catastrophic loss of data. Despite self-defragmentation, some disk fragmentation will always exist, and as the free space on the hard drive declines so declines the liklihood of finding a contiguous chunk large enough to accomodate the directory expansion if it's needed.
All of this leads to a conclusion that there is no specific amount of free space you should maintain, but there are some practical constraints that are dependent partly on what you as a user do. To accomodate a wide range of users I recommend a minimum of 5-6 GBs or 15 percent of the hard drive's capacity whichever is larger.

  • How much harddrive space for XP SP2?

I am using Boot Camp to install Windows XP SP2 in the FAT32 format. I need this to run Microsoft Office 2007 and some other Windows programs (no games). Does the hardrive partition need to be divisible into 32 for FAT32 (i.e. 8GB, 16GB, etc) or does it not matter? I am thinking about 10 or 12GB for the partition. Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks

10 or 12 would be fine. There is no magic in multiples of 8 in this case.

  • How much HD space should I partician for Windows XP?

I am upgrading to a new (2010) iMac i5 with 1 TB HD and I was wondering how much disc space I should make for Windows XP? I only have a couple of special apps that I use in Windows and the attending files do not take up much space so other than the OS I may not need too much, but would appreciate a little starting point. Thanks.

I got this mixed up with my Shakespearean readings. I should be partition. I hit the key before reading.

  • How can I see how much free space is on my drive?

i want to unlock iphone, for this how much disk space is needed for backup and restore activiti

OK... now subtract the music. That's not part of the iPhone backup. Neither are apps, but in app data is.
Why are you asking? Did you get an error?  If so, then clear out some disk space.

  • How much free space is necessary on the hard drive?

although the message 'Startup disk is almost full' is coming up, what is the amount of free space required to run 10.4 normally?

    773/3219
    Hi Brian,
This is not an exact, immutable value, but it is usually understood that Mac OS X needs about 10% to 15% free hard drive space.
Now you most probably can count a minimum of 5 GB, in order to run the (about) 4 GB system (Tiger), regardless of the total size of the HD.
    Another useful info:
Depending on your habits and on what you do with your computer, look at the fluctuations of the VM size number in Activity Monitor. It shows quite accurately how much free space the OS needs to "breathe" well.
    In a word: 10-15%.

    about 8 - 10 % of the client size

Depends on how fast your system and your harddisks are.

  • How much disk space is needed for scratch files?

I hope I am allowed one dumb question.  If so, I would like to know how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files, if my MTS file is 16GB?  I am using Premiere Pro CS5 on a PC with Windows 7 Pro-64 bit.

how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files
All of it.  Put them on a large disk (500GB or more) and just let PP take care of the rest.

  • How much disk space does a typical system start up disk use?

I am trying to partition a 640 GB hard drive for my 17" MacBook Pro. I created a partition of 30GB for the "System Start Up Disk", and after installing the original Tiger OSX software, and then doing the Leopard Upgrade Install, It says that I am out of disk space on that partition.
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
How about disk space for Applications?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Why do you want to partition that disk?
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
When not booted from that drive (meaning, I believe, that it's not allocating swap or page space) my OS X 10.5 system uses 68.4 GB, including 10 GB for applications, 2.5 GB for the Developer folder, and 25.5 GB for user folders.
