How much easier will OS X Server make my working life?

Hi folks, thanks for taking the time to read...
I'm involved in a business exporting kitchen appliances from the UK. We have a small number of staff operating in a number of locations - frequently travelling to our export location.
I have been considering setting up a server at home, but whilst I'm very competent in using OS X, Windows and general networking, I have never really tried to do anything more complicated. Firstly, am I going to be in for a nasty surprise?!
My main intention for the server is to host LightSpeed point of sale system - allowing me to monitor and administrate the stock and sales in our overseas warehouse. The client system would be in the warehouse many miles away, and staff there would log into my home server to register new goods arriving and process sales. Similarly, I could also process sales at my end.
I would also like to use the server as a backup solution for all the staff's computer data - including my large music collection. Can I assume that this will be an automatic benefit of the server, with the home directories automatically synced?
My main question is the cost-effectiveness of the whole thing... Do I go to a server hosting company (such as iweb-hosting.co.uk), do I use an existing Mac Mini with additional storage attached via firewire, do I go for a Mac Pro, or the Xserve!?
I get the impression that the Xserve has high additional costs, such as rack mounting etc... so I'd love to just use a Mac Pro which is of course very expandable. Are there any downsides to non-server hardware running the OS X Server operating system?
Input would be greatly appreciated! All comments/questions welcomed.
Thanks folks

I view LOM and remote console access as essential for any system less than immediately accessible. And for co-lo or computer (server) room environments, the Xserve design (and LOM) would be (is) my choice.
But beyond rack-space and mounting -- and the costs of same -- and the remote diagnostics and sensors and remote console -- yes, Mac Pro can be a very reasonable Mac-based server.
The calculation I'd use would involve the cost of the Mac Pro with the 10-client versus the cost of the Xserve, factoring in the co-lo rack-space prices for the 1U or 4U (including RAID) versus the Mac Pro (12U?) costs. Add in the costs of the network connection; part of the co-lo, or separately for non-col-lo.
756 Kb is a fairly common DSL up-link speed. 768 Kb up also is what your customers get in their downward direction. Peak.
Recognize that some ISPs will restrict servers and server functions within their network environment, either through contractual limits, or through technical limits and blocks, or (often) both. Inbound port 80/http might be blocked, and port 25/smtp can often be blocked out-bound. ISPs can provide business-class services that do offer unblocked port access, static IP and related services, and there's always T1/E1 (c. 1.54 Mb) or better. Local T1/E1 monthly prices tend to enforce the upper-bound on entry-level co-lo prices.
And if you're not accustomed to running a server, yes, a consultant might well help get this set up and running for you, and should also get the gear secured against attack. (My last set of freshly-connected boxes were probed and were then attacked within four hours of initial IP connection, sans any announcements anywhere.) Backups and other such also factor into the initial configuration.
If you're seeking a "target practice" box here, then yes, most certainly, a Mac Pro would make a fine local test platform for learning about servers and such.
Leopard discussions are premature, beyond what [Apple has posted|http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard>.
Regardless, the choices and trade-offs and the ultimate decision are going to be yours.

    kiyoungtack1,
You have asked a great question! It is your choice how you would like to go about purchasing the iPhone. Do you currently have an iPhone? If so you can trade in your current iPhone and put it towards the purchase of the new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus at full retail pricing. http://bit.ly/GGnDDC Have you checked to see if you are eligible for Early Edge? If you would like us to investigate further into which option would be the most cost efficient to you please private message me so we can review further.

  • How much ram will fit in a T41

    Hi Folks,
How much ram will fit in a T41.  I have two 512M sticks but would like to replace with two 2G.  Will that work?
    Thanks

"Properly set" is mostly a software issue in my book: make sure that you remove all the unwanted bloat from the OS that you're running...
Now, only you know what applications you need or not, but I'll tell you how I have my daughter's T41 (2373-4GU) set up, just as an idea:
    a) XP Pro runs in the "classic" mode, with all the "eye candy" disabled .
    b) AVG Free AntiVirus has replaced Norton
    c) Automatic updates have been disabled. I choose which ones to install, and when.
    d) I have installed "SpeedSwitch XP" application to optimize CPU speeds depending on the load.
Once again, my word is not from any type of holy book...
On the hardware side, this machine is stock apart from being upgraded to 1Gb RAM and 60Gb/7200rpm HDD. It will never run Vista properly, and it won't ever handle serious games, but will do most anything else that an average user requires IMO.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    George

how much charge will be ask me

How much charge for what ? As I replied in one of your other threads there is no charge for downloading or using iTunes, you will only be charged for what you then buy from the store - and each item in the store should have its price listed with it (some apps allow you to make in-app purchases within them, and some allow you to take out subscriptions e.g. magazines)

  • How much time will take applyning SP11 level in ECC6.0

    Hi,
How much time will take for appying SP11 level in ECC6.0.
    Regards,

    hi,
Make sure , that you increase the shared memory being utilized by database .
In oracle we increase the SHARED POOLSIZE , that will reduce the time in ACT_700 .
There is note which talks about the SHARED_POOL_SIZE , it should be minimum 500 mb , depending upon your total physical RAM and CPU.
    Thanks

  • How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?

Had since May/June last year i5 13" and only since I applied all updates few weeks ago it seems to be louder than it was before?
It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?
    None.
The machine should only make noise if the Superdrive is being used or the CPU's heavily used, going by my Early 2011 17".

It's possible it wasn't installed correctly and/or the case is slightly off so it's resonating the hard drive vibrations.
Make sure you have a internet connection (don't move) and reboot the machine holding the d key down like forever and Hardware Test will run.
Backup your data off the machine, if the hard drive dies under 1 year or three years with Applecare, then go get a new one. else you can replace it yourself with a better one and not void your warranty if you don't break anything doing so. Add more RAM while your at it.

As you know Mac's are made by hand by young Chinese women working 12 hour shifts performing the same function every 7 seconds for only $1.20 a hour. They live 7 to a box room and have to pay 70¢ a meal.
All in all I would say they are very tired, and it's possilbe a few defects made it to your machine.

my iphone cannot open itself. they told that their is a problem on my power IC. where can i go to repair and replace the parts and how much it will coast? please help me. im in the philippines

If the device is still under warranty, take it back to Apple or whomever provides support in your country.
If it's not under warranty, take it wherever you like.  Apple does not sell parts nor do they repair devices.  They will offer an out of warranty replacement which is a complete, refurbished iPhone for the Out of Warranty replacement cost.

  • How much money will I really spend on a $12.99 album pre-order?

I just barely put money on my account and now that I look back, with tax I am afraid I will not have enough money on my itunes account to get the album. I know this is a stupid question, but about how much money will be spent on the album once it comes? And what happens if I don't have enough itunes money? That sales tax in my area is 4.70%

  • My ipad1 had a gray are across the middle of the screen. How do I get an estimate of how much it will cost to repair it. If I can't where can I send this so it will be recycled responsibly?

I have an iPad 1. I have a gray bar across the middle of the iPad. I have heard this  is a common problem among the first generation iPads. How to I get an estimate on how much it will cost to get fixed, and if that is not possible, where to send this (and my broken iPods) so they can be recycled responsibly?

If you head over to ifixit.com, you can check out their replacement guides for each of the items you feel needs replacing. The cost for the parts is listed there. It would be that cost + labor at an Apple store. I'm not sure if they would replace things that are cracked as that is cosmetic damage and doesn't affect how well (or poorly) the computer works. You would have to bring it to a store and ask.

I'm assuming you can..now I don't know the prices for your area, you'll have to check around, I just did a quick web search and I'm pulling all sorts of prices up, I'd look into a repair facility near you and see what they can do for you :-) shouldn't be too expensive though! Good luck!

The fix was to completely remove all Apple Software following guides in previous posts.
Then download and re-install latest iTunes 64-bit, making sure to Run As Administrator.
This fixed it. Now the next thing seems to be that as I move from one device to another to close and restart iTunes between each one. Treat it gently. It seems to break easily and a lot.

Let it do the rotating thing for about 10-15 min. If it is still doing this, try wiping the phone in iTunes.
