How much extra disk space should I have?

Hello! So lately I have been having some disk space issues! I was wondering how many extra MB I should have free on my macbook that is 1 GB i believe! Thank you!

Hi katiebee993: Me again, we communicated earlier this week about some issues you were having. I've attached an article that hopefully will aid in the understanding of the difference between Disk space and RAM (Memory). If it generates more questions please check back.
http://www.content4reprint.com/computers/memory-and-disk-space-whats-the-differe nce.htm
As a general rule, you need approximately 10 - 15% of the hard drive free. Depending the size of the hard drive in your computer this could be anywhere from 8 - 25gB. For instance my MacBook Pro has a relatively small hard drive of 80gb. I have approx. 25gB free.
Hope this helps

  • How much hard disk space remains?

Sorry, the Missing Manuel for Lion isn't available until the end of the month, but I have a lot of basic questions.
With Snow Leopard when i opened a Finder window at the very bottom of the window pain was information on how much memmory was being used by whichever folder I had opened.  I know I can hit Tab to have a window pop up and tell me, but I liked that old feature built into the Window.  Is there a way to change the setting back so that when I open a finder window I get a reading on how much hard disk space is being used by X file?

Select Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu. As far as space used by any one file that is listed under the Size column in the Finder when using List View.

  • How much external disk space is needed for editing HD video?

    If I'm using FCE:
    1) How much external disk space is needed for editing HD video:
if I downloaded 150mins of HD video? and
do editing with it which will have an output of 120mins.
Now PC, going to a MAC user soon   Windows XP

    Hi(bonjour)!
As a rule of thumb for HDV editing, use those numbers:
    12 to 15 meg/second for capturing ( your project is 150 minutes long, so 780 meg/minute, or 117 to 125 Gig).
If you do any editing, add transition, video effect, add 12 to 15 meg /second to the total.
As your project will have to be rendered for the print to tape operation, calculate 12 to 15 meg/second for all the length of your final movie. Add this amount to the total. (example: a 60 minutes movie : 49 Gig).
If you want to burn a DVD on your Mac, calculate 3 to 4 meg/second for downconversion to DV material if you check "self-contained" in quicktime export dialog. (example: your finished project is 60 minutes long : 10.8 Gig)
iDVD itself needs 3 to 4 times this amount if you want flawless operation.
Finally, if you use your internal hard disk for all this storage (it's not a good idea to capture on the same drive where Mac OS X belongs), your Mac OS needs some spare room to breath (doing caching, etc), and your hard drive must have a least 25% of free space to avoid file's fragmentation.
As hard drive's price drop, get the maximum size you can afford. 250 Gig is a good choice if you want to do just one project of 90 to 150 minutes at the time.

  • How much Minimum Disk Space is Required for Time Machine?

Are there any recommendations from Apple for the size of external hard drive for Time Machine?
Also, is there any formula for the amount of hard drive space = how any days, months, or years of backup available?
Sorry about the poorly worded question.

    Size of HD = IBS + [30*DCD + 487*DCD]NM
    or
    Size of HD = IBS + 365NMDCD
    where
IBS = Initial Backup Size (GBs)
NM = Number of Months wanted before HD fills
DCD = Daily Churn Data in GBs
    So lets say
    IBS=160 GB
NM=24 (2 years wanted before having to worry about disk full)
DCD=0.05 GB of daily churned data on average (50 MB of changed and new data)
    Size of HD = 160 + 365240.05 = 598 GB
If you wanted just NM = 12 then the HD size should be around 350 to 400 GB
Much depends on how many months you want to go before being bothered with disk full and how much average daily data churn you have.
Note that TM will make much effort to clean up old data that can be safely deleted before giving up when disk becomes full. It will also provide you with the opportunity to clean up old backups yourself to free up space.
Of course you can always re-format the TM backup HD and start over again but you obviously lose your TM backup history. You can also to decide you can delete the oldest 6 months of data and keep the more recent history to continue on with thr freed up disk space.

  • How do I see how much free disk space I have?

I just upgraded my OS from Snow Lepeord to Mountain Lion. When I had the finder window open, it always told me at the bottom how many files and how much disk space was being used in that folder. Additionally, it told me how much free space I had on my hard drive. After the upgrade, it no longer does that. Did Apple get rid of this or is there an option I need to turn on? I looked around and couldn't find i

Well, you should see something like this:
If you don't then try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If this doesn't work then reinstall:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I've just upgraded to Lion and finder no longer shows how much free disk space I have left

Hi I've just upgraded to Lion and when im now in finder i can no longer see how much free or used hard disk space i have. anyone know how to turn this back on?

    Hi Alan,
I think you are looking for this:
From the Finder, select View > Show Status Bar and like magic, your info is revealed like how it was with snow leopard at the bottom of the finder window.
If you have the finder window at the bottom of your screen then it might be below the screen, just move the window up. That happened for me when I revealed it.
    Hope this helps.

  • How much free disk space is it desireable to have

My wife uses a MacBook Pro with a paltry 350 gig HD, and is in constant danger of running out of disk space.  Ove the last day we have seen free HD space drop from 7gig to 1 meg for no particular reason (she wasn't doing much of anything), and then shoot back up to 5.86 gig.
What might be causing this, and what kind of HD free space buffer should we maintain?

Prior to Mavericks, RAM would run out and the system would use the "swap file" as "virtual memory", but that is on the disk.
Formulas of "% of disk free" vary be responder, but start right now with 20 GB free to give the system breathing space.
And while I do not want to be an alarmist ... do it fast.  Sometimes systems that are short of free space refuse to boot the OS.  The hardware is fine, but there is no "play space" for the OS.

  • How much free disk space after setup

I am just about to purchase a macbook and I am trying to find out how much disk space I can expect to have free.
I was thinking of getting the 80gb model but I also have a 40gb ipod which is two thirds full.
How much free space can I expect or should I go for the 120gb HD model?

To give you an indication, my System and Library folders add up to around 12GB and my Applications folder is around 10GB.
While these aren't small they are rather typical as it includes the standard Mac OS X installation, full iLife 06, Adobe CS2, Microsoft Office v.X, Macromedia Studio MX plus a few other things. So you can realistically count on anything from 20 to 30GB for the OS and software. Yes you can obviously get less than that by optimising your installations. From there it's just how much data you have and what sort of data you use.
For most average users 60GB is plenty. If you do anything with video, have a large music library (mine is 10GB) and play games then obviously these will afftect your drive choice.
If price is not an issue then go for a 120GB drive, Apple or 3rd party. For cost effectiveness the best choice is an Apple upgrade to 80GB.

  • How do I tell how much hard disk space an archive will take up?

Hi we are trying to determine whether or not we have the capacity to run an archive export on one of our WebCenter spaces content folder (the root folder and ALL contents). Before we begin we'd like to be able to tell how much disk space it will take up.
    Thanks,
    S

The table Documents contains a field called dFileSize, which contains the size of file in bytes.
Now, you can use this field to calculate the size of all files contained in a folder (or its subfolders), or contained in an archiving batch.
I think easier is the former. Actually, I have done something similar - created a component that checks so that files in a folder do not exceed the given quota. It already contains hierarchical queries that could be re-designed (simplified) to your needs. For instance, an occupied quota of a folder is
WITH tree AS (select dCollectionId, case when level>1 then dCollectionQuota end as effective_quota from collections start with dCollectionId = ? connect by dParentCollectionId = prior dCollectionId and (prior dCollectionQuota IS NULL or level = 2)) SELECT SUM(NVL(t.effective_quota, NVL(docs.dFileSize, 0))) as TOTALDOCUMENTSIZE from tree t LEFT OUTER JOIN DOCMETA meta ON t.dCollectionId = meta.xCollectionId and t.effective_quota IS NULL LEFT OUTER JOIN DOCUMENTS docs ON meta.dId = docs.dId and docs.dIsPrimary = 1 LEFT OUTER JOIN REVISIONS rev ON rev.dId = docs.dId(in your case, you don't need t.effective_quota, nor logic bound to dCollectionQuota as these values do not exist in your system)
P.S. more info about hierarchical queries, see here

  • How much free disc space should be on a new MBP?

On my brand new MBP, my first mistake was I did not immediately time machine the new mac or record the "available" disc size in it when it first came out of the box.
My next mistake was I ran migration assistant twice, and it failed with unspecified errors both times.
Now when I go to Apple->AboutThisMac->Storage, it reports OTHER as 121.48 GB, and Audio/Apps/Movies/Photos/Backups together are several dozen GB in total. So OTHER is taking up most of the used disc space right now.
Disc utility says the HD has used 151GB total, with 348.1 GB available.
Capacity of the disc size is 499.1GB
I have not yet put any data on this MBP, unless the migration utility did it without me knowing it and didn't delete it when it failed.
    What exactly is OTHER data?
How can I find out if my failed migration attempts has put 100GB or thereabouts on this machine that I can safely delete?
How much disc space is USED right out of the box on this MBP (2014 13" retina, 500gig drive)?
    Thanks!!!!

Here is a definition of OTHER:  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202867
Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show all of you files and the respective sizes.  this should permit you to see exactly what you have on your MBP.
I would estimate that the OSX and the initial applications should take about 20 GB space or less.
    Ciao.
