How much hard drive do I need on the Macbook Pro?

I am buying a Macbook Pro 13" to use for email, internet, word processing and photo editing (in raw and jpeg).  It comes wtih 500 or 750 GB Seriesl ATA hard drive which is way more hard drive than I need.  I will keep most of my photos on an external hard drive and in a cloud and retain about a thousand photos on the Macbook's hard drive at a time for viewing and processing.  I would like to upgrad to the Solid State hard drive but want to choose the least amount of hard drive that would be sufficient for the applications I would like to run and the realtively small amount of photos I want to store on the Macbook Pro.  Do you think this would be sufficient?  Is the solid state hard drive so much better than the serieal ata hard drive that it would be a good investment?

The downside of moving a lot of your storage to an external hard drive is that then you need a second external hard drive on which to back the first one up, and you need to remember to actually DO the backups regularly. I greatly prefer to have a large enough internal drive to store all my files, just because it makes backing them all up so much easier (and therefore more likely to be done often).
As for the downside of SSDs, do they need any more downside than costing several times more per GB of storage than hard drives? Particularly when they're still in their early childhood, are still improving by leaps and bounds, and better SSDs will probably cost half or less than half as much per GB a year from now as they do today? There's more than enough downside to discourage me from buying an SSD now. Thanks, but I'll wait for prices to come down, sizes to increase, the limited-write-cycles problem to be addressed on Macs, and SSDs' long-term reliability to be more definitively confirmed. And frankly, I just don't care whether a file takes half a second or three seconds to open. I can afford to wait 20 or 30 seconds a day.

  • Upgrade from Panther to Leopard - how much hard drive GB is needed?

Even though the system requirements on Apple say 9GB is needed, I hear that I really should have more than that and should get a larger hard drive. Has anyone had experience with this? I currently have 11 GB.
In terms of getting a larger hard drive, what is the difference between an external hard drive versus an internal one? Should I get 80 GB or more? Does it replace my current 74.4 GB one or does it add to it? What would work best with Leopard and my PowerBook G4?

    Hi again Camille,
Your 74GB is really an 80GB, because manufacturers use a 1000 scale instead of 1024. Thus, you need a 100 or larger. Per other thread, I'd recommend larger. One can never have too much storage capacity, and files keep getting larger and larger, especially if you work with video data.
If you get an external, that means you'd have to haul it around with you, limiting the portability of your PB, but that is an option. I have a 500GB with several partitions sitting next to my PB which I usually leave connected and use for backups.

  • What type of internal Hard Drive do I need for 2015 Macbook Pro 13"

I want to replace the 256 GB hard drive that came with my 2015 MBP w/ Retina with something much larger like a 1 TB hard drive. Is there a specific type of hard drive I need?
Solid State Hard drives seem to be a ton of money for a 1 TB Drive. is there anything in the 100-300$ range that will have more gigs of space and be an improvement to the hard drive currently in the 2015 Macbook Pro w/ Retina?
Would something like this be an option?

I really don't know anything about this stuff so any feedback would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

Your computer has a soldered-to-the-board proprietary SSD, not a HDD. It is not replaceable. You can purchase an external drive for your computer if you need additional storage space.
Update your records.  None of the retina MBPs have soldered in SSDs.  One fastener holds them in place.
    Ciao.

  • How can i tell how much hard drive space my website is taking up on my computer?

I have a website that i build through iweb and publish via mobile me.  i have about 200 podcasts on the site, and I am trying to figure out how much hard drive space this is taking up on my computer.  these files are not in itunes, and i'm not concerned about the space they are taking up in my cloud, i just want to know how much space on my computer they are taking up because i'm trying to decide if i should move my iweb site to a different computer to alleviate some space issues.  any help would be much appreciated.

Check the size of the Domain.site2 file that is in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  it contains all of the files used to create and publish your site.  I'm not sure if it copies the podcasts into it or not. You can open the domain package and do a search for them. Just don't move, rename or delete any files inside that package or your site is toast.

Select the drive and choose Get Info from the File menu, or open any folder on it and choose Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu if it isn't already displayed.

Hello! Single click on your hard drive icon to select it and then under the file menu in the finder choose "get info" and then information will be displayed. Or if you're using a two button mouse do a right click on the HD icon and choose "get info". Tom
