How much HD space for Local Time Machine?

Hi and thanks for reading..
I am noticing that since i have instlled Lion, if I cancel a file (even big) and empty the trash, the free space in my HD does not decrease.
May be it is due to the local time machine backup?
I have tried to connect the external time machine backup but after the time machine backup I have no improvement in the internal HD...
Any suggestion?
I am also wondering how much HD space is dedicated to the local Time Machine Backups.
Thanks, bye

I believe this will answer your questions.

  • How to limit space used by Time Machine

Many folks in these lists have asked if they can stop Time Machine using all the space on a partition, so they can put other data there too. I grew a partition to make more space and found Time Machine would not use it. This is because it initially creates a Sparse Image with a size set to what is available at the time. Even though the Sparse Image does not occupy all that space until needed, it will not grow past that maximum. In theory it should be possible to fiddle with hdiutil [http://developer.apple.com/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/hdiuti l.1.html], but that is risky since it is not clear how finiky Time Machine is over this. It does seem to 'fail safe' - that is if anything has been tampered with, it is inclined to refuse to proceed. So try the following:
    1) Create a filler file on your volume to occupy the space you do not want Time Machine to use. A (non-Sparse) disk image will do nicely. Check that only the desired Time Machine space is showing as free.
    2) Connect to the volume from the machine you wish to back up via a network connection and start making a back up. Time Machine will create its sparse image, hopefully with a maximum size of the space that was available.
    3) For speed, if you can connect directly to the volume, stop the backup and connect directly via USB/Firewire and complete the initial backup faster that way. (You need to select the backup disk again.)
    4) Delete the filler to release the space you want to use for other things.
I haven't followed this exactly myself, but I am pretty sure it will work.

Sorry about my loose terminology - yes I did mean a sparse bundle. Yes if the backup is created on a local disk, it uses ordinary folders. If it is first created over a network, then it creates a sparse bundle. having created the sparse bundle, you can then connect the disk directly for speeding up the initial backup or a major restore, but also connect remotely for routine incremental backups or minor restores.
It sounds like the type of sparse bundle created may depend on circumstances. In my case I am backing up from a laptop onto a partition on my desktop machine running Leopard 10.5.2 and when I grew the partition, although the Time Machine preference pane saw the extra space, when it came to a backup I got an error message saying there was not enough space and reporting the original size. Deleting and starting over again fixed this.
It is possible that in other circumstances a disk attached to a Time Capsule or elsewhere might get a sparse bundle with different parameters.
Incidentally, I tried copying my old backup sparse bundle onto another drive, deleting it and letting Time Machine create a new sparse bundle on my grown partition and copying the contents from the old one into the new one. Time Machine refused to work with it, so I lost my old backups.
What we need is a Time Machine Utility to manipulate these files, copy them, move backups from direct folders to sparse bundles etc. Ideally Apple would produce this, but I would be willing to pay a shareware fee for that.

  • How much disk space for RT OS

    Hi all
RT OS (Desktop) has a problem: If disk is full RT OS won't start.
So I have to limit the amount of file output of my RT application to a reasonable value.
To do this I read free disk space at start of my application (using GetFreeDiskSpaceEx), so I can enshure that MY apllication will not write more data than available space (e.g. by deleting old data).
But I don't know how much disk space the operating system will need while running.
Can anybody tell me a value to calculate with?
    Many thanks in advance!

A general rule of thumb is that the OS needs roughly 25MB of storage for temporary files, .ini files, persistent storage, and the like.  Don't suck your usage below 25MB and you should be able to minimize your surprises.
NOTE:  This number was obtained empirically via not-so-stringent testing.  Your mileage may vary.

  • Time Machine backup size almost 1T for two months worth of archives. How to minimise space consumed by Time Machine short of starting over?

I have an MBA mid-2012 wtih only 250GB of internal SSD space. I have run my back up since last year, but have subsequently removed my older back ups through Time Machine. I now have only two entries one day each for December of 2012 and January this year. The backup space consumed seems to have grown to 900GB. My external drive is 2TB large, but it seems that the Time Machine back up space has grown over large.
How can I trim it to size short of starting from scratch? I actually don't have problems starting my backup over, but if a more elegant solution is available then I am all ears (or eyes in case of the internet and my screen).

Thank you for the link. It helped immensely. Attached is a screenie of my disk usage. So I didn't realise earlier that my virtual machines (save for Boot Camp) could be eating up a sizeable chunk of the back up space. I think I'll do a complete redo of my Time Machine back up, I keep a copy of each VM I use as a pseudo snapshot anyway. I've added a number of exclusions too, since I only really use several folders in my home directory as temp (e.g. watching a movie I copy it to my Videos folder so I so I can disconnect my external HDD).

  • My iPhoto Library was deleted from my computer, not enough space for a time machine back up?

My entire iPhoto Library is gone, inaccessible, doesn't show up in finder. I tried to restore my last Time Machine back up but it says that I don't have enough space on my startup disk. In order to create space I deleted everything nonessential and moved all of my essential folders such as documents, photos, videos, everything, etc. to my external drive, then deleted them from my hard drive. I emptied the trash to make sure that everything was wiped. I tried to do the Time Machine back up of my iPhoto Library again and is still says I don't have enough space. I looked at my storage under About this Mac, and it says that 120.35 GB of my current computer storage are photos, however, I don't have ANY photos on my hard drive at all. I don't know what to do because I can't delete applications and there is literally nothing else I can delete from my computer, so I don't understand how 135 GBs of storage is being used up.
Any ideas? Could there be somewhere my photos are hiding? I just don't understand how this makes any sense, or why my library got deleted in the first place for that matter.

  • How much drive space for FCS 2

How big is FCS 2 and can it be installed on a external hard drive instead of on the computer?

    11GB media for LiveType
    9Gb media for DVDSP
    8GB media for Motion
    4GB media for FCS tutorials
There are also many GB's of audio for Soundtrack Pro, but I don't remember how much and it's hard for me to figure out at this stage. I suspect about 15GB comes on the installs.
If you're trying to figure out how large an external to install all this on, I would consider anything > 60GB just fine.

  • How much harddrive space for XP SP2?

I am using Boot Camp to install Windows XP SP2 in the FAT32 format. I need this to run Microsoft Office 2007 and some other Windows programs (no games). Does the hardrive partition need to be divisible into 32 for FAT32 (i.e. 8GB, 16GB, etc) or does it not matter? I am thinking about 10 or 12GB for the partition. Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks

10 or 12 would be fine. There is no magic in multiples of 8 in this case.

  • 45 minutes into editing, CS3 crashes every time...how much free space does it require to run?

I have noted the error, but cannot contact Adobe with question. How much free space does it need to run efficiently? This happens every time I try to edit and is costing me so much time, it is not worth using this product. Help...

    Hi,
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing this problem. First, I would need to know what kind of computer you use. You should usually alllocate at least 30% of storage for photoshop files, rendering etc.
Also, it is important to know if you have a computer that is capable of handling large files(as they will need a competent video card processor, RAM and processor speed).
Does the problem usually happen for large files or only one?
Let me know if you find this information useful,
    Vicente.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • How much HD space should I partician for Windows XP?

I am upgrading to a new (2010) iMac i5 with 1 TB HD and I was wondering how much disc space I should make for Windows XP? I only have a couple of special apps that I use in Windows and the attending files do not take up much space so other than the OS I may not need too much, but would appreciate a little starting point. Thanks.

I got this mixed up with my Shakespearean readings. I should be partition. I hit the key before reading.

  • HT3275 I've 1.85TB empty space on my time Machine, but it only backs up to the beginning of the previous month. it should have weekly back-ups for every month before that. Any ideas why it deletes stuff older than a month?

I've 1.85TB empty space on my Time Machine, but it only retains back-ups to the beginning of the previous month. I should be able to access weekly back-ups for every month before that until the disk is full. Any ideas why it deletes stuff older than a month?
    Thanks, Rigby.

If you are using Ethernet to connect your Mac to the Time Capsule, are you allowing at least 2-3 minutes for Time Machine to fully load when you open the application to see your backups?
If you are using wireless to connect, you may need to allow 8-10 minutes or longer for everything to fully load, depending on the speed of your wireless connection.
If you see only white time "bars" on the timeline at the right of the screen, you are seeing temporary backups. Permanent backups are displayed with purple "bars".

  • How can create room in icloud for the time machine on the mac

I don't like to be carrying a time capsule around. Just need some space in the icloud for the Time Machine. Is that too hard to do?

    vcngu wrote:
Backing up a Macpro in icloud shouldn't be rocket science or is it?
No, it is very simple really, iCloud does not back up from Time Machine, or any other OSX program come to that. iCloud IS NOT an OSX backup system.
