How much HD space should I partician for Windows XP?

I am upgrading to a new (2010) iMac i5 with 1 TB HD and I was wondering how much disc space I should make for Windows XP? I only have a couple of special apps that I use in Windows and the attending files do not take up much space so other than the OS I may not need too much, but would appreciate a little starting point. Thanks.

I got this mixed up with my Shakespearean readings. I should be partition. I hit the key before reading.

  • How much disk space do i need for Windows

    Okay looking to partition my hard drive to install Windows 7 using boot Camp, my question is this;
How much hard drive space to I allocate for Windows?
I only need to instal 2 programs to use with windows, I am thinking of doing 100 GB, that will leave me 831 GB for the imac.
    thanks

    Hi,
100GB sounds like a good choice.
For Windows 7 alone usually about 40GB are recommended. Plus the amount of disk space for the programs and files you use in Windows.

  • How much RAM & CPU should I allocate for Windows 7 Ultimate?

I am in the process of setting up my new 27" iMac i7. I'm brand new to Apple computers so this is a learning curve for me! I have installed Parallels Desktop 5 so I can run Windows 7 side by side with Snow Leopard. Now I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate but I don't know how much RAM and CPU to allocate to my virtual machine. Has anyone done this and can anyone help? I have 8 gb RAM and 1 tb Hard Drive.
    Thank you for your help!

    Hello SwissCanuck,
Just FYI, with regard to 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7:
You will not be able to "upgrade" from a 32-bit version of Windows 7 to 64-bit -- the architecture between the two is too drastically different to allow such a change. To learn more about the differences between a 32-bit operating system and 64-bit please go to the following link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequ ently-asked-questions
Additionally, check out the requirements here for Windows 7:
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it requires:
    •1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
•1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
•16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
•DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Obviously covered as per your hardware. Essentially, it is always better if you run Windows 7 as a "Native OS" you can do this with boot camp from Apple. Typically, the performance is not as fast in virtual environments

  • How much partition space should I have for the windows side?

I need to set up a partition to run windows on my mac.  what is the minimum space I should use for the partition so that windows doesn't get bogged down?

After you install and Windows downloads all the updates - that can amount to a year of updates since even SP1 came out, more if original Windows 7.
Those updates need room to unzip, write the installer cache, update files.  And even with 12GB of free space is a tight fit.
And that is on top of everything else mentioned.

Or you can download OmniDiskSweeper (free). It will list your disc usage in order of size and you can follow the paths to find individual files or applications.

  • How much space should I allocate for Windows?

I have decided to install Windows 7 onto my computer. My only use for the Windows partition would be for gaming, e.g. Battlefield , some 007 games, Wings of Prey, etc......
Otherwise, I don't think I will use Windows for much else.
I may use an External hard rive, but having some of the games on the internal hardrive could be helpful.
    I'm Downloading a copy of Windows 7, 64-bit.
    Thank you for your time

You should make the Windows partition at least 50GB for Windows. I don't know what programs or what data you will have. So add enough space for your programs, updates, patches, and data to 50GB and you will be safe. I have 200GB but 120GB may be enough for you.

  • How much HD space do I need for TM?

    Good afternoon,
I have a new 500 GB Hard Drive coming in today and want to know how much of this drive should be partitioned for TM?
I have a 1st Gen. MacBook with 80GB internal HD. There is approx. 15 GB of free space on my internal drive.
I ask because I would like to use a portion of the new drive for overflow music, video, and photo storage. The 120 GB External drive I was using for TM and Overflow stopped backing up with TM quickly because it "ran out of space".
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Your question should be answered by the first item in this post:

When you partition that drive, be sure to select a partition map scheme of "GUID" and a format of "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • How much HDD space should Leopard consume on an "erase and install" install

I installed Leopard into my 17 In MacBook Pro and the 92 Gig HDD is now half full and I only have about 14 gig of music on the HDD.
I would figure the OS take about 14 to 18 gig max, so my question is, did the installed keep the old stuff and if so how do I reclaim the HDD space back.
Hope someone and point me in te right direction
    Thanks
    Newport Tom

If you did an Erase and Install then nothing should be on the drive except what you installed. You might try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • How much HDD space should a typical Leopard install take

My Mini is a week old so not much extra stuff on it yet. The drive is the 120GB size and disc utility says 52 GB is available. Does this sound right. When I look at each folder on the drive the biggest is Users at 16GB while Apps, Lib and Sys are around 5GB.
I did install then remove Parallels for some problems that app gave me. Thanks

15-20 Gig would be fairly typical by the time the running system has generated virtual memory files, a sleep file, tmp files, and assorted cache files.
It is possible that Parallels has left behind a container file of considerable size.

  • How Much Harddrive space should your computer library folder

My library folder on my imac 80 gig is 12 gbs, i had my friends who also have macs check theirs, they were about an average of a gig. I also have alot my programs like finalcut, photoshop.garageband, soundtrack, i rarly use them so should my folder be that big and what danger would i be facing if i delet some of it, i kno its probly not good but yah im not sure

You might want to find your Caches folder and poke about in there to see if there's one taking up a lot of space. Be careful what you remove from there as some cache files may contain information you'd like to keep (like iChat pictures).

  • I'm trying to purchase shogun 2 but it won't let me because I don't have enough disk space, I managed to free 33Gbs but still nothing, how much free space do I need for that?

It doesn't even let me download Empire Total war which is 13gb

First, the App Store will not allow a download that, when expanded, would leave less than the minimum amount of available space on the startup volume that Apple considers necessary, which is about 9 GB. The download is a compressed archive that will usually expand to about twice its size. Both the archive and the expanded files will be present at the same time, so the actual amount of space needed is about three times the size of the archive.
If you're trying to add a large amount of data all at once, and you get an alert of insufficient space, then from the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then back ON and close the preference pane. Restart the computer. Test.
