How can I use a foreign SIM in a Japanese Apple store bought iPhone 4s?

Recently I bought an iPhone 4S from the Apple Store in Ginza (I have just moved to Japan) and took it with me on holiday to Australia. Not wanting to pay extortionate roaming charges I bought myself an Australian Alstra SIM and put it in my phone. My phone kept saying that the SIM was invalid. We checked that it was fine in other phones and came to the conclusion that for some reason my phone would not take it. The Apple store in Sydney then told me that my phone was locked, I told them that this should not be possible as l had bought the phone from the Apple Store. They said there was nothing they could do.
I am very angry because it looks like I have been sold something that I do not now own. Is it possible to get iPhones in Japan that will support other networks (ie have I been sold a dud) or, if not, can they be unlocked (I'm going to be going to the uk soon and will again want to put a local SIM in)?

I paid full price for an Apple Store phone (there was no indication about locking at the time and I didn't ask as I bought it without contract and from the store so just assumed. Although I did wonder why it was that you couldn't buy them online), must be about 3 months ago now. I then later signed up to a data contract with SoftBank.
It would seem (from other sources too) that all Japanese phones in Japan are locked to Japanese networks and that this is currently a requirement to do with managing phone usage. So I can (again apparently) use any Japanese SIM in my phone but no other! I will have to see what I can do about getting the phone unlocked...

If you have a tool, try removing the battery cover and chech out. Some times the camera pin may have been misplaced. If so, you can fix it yourself.

I'm based in Singapore and Apple has replaced my screen assembly twice, FOC, under APP - in the process of it all there were no less than 5 rejects, as a result of dead pixels and an airport antenna that wouldn't work.
That pretty much tells you about the quality of these 'Made in China' assemblies.
A replacement will set you back by approximately SGD1000.00 including labour. Now go figure that amount where you are based - I reckon it should be about USD500-USD600.

However, all PowerBooks are considered obsolete by Apple meaning they no longer provide service for them in Apple facilities. You will need to find a relable independent service firm. I browsed the iFix web site. Nowhere does it specifically state they are an AASP and usually places that are will make that immediately obvious. Their FAQ mostly mentions how to set up a franchise and does not state that repairs made by them will not void any Apple warranty. Apple is very particular about anybody working on their devices and if they detect somebody else has worked on a device (even if they do a good job) they could refuse to even look at a device again (warranty or not) in their shop. I'm not passing judgement on other companies, I'm just observing this so the OP knows in advance.

The underlined clause could be interpreted by Apple to be any sign of anybody else having worked on a device. This isn't just Apple. If somebody is going to warranty a service then they want to make sure they are not also covering anything that might have been caused by somebody else working on the device previously.
