How much memory can Premiere Pro use on a new Mac Pro?

I'm ready to upgrade memory on my Mac Pro Late 2013 6-core.  Does PP CC 2014 have a limit on how much RAM it can use?  Some apps never use more than a certain amount, so I don't want to buy a lot of memory if PP will never put it to work.  (I made that mistake when I was an FCP user.)  Is there a limit and if so, what?
Also, are there any Mac Pro users who have an opinion on optimum RAM?  I currently have 16GB (4x4GB) with 10GB reserved for PP.  I am in the middle of a very large project and have noticed some irregularities and spinning balls.  I assume that they are from memory shortage since quitting all other apps and restarting PP seems to fix the issue.

Not a Mac expert here ... but I do know there's folks running 64G ram and so going up from 16 will work fine. Now ... as to which is the "choke-point" ... that's a bit more techie than I can answer off the bat.
The Adobe video apps can put a pretty good strain on all of the computer's hardware, and "balancing" the assets of the hardware to the usage patterns of the software is always the trick. Memory never hurts ... but if the spinning ball is a video-ram problem, changing mobo ram isn't going to do much. The various areas they go into great detail on within the pages of the "Tweakers Page" (found within these forums threads, check the hardware forum) are of course, mobo, chip/s & cores, ram, disc in-outs & arrays/layout of project/footage & program files, video card & ram.
Your problem might be best solved by more RAM; it might be that it's a disc read/write issue and either more internal or eSATA II discs to spread read/write processes over would be best ... or taking an array of discs and using a fast multi-disk RAID array to speed things up even faster, or a video card upgrade.
So ... where you might want to go is the the Hardware Forum and give your computers complete specs, including disc layout and usage, and see what folks there think needs tweaking.

  • How much memory can Audition make use of

I am considering a new computer. If Audition 3.0 will make use of ram in excess of 2 MB I will put it in. However, the "system requirements" gives only the minimum and does not suggest optimum. Many programs will not address ram in excess of 2 MB.
    Does any one know?

Yeah, what Runaway said. That's what I believe anyway, based on my own occasionally painful experience running Au3 on P4 1.7 Ghz with 2 GIGs of RAM. Things start to stutter and crap out when I get over twenty tracks running in Multitrack with realtime EQ running on everything and ESPECIALLY compression running on only a few tracks.
My next purchase is going to be a new computer, dual core with tons of speed and real estate.

Mac book pro 2.4 GHz late 2011 i7....How much memory can I install? Currently have 4Gb but want to run Win 7 on VMware and want to make sure my user has enough

The position of Apple is that the Late 2011 can take 8 GB, however, OWC, http://www.macsales.com and Crucial, http://www.crucial.com both guarantee their 16 GB ram packages to work.  Both are sellers of high quality ram that is guaranteed to work in Macs.

I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.

(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB)

Assuming it's a 27" 2012 machine, it will accomodate up to 32GB. I'd strongly recommend reputable vendors such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.
If you bought a 21.5" iMac the RAM is not upgradeable. The 21.5" machines will accomodate up to 16GB from Apple however you have to order the machine with 16GB directly. OWC does provide RAM upgrade kits for the 2012 210.5" iMacs however it is MAJOR surgergy and is full of risks including fatally damaging the machine and invalidating the warranty.

  • How much memory are actually being used? db_32k_cache_size

    Hi everyone,
Using Oracle 10g on RHEL 5.3.
I've been asked to check how much memory are actually being used by our db cache's. Currently we are using the parameters db_32k_cache_size (user-defined) and db_8k_cache_size (default) both allocated with 12gb. Now I want to know if there is any way to find out how much of the 12gb are actually being used by the cache.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Thanks Guys,
Okay, so it is using the whole 12gb. I guess the next question would be, is 12gb really needed? You see, we are trying to increase memory where possible as this database has performance issues. Now we are thinking of taking some of the 12gb that is allocated to the 32k cache and assign it to the sga for instance.
    Does this make any sense?
    Regards

  • Premiere Pro CC and the New Mac Pro (2014)

I'm expecting delivery soon of a new Mac Pro, nicely loaded, which I purchased mainly because of all the work I do with video. Yet, I read in a review that Adobe Premiere Pro isn't optimized to take advantage of the new Mac Pro, won't run faster, and I'm better off using Apple's Final Cut.
    1. Is this true?; and
    2. If so, will Premiere Pro be updated any time soon to run best on a 2014 Mac Pro?
My new Mac Pro will have the following configuration:
    3.5GHz 6-core with 12MB of L3 cache
    32GB (4x8GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC
    1TB PCIe-based flash storage
Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each

My main problem is that when i export using gpu open gl it crashes hard boot the mac pro. A 3 min timeline with 4k footage n a bunch of color grading.  I get lucky if the timeline is shorter. But i think it is a gpu issue n my mac must be fixed. Currently under apple tech support. N my case is unique. No one has had the same issue and that makes it harder for me to figure the isse and to apple figure the issue.
If i export using software only mercury then the export goes smoothe no mattrr how long. But that defeata the point of owning a mac pro with 2 GPUs

I have had my 12 core 2014 Mac Pro for a couple of weeks now, and I'm not very impressed with Premiere CC performance with 4K R3D on a 1920 x 1080 timeline.
I understand that there may be an update soon that will take adantage of the CPU's and GPU's when it comes to the complex task of de-bayering the R3D footage, but it's just not there now.
I get similar playback performance to what I experienced on my 09 Mac Pro tower.
Any insights on getting better playback performance in this scenario would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • What should I format my wd external hard drive to to use with my new Mac Pro?

What format should my wd external hard drive be in order to use with my new Mac Pro?

If you're going to use it only with Macs, use Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's the fastest filesystem to use on Macs.
If you're going to use it with PCs and Macs, use exFAT or FAT. I recommend exFAT because it hasn't got limitations as FAT and it's faster, but you need Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later to use it on PCs

    Hey,
    I have a MacBook.
Processor 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
and I am wondering how much memory I can put in the thing.
By day my wife uses it for work and pictures and stuff and by night I use it for DJing so I need AS MUCH space as possible.
    Thank you for your time!!

Up to 6gb although 4gb would be cheaper http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook/White/2.13GHz

  • How much RAM can PS CS4e use in Mac OS 10.5.x?

I've tried to track this down from a number of places, but can't get an answer. I'm assuming the same as CS3e, which is a little over 3 GB.
I'm getting ready to build a new MacPro and I need to decide how much RAM to add initially. I'm a Mac tech, so pretty good at building kick-but systems, but I don't have CS4e yet, so can't figure this one out for myself. I usually max out my systems, but I don't think I can really utilize a full 32 GB of RAM with CS4 suite, but perhaps CS5. No sense in getting more RAM at this point in time, when I could use those dollars for good glass to take more pictures with! ;-)
And FYI, real PS performance comes from using 10K rpm drives for startup/apps and a second one for Scratch.

    Jerry,
That's a very important Tech Note. Thank you for pointing it out.
    EXCERPT:
    Allocating Memory with 64-bit Processors
Photoshop can directly access 3.5 GB of RAM when run on Mac OS (10.4.11 or later). If you have additional RAM on your computer, the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of these extra 2 GB of RAM, the RAM cache can increase performance of Photoshop.
When you run Photoshop CS4 on a 64-bit operating system Photoshop can access up to 8 GB of RAM. You can see the actual amount of RAM Photoshop can use in the Let Photoshop Use number when you set the Let Photoshop Use slider in the Performance preference to 100%. The RAM above the 100% used by Photoshop, which is from approximately 3 GB to 3.7 GB, can be used directly by Photoshop plug-ins (some plug-ins need large chunks of contiguous RAM), filters, and actions. If you have more than 4 GB (to 8 GB), the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of that extra RAM, the RAM cache can increase performance of Photoshop.

  • How much memory sql server is using

    Hi Experts,
I want to  know how much of RAM is currently used by sql server.
is there a query for the same?
we are using sql server 2008 R2 SP2 on windows server 2008 R2 with a RAM of 48 GB. min memory as 40, max memory as 43GB.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi Shanky
Thanks for the info. Perhaps you can clarify something for me on it.
If I run this on one of my production servers:
    SELECT object_name, cntr_value MemoryUsageKB, cntr_value/1024 MemoryUsageMB,cntr_value/1024/1024 MemoryUsageGB
    FROM sys.dm_os_performance_counters
    WHERE counter_name = 'Total Server Memory (KB)';
    select physical_memory_in_use_kb,
    (physical_memory_in_use_kb/1024) as Phy_mem_MB,
    (virtual_address_space_committed_kb/1024) as Total_mem_MB--memory pagefile+physical memory
    from sys.dm_os_process_memory
    I get this:
    object_name
    MemoryUsageKB
    MemoryUsageMB
    MemoryUsageGB
    SQLServer:Memory Manager
    118488256
    115711
    112
    physical_memory_in_use_kb
    Phy_mem_MB
    Total_mem_MB
    118363564
    115589
    231792
As I have LPIM enabled I'm surprised at the Total_mem_MB result, page file usage is at 0.09%. Any idea why it would be reported like that?
I'm also surprised that the DMV is reporting a lower number for physical memory usage than the perfmon counter, but I guess they're not measuring the exact same thing.
Edit: Version is SQL 2012 SP2 CU2....should have included that :)
