How much power can deliver the USB port on AirPort Express?

I am developing an appliance that requieres access to a WiFi router and a power source (UL 60950-1 compliant) of less than one watt (100-200 mA @ 3.3V) to power my own WiFi device, and the AirPort Express can be the right device to solve both problems with minimun overhead. The problem is that I cannot find the specification of the current / power limits of its USB port.
To check if it can provide the usual five unit loads, I tried to charge an iPhone 4, but it fails showing the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory", and an external 2.5" HD which requires 500 mA causes the following message to appear on AirPort Utility:
USB Power
A device connected to this AirPort base station's USB port requires more power than this AirPort base station can provide. Plug the device into a power supply if possible, or connect it to a powered USB hub.
Any insight will be welcome.

Never mind - I tried "rebooting". I hate it how that always works!

    New to forum, help,
Cannot add a USB hub, powered or not, keep getting message
The device was drawing too much power and the USB port will shut down.

    Hi
Is your machine connected to AC power? If not, connect it, and it should work. You may also try resetting the SMC.
If it still doesn't work when connected to AC, then the hub most likely is drawing too much power (i.e you have too many devices connected to it)

  • Can you turn power off of the USB ports

I have a powerbook g4 800 and it has an external fan that is powered by USB. When I put the computer to sleep and have the power adapter not plugged in, the fan still gets power. So I occasionally have the power completely drained after the laptop was in sleep. Usually I remember to shut off the fan, but it's an extra step that seems like it could be solved by setting something somewhere to power down USB on sleep.

Unfortunately the Mac holds the USB ports in an active state to allow mice and keyboards to wake the machine - I don't know of any way to change this.

  • How do I determined if the USB ports are working?

How can I determine if the USB ports are working.  Macbook Pro i7.
Thanks for any help.  This is a new computer to me migrating from a PC system.

Blessings to those who are able to reply with possible answers.   I am sorry....but I have spent days working on getting my two USB ports to work also.  I basically use the USB ports for a wireless mouse and various flashdrives/memory sticks.  I have a MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard 10.6.8  I have tried software update, SMC and PRAM resets, battery reset, hardware test, creating a new user account....and browsing and reading numerous discussion boards.....awgh!  I have stopped short of using my install DVD (fear of loosing data), upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion (some fear of loosing an application that might not be compatible), contacting an Apple Store (AppleCare or whatever--live 2 hours away + fear of expense), and of course, trashing the laptop.  Does anyone out there have any possible solutions?   I see I am not alone.  --A frustrated first-time Apple products owner.

  • Power Surge on the USB Port.

Well, for the first time ever in my 2 years of having this IPOD plug for my 5th Gen...I wanted to upload some pics on my ipod, but i plugged the port into the computer and the other part into my ipod, and it said my port had a power surge of some sort. So i can't charge my ipod via computer, but it works in my ipod player (which is my deck that i have in my bedroom to play music through speakers) and it works...And other USB items (i.e webcam) work in any port...So its seems its just the plug.
It all of a sudden worked when i just plugged it in as i wrote this to be sure what it said, but does anyone know why this happened?

When you say "port" do you mean the iPod cable that has a dock connector on one end and a USB connector on the other end? When you have your iPod connected to your iPod player does the player have a dock connector on it such that the iPod plugs directly into the player? If the answer to both of these questions is yes then I would suspect that the iPod cable is bad or on its way out. Another test of the cable would be to connect it to an iPod power adapter that plugs into the wall and see if the iPod charges.
The other possibility is that there are other USB devices connected to your computer and when the iPod is connected the USB ports on the computer are unable to supply sufficient power to all of those devices.

  • Can I attach USB drive to Airport Express USB port

I would like to attach a USB drive to my Apple airport Express USB port so that I can back up my data on my MBP and have my music stored on it for playing back over Apple TV.
Is there any issues to doing this? As an example, how would I see the drive?
    thanks in advance.
    Adam

Well, you can certainly attach a USB drive to the port on the AirPort Express.....but nothing will happen if you do this....since the USB port on the Express will only support a compatible printer and Keyspan remote control.
You will need an AirPort Extreme if you want to attach a shared hard drive to the USB port.

  • Can Slingbox solo be plugged into the Ethernet port on airport express to connect to network?

Slim box requires a wired connection to your network unless you purchase their sling link to create a wireless connection through your home electrical outlets.  Can an airport express be used instead?  Would the sling box plug into the Ethernet port on the express or though the USB port.

It may be possible as the 802.11n AirPort Express can be configured to enable its Ethernet port for wired clients in one of two methods: 1) The Express is extending another AirPort, or 2) The Express is configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge.

  • Can you connect VIA USB port on Airport Express?

I have a Airport Express and have the ethernet port used already. Is is possible to use the USB port to hard wire a computer to the Express? I know it meant for a printer but dont need it for that use.

Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AirPort Express is designed to only support USB printers.

  • How to find MAC address for WAN port for Airport Express 2nd Gen.

The New Airport Express has a LAN and a WAN ethernet ports. How can I find the MAC address for the WAN ethernet port as my Service Provider needs it for provisioning....I can fid MAC address for Ethernet and for two wireless 2.4 & 5GHz but not for WAN ethernet port using Airport Utility 6.1

Many thanks for the swift response. However, there is no WAN MAC address on the box or on the device anywhere. I even used magnifying glass to find one .
The airport utility shows only three mac addresses. One for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz and one fo the ethernet (LAN port) whereas there is another ethernet port in the device mentioned as WAN port and I am still not able to find the MAC address for the WAN ehternet port for Airport Express (2nd Generation).
Will appreciate a response to make th device work wiht my service provider as providing them the WAN mac address is a must. Had there been an option for cloning mac address, the issue would have not been there.
Many thanks again - in advance.

  • TA20713 Can I connect and IP Phone to the LAN port on Airport Express?

I am having difficulty connecting my internet phone to the internet.  I have a Comcast Modem with only 1 ethernet port which is connected to the Airport Express.  We are using a secured wireless network and I do not have a way of entering a password or identifiying the network on the Internet Phone.  Will I be able to connect the phone to the LAN for Internet access or do I need something else?  Normally I would simply try this out, but we have an old Airport express as the primary wireless router and we'll need to re-work out in home network a bit to get the newer Airport closer to the phone.  I'd like to know if this is doable before we put all the effort in.  Thank you

The Ethernet port on the "fios box" (I assume you are referring to a DVR/STB) is not active.  However it's easy to use a MoCA adapter to get a direct connection if you have a working coax outlet.  Simply search "MoCA adapter" in the "Ask the Community" search box for details.  Also look here:

  • USB Port On Airport Express

Is this usb port just for printers, or can any device be used on it (eg ipod, usb pen drive ect...)
also can usb hubs be used on it for either printers or any of the devices above
    thanx for your help

It's limited to a single printer or a remote control unit (Keyspan Express Remote). You can connect both a printer and the remote control unit to it through a hub.
