How much ram to run fcpx with lion?
I have a macpro with a xeon graphics card . It is 8 core and qith a 1 trb hd disk and 16gb of ram. I made a clean install for lion meaning I reformatted and then instlled snow leopard then lion. then I installed fcpx among other porgrams including fcpstudio3 .
FCPX runs fine until I get to about the middle of the edit where i am working with a speech which is a whole piece of about 15 minutes . It is one of the pieces in an event folder.
My question is do I have enough ram? or is there another reason for the beach ball to keep in inturupting the edit?
Hi again... can the beach ball that inturpts the program be because of the rendering in the back ground of a long clip (or event) I feel that while I am editing more effects or transistions the amount of ram I have might not be enough to render faster. I can't sell this macpro... I just got it and in my country, that is a lot of money! Do you think the additional 16gb of ram will do? by the way I also threw out all the preference files of FCPX from the preference folder. I'm not sure yet but it looks like it is helping correct the problem. Also my unit does now slow down with lion os and fcpx. maybe it is because of the ATI 5770. Hope that helps others who have a slow down problem. I had that at the start and so I formatted the main hd and then loaded everything else.

It will tell you how much RAM, etc. your Mac can hold.

How much RAM do I need to run FCP effectively?
As you can see below, I have an iMac 2.1 Ghz 20 in. (isight) w/ 512 MB of RAM, and I also have FCP, but have been experiencing some playaback framerate issues. So I have decided to upgrade my RAM to either 1 GB, 1.5 GB, or 2.5 GB... My question is how much RAM do you have and how well does it run. I know 2.5 GB's would be the ideal amount, but if I only need 1.5 GB then I would prefer to go with that and use the extra cash for new speakers.

Having media and the os on the same disk is a recipe for disaster.

How much RAM should be in use while not running anything?
Just for the heck of it, I checked the Activity Monitor with nothing else open to see how much RAM was being used. Much to my surprise, nearly 900MB of my 2GB was being used with literally every application closed except for Activity Monitor. This can't be normal...
My Macbook Pro is also using about 1.3GB RAM with virtually everything shut down (mail, safari, ical, itunes, etc). Yet, my husbands uses only about 400-500MB with the nearly identical applications left running.
I have 4GB, he has 2GB.
We compared the running applications one-by-one, and mine uses nearly double his for the exact same application.
Does a laptop use more memory if it has more memory to use?
This really bothers me. There does not seem to be any reason for mine to be consuming more RAM when running the same small applications as his does yet I can't figure out why?

OSX 10.6.8
Is 8 GB enough memory for Logic, or should I bump it up to 16 GB?

I haven't had any memory issues (yet), but I just read something about freezing tracks taking some of the load off of memory.
If you're using mostly loops you have plenty of RAM.
Also, if you're not laying down a bunch of recorded audio tracks.. (like recording a band) your single TB hard drive should do fine. Freezing comes into play when the CPU is nearing load limit because of heavy use of software instruments and effects that demand a lot of CPU.
I would say for what you're doing at this time, your system is fine as it is.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.. if/when you run into a problem then deal with it, it's not like you're operating a commercial studio.
My suggestion would be to learn how to use Logic's effects correctly.. (Reverbs, Compressors, EQ, Delay...etc)
Use a Reverb or Delay on a bus, then several tracks and use the same effect, if you use all effects as inserts you're wasting CPU.
Learning how to use your system (as is) is FAR more important than how much RAM, what model Mac or how fast your CPU is.
A good engineer can make a world class recording in Garageband. Don't get to caught up in what you have or don't have.. have fun, be creative. -

I have IMac OSX 10.9.4, 4GB,Processor 3.06 with Intell2Duo. I would like to check for Malware. I run a TechTool Pro 6 every month and that comes up great.
When check how much memory I am using, with only Safari open I am using 3.9 and more of her 4.0 memory. She is very. very slow in processing. I had 4000
trash to clean out and it took her over an hour to expel. Also for some reason Safari will not allow me to click on a link, in my G-mail, and let it go to the page.
It has a sign saying a pop-up blocker is on and will not let me do it. I must open the stamp to look at my e-mails and if I have redirected link now I can do it.
I have not changed my preferences so where is this pop-up blocker?
I have looked at preferences on Safari and Google, which I do not understand Google, and do not see where this blocker could be.
Malware is something I want to make sure is not on my computer. Tech Tool Pro 6 is all I know of and it does not detect Malware.

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.

JeffIn the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

To prepare for the upcoming release of Lion I also suggest spending $29 to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade your OS. -

I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro. It is a mid-2012 model. It currently has 4 GB. I connect it to an external monitor which makes it easier for me to use while editing. I always have the application sit and load with the spinning ball icon. I use FCPX, Photoshop, and After Effects on a daily basis. I was wondering if the RAM increase would help me create my videos more efficently. Thanks for all the comments and help ahead of time!
You should benefit from adding more RAM. How much is hard to say but at least to 8 GBs. You might know more if you observed your memory usage in Activity Monitor.

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs. -
Considering buying a Macbook Pro, but I wanted to ask around and find out approximatly how much RAM I would need so that I dont get a model thats too powerful or too weak for my usage. I was considering 4 Gbs but im not sure if thats enough.

I've had that exact problem - someone gave me what was, supposedly, an iPhone 4s but turned out to be a 3Gs. Couldn't update to iOS 7.x so it just sits on my desk right now.
And when I had my MacBook Pro (1,1 2006 model) I couldn't upgrade to Lion - was 'stuck with' Snow Leopard.
O'd technology that no longer plays nice with new OS's? Time to get a new machine.
