Hi, I'm looking at upgrading my MacBook Ram from 2GB to 4GB. I've had a look around various websites, forums etc. to find out how much Ram my Mac can hold but it seems to have given me conflicting advice. The Mac is from late 2006. Considering buying a Macbook Pro, but I wanted to ask around and find out approximatly how much RAM I would need so that I dont get a model thats too powerful or too weak for my usage. I was considering 4 Gbs but im not sure if thats enough.
What im mainly planning to do on the Macbook is:
internet browsing (chrome, safari etc)
Mail app
Word processing software like Microsoft word
Eclipse (java programming)
skype
utorrent
Say I have all these programs running at the same time, how much RAM will I need to have?

Oh also, I just remembered wanting to ask this, have you ever tried downloading an OS update for a macbook and apple wont let you because you have outdated technology? Like trying to download ios 7 on an iphone 3G for example.
I've had that exact problem - someone gave me what was, supposedly, an iPhone 4s but turned out to be a 3Gs. Couldn't update to iOS 7.x so it just sits on my desk right now.
And when I had my MacBook Pro (1,1 2006 model) I couldn't upgrade to Lion - was 'stuck with' Snow Leopard.
O'd technology that no longer plays nice with new OS's? Time to get a new machine.

"Properly set" is mostly a software issue in my book: make sure that you remove all the unwanted bloat from the OS that you're running...
Now, only you know what applications you need or not, but I'll tell you how I have my daughter's T41 (2373-4GU) set up, just as an idea:
a) XP Pro runs in the "classic" mode, with all the "eye candy" disabled .
b) AVG Free AntiVirus has replaced Norton
c) Automatic updates have been disabled. I choose which ones to install, and when.
d) I have installed "SpeedSwitch XP" application to optimize CPU speeds depending on the load.
Once again, my word is not from any type of holy book...
On the hardware side, this machine is stock apart from being upgraded to 1Gb RAM and 60Gb/7200rpm HDD. It will never run Vista properly, and it won't ever handle serious games, but will do most anything else that an average user requires IMO.

Well, any mobile computing device you buy is technically obsolete within a year or less of being released - for any company's products that's true. The amount of RAM is going to be based on a number of factors - the capability of the mobile cpu being used, the footprint of iOS and the built in functions, the typical RAM usage of known iOS 3rd party apps, the size of battery(s) available to fit in the space available, the added cost of additional RAM and any number of additional parameters. In a device like a tablet or smart phone, every single component that goes into them involves some trade off or compromise.

There are two answers: the official Apple answer and the "you're on your own" answer.
1 - For the official iMac max RAM, see iMac Memory specifications and upgrades
2 - For the "your're on your own" answer, everymac.com has a list of the Actual Maximum RAM you can put in every model Mac. In many cases this is more than the official maximum RAM.
After deciding how much RAM you want to put in your iMac, I suggest going to Crucial.com and use the memory advisor or system scanner to see what RAM modules are compatible with your iMac.

HELP: How much RAM can my G4 hold?

Hey, quick thanks up front to anyone who answers this.
I've got an iBook G4 that I bought in 2004. It's a 1Ghz G4 with a 60gig hard drive. When I bought it from MacMall, I got a free RAM upgrade, and as such up until about a month ago, it had 640MB of RAM. Then without warning the upgrade RAM died. I was left running with the 128MB that were built in. You should try running Dashboard on 128Megs... It's ****. I have since taken the bad RAM out, and am looking into replacing it/upgrading so I have 1GB of RAM. Now here's the thing: When I went to the Apple specs page, it said that my computer could only have a maximum of 640Megs of RAM. But when I look at the slot, it seems to match the same size as for the 1GB cards. How much can I really hold? I would like to be able to go to 1GB.

Your computer will accept a 1GB module. This is not stated on Apple's specifications page because 1GB modules were not available when that iBook first came out, and the specifications were not updated afterwards.

I was wondering how much the maximum amount of RAM i can install is, and also how much my computer will recognise as i am going to upgrade to 4GB. officially according to Apple the max RAM is 4GB.
However according to this http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white -13-early-2009-nvidia-specs.html and OWC up to 6GB RAM is possible.
Might be a limitaion of the used logic board / chipset that limits the RAM speed to 667MHz.

Thank you for your insight. I had planned on just getting 4GB but your comment regarding using the system longer and being able to keep up with software advances is extremely relevant. While this "old" MB is nearing three years of age, I do not plan on retiring it any time soon. 8GB of RAM will allow me to use this machine until the hardware is no longer supported by the software, I decide to get a new MB Air at some point down the road or I experience a catastrophic failure. My operating system is 32 bit windows vista home premium. I am aware that a 32 bit system will only support up to 4gb of RAM. I really just need to know what the motherboard "Hewlett-Packard 30D9" will support at best. I already have 2gb of RAM and I just want to know if it would be useful to attempt to add more. I am also aware what products are available so don't give me links to stores. The RAM type currently installed is DDR2, if that's significant in determining the maximum effective RAM. The old girl has some age on her so my warranty is out, which apparently means no email support from hp, the dicks. I recently did a factory restore and upgraded my battery, I'm just sort of seeing how well I can make my 2008 laptop run so any suggestions regarding my particular computer are welcome. If you put a 2GB and a 4GB stick in together, your MBP will use all 6GB the same way it would use 4GB, except that there will be a small performance penalty because the modules are not matched. That will be more than offset by theperformance benefits of having more RAM, if you actually need it. If you don't need it, there won't be any benefit from the upgrade.
I read this too. I read that when you do a 4 gig and 2 gig card, your processor won't be able to work off of the ram simultaneously. The processor will have to choose one or the other.
Where'd you get this? I think it's nonsense.
Oh, and there are no 3GB RAM modules.

I am sitting with a 20 inch iMac, with a 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU.

I mainly use it for everyday tasks, but sometimes I indulge in a bit of video editing followed by iDVD creation of DVDs. It's not that I feel I need more RAM, but RAM is so inexpensive these days, I just thought I'd stuff it as full of memory as it can get.
If it can only use 3 GB even if I have 4, I might just as well get one 2 GB chip and put in there. No point in having 4 if 1 GB is just gonna sit around doing nothing.

One reason I favor OWC is that if you call them up and tell them that their RAM is malfunctioning, replacements are sent out that day, not when they get the bad RAM from you.There are a couple of forum colleagues who use Corsair RAM with no problems. Macs seem to be very selective about RAM and some brands simply do not work properly in Macs. OWC and Crucial have good track records, hence the recommendations.
I often grin when someone complains about an inexpensive or bargain part does not perform well in a Mac. When one pays a premium price for a computer, I would think that quality should come before price for any add-ons or modifications. It is like purchasing a Ferrari and then using regular gas.
If your replacement Corsair RAM is working, you should be just fine. One bad experience should not condemn a manufacturer or vendor.
