How much space does a Windows 7 install take on a Mac?

Installation of Windows 7 is required at least around 20GB of disk space 64bit version, 32bit version is around 16GB, 100GB is a sensible amount of disk space for a Windows installation, I suppose.

  • How much space does OS X Mountain Lion take?

I am considering a MacBook Air 128 GB for my next laptop, but I'm not sure if that's enough. How much space does the OS take up?

OS X Mountain Lion, without any third-party app, takes about 9 GB of hard disk. The minimum requirement is 8 GB of hard drive space, so if you have to store a lot of data, you may have to buy an external drive to store all the files you want

  • How much energy does a "brick" power cord take?

    Hi,
    1. How much energy does the White Brick power cord consume when the computer is fully charged?
         A. Does it vary based on processor action?
         B. How bout when the computer is sleeping?
         C. How bout when the computer is off?
    2. How much energy does it consume when it's not attached to the computer?
         A. I also want to know this for chargers for other Apple devices.
Thanks for any info on this. I haven't done any searching on this, so maybe it's an obvious question.

Thanks for these answers. I neglected this post for a while as I didn't have time to investigate. The answers were helpful.
I did find some more information:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/6423752#6423752 lists (for a 2008 macbook) the consumption. I would be interested in seeing this for the latest models. Especially interesting is this: "Power brick energized, but not attached to computer - unmeasurable." Is the power adpater (it's a transformer) this energy efficient? This is a big deal if I am planning on unplugging my laptop at night.
I also see this: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/environment/ . But, unfortunately (and outrageously), it does not give details (it is not outrageous as a status quo piece of marketing, but it's outrageous that the status quo is that little information! So, the problem is not Apple, per se, but the habits. Maybe that is an area for a marketing company to improve on!
I found this for some more, general information: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/everyday-tech/plug-in-transformer.htm . That gives: "The power consumption is not large [on power chargers] -- on the order of 1 to 5 watts per transformer."
I'd certainly be interested in information on Apple's other products (like iPod and iPhone chargers).

  • How much data does the apple maps app use per hour ?

    hello,
i would like to know, if somebody could give me a rough number of how much the Apple Maps app uses per hour for navigation ?

Apple's Maps app uses vector graphics, so it doesn't have to download data everytime your view changes, & also has an offline mode...you can download quite a large area over WiFi & then use this cache to navigate.
So, I really wouldn't worry too much about its data usage. Most tests I've read indicate it uses about 80% less data than Google Maps.

  • How much room does Time Machine take

I have a Macbook Pro with 120GB HD. I wanted to know how big of an external HD I need for Time Machine. I also want to know if I can use it as a HD for large files (imovies) and have that separate from the Time Machine application.

You can put files on the TM drive, but sooner or later you wont be able to. Time Machine will use up as much space as you give it, so regardless of the size of the drive you connect, sooner or later Time Machine will fill it up with backup information. The time it takes to do this will depend on the size of the files you use and how often you edit them. Basically, the larger the drive the better, but it all depends on the two factors: file size and frequency of editing. When Time Machine fills up the drive, it will delete the oldest backups and replace them with new ones dynamically, keeping the drive full but updated with the most recent content. Unfortunately this will mean you wont have any space to put other files on the drive. If you have files on the drive, time machine will fill up the drive around those files and when you delete them, time machine will use up that new space. Basically this means the free space on the Time Machine drive is a temporary thing that will only get smaller and smaller until it will be nonexistant. The best solution for this is to partition the drive into two volumes, and use one for TM and the other for regular disk space (the problem with this is knowing how much to designate to each volume).
I think Apple should put in limits for Time Machins so it only uses a given number of MB/GB on a given drive, and also make it so the Time Machine backups can be dynamically reduced in size by deleting the oldest backups until the database size is reduced to the desired number of GB. I've given feedback to apple about this, and I suggest others do the same. As it currently is, your Time Machine partition is reserved by the system for one purpose only, and other uses for that partition are temporary and limited.

  • FYI: How much room does album artwork take up on the iPod?

I was wondering the answer to this question before I tried it, so I thought I'd let other people know what I found out:
With the new 'get album artwork' feature in iTunes 7, I've added a bunch of artwork to my library, but was worried it would take up too much space if I loaded the art onto my 4GB iPod nano as well (through a checkbox in the 'music' section of the ipod overview screen). It turns out the size required is pretty modest, and for me worth it.
I had 735 songs taking up 3.64 GB, with 80mb free. Adding the artwork only took up about 17mb, leaving me with about 63mb free. Not bad.
    iBook G4 800Mhz 12", iPod nano (1st gen)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I did a test on this several months ago, by attaching the same artwork at different resolutions. The result is that the .jpg file is added into the the .mp4 file as is - no compression on the data seems to be going on, judging from the differences in file sizes. There is definitely good reason to keep your artwork small, but not so small that the iPod has to upsample it to display (you'll get a blurry/pixellated image in that case). I keep mine all at 180x180. Since the new video iPod has 240 lines, it may be good to go a little higher. But some images you get off the web are big (and have other problems as well), so using automatic artwork loaders will work against you in this case. Personally, I don't mind spending a minute or so (while the CD imports) to clean up the image before I add it to the songs.

  • When looking at how much room is taken up by audio, apps, etc. on your phone in iTunes, what is the "other" category?

When looking at how much room is taken up by audio, apps, etc. on your phone in iTunes, what is the "other" category?

"Other" contains documents and app data associated with apps.  It can also contain things like stored emails and browser history.  It's usually around 1-2gigs.  If it's any more than that, there's a chance that you have corrupted data on your iPad.  The only way to fix that problem is to restore your iPad to factory settings and start anew.

  • I have an iPhone 5S, with iOS 8.1.2  I am trying to do a system restore but the message I get on the desktop is that there is not enough room on the iPhone. How much room is required?

I have an iPhone 5S, with iOS 8.1.2  I am trying to do a system restore but the message I get on the desktop is that there is not enough room on the iPhone. How much room is required?
I had an important app. (Memos by bluemarblesoftware.com) that I accidentally deleted. It of course had many memos, some with quite a lot of information. I did sync my phone on a regular basis and I think the memos should be on the desktop computer. I tried to do a restore function but I got a message saying there was not enough room on the iPhone. How much room is needed?

    generally you need 1.90gb
what you can do is back up your phone to your computer before doing the update, just as a precaution.

  • How much room should be partitioned for Windows XP?

Alright, I have a different install disc for XP with SP3 which should work. Since I'll only be using XP for a couple of things (mainly small programs, but also for office and such), how much room should I leave for XP on my 320 gig HD so that both OSs have some breathing room (most of my other stuff like music and pictures are on the Leopard side of things)?

But I hear that it has better compatibility to run FAT32 than NTFS. Does it really matter too much?
While OSX is able to read and write to FAT32 partition, it can only read from NTFS partitions.
With the help of apps like NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ and/or NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ OSX can also write to NTFS partitions.
To me personally this is no problem, since I want OSX and Windows to seperated (I even have Windows on a harddisk of its own in my Mac Pro) and for file exchange between OSX and Windows I use an external FAT32 HD.
But the advantage of the newer, better and more robust NTFS file system outweighs these 'disadvantages'.
    And FAT32 has a file-size limitation for single-files of 4GB.
Also, not to be pessimistic, but what if something goes wrong with the partition or install? Can I restart my Mac and would it be unaffected? This disc should work, but I want to know just in case...
Before 'fumbling' with any kind of partitioning on a harddisk I always make a backup of my important files, or better said I use SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of my OSX.
While the chances that something goes wrong are quite slim (I have made the partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant for about 10 times now), the possibility is always there.

  • G4 - how much power does it use?

How does the computer use power? It's not like a heavy duty motor in a refrigerator, a shop vac., heater or power tools...
How much power does a powermac G4 consume, on average...in terms of dollars added to a monthly bill? I see on the back of the Mac that it's rated at 6 to 8 amps, but I can't understand how it can suck up that much electricity when all I hear is the fan, basically.
I use it for video editing, so if remove internet, and most other programs that might use power, except for apps needed for video, photoshop and text edit, would I save at all?
    thanks!
    k

...so if remove internet, and most other programs that might use power, except for apps needed for video, photoshop and text edit, would I save at all?
Hardware, not software, uses power. One heavy-duty program may demand more of the hardware than another but most--pro audio/video editing and some 3D games excepted--never force the hardware to work up a sweat on modern machines.
There is a current tester that clamps around the main power cord of anything electrical to read power consumption. I can't find the link to it right but it is standard piece of kit for electricians. My appliance guy's tool bag has sported one as long as I've known him. If you REALLY need to find out hard numbers, that's the way to go; be aware that the tester I saw on the 'net was US$100--you could run a G4 a long time for $100.

  • How much sound does a RMBP make

I'm planning on getting my first Mac. The $2,799 MacBook Pro with retina display 15". I have a student discount so it will be $2,599 instead.
I am going to wait for the next generation of MacBooks to be released, also I have a question about its sounds. Will it make a lot of sound like fan noises? It needs to be COMPLETELY silent. Because I will be using this next year in class when I'm a sophomore. And does the keyboard make any noise either? Thanks!
Also, if I get something like "it depends on what you are doing" here are some examples.
5-7 tabs open and a text editor for notes, some system settings and misc things. No gaming.                   How much sound does this make?
    Thanks in advance!

I have one and it is totally silent, unless I am mirroring video to my tv, then the fans kick on.
For example, I routinely have ten or more tabs open and it is silent. Video or video editing may make the fans be audible. The keyboard is quiet.
I am a low income person who loves the retina display. It makes ordinary photos seem professional. The extra size from the 13" is useful.
Best to play with the choices at an Apple Store to check out your preferences, if possible.
Text on the retina kind of spoils me for any other computer.
