How much sales does Apple lose by not allowing upgrade of hardware?

I wonder if Apple has ever conducted market research to find out how much sales they lose because of the inability to upgrade components with a mac?
I suspect they haven't done so because they don't wish to find out the answer!
I imagine they have simply assumed that they don't want to affect the bottom line sales of new macs by allowing users to upgarde their older machines.
I believe this is a shortsighted view. If for instance users could upgrade components inside the tower, by being allowed to say buy the motherboard on its own. There would be significant numbers of people who would buy the tower (who now don't) that would offset the reduction in sales of new complete systems in the future.
Wouldn't it be fun to find out?
Instead of having to spend $3000 to upgrade to the latest and greatest by buying a complete system Apple could offer the motherboard to repace the older one thus saving the consumer a lot of money! Is this not what serving the customer is really about? and part of the reason why they only have 5% market share?

Since you asked, and I seem to be in a particularily foul mood today, I'll take some of that action.
I quit the upgrade dance three years ago when I found out I could have a great little Unix workstation that sat on my lap. No longer am I forced to worry what hardware will work with Solaris, or Linux, or FreeBSD. I plunk down my money, and it works. Works so well that all of the machines I've purchased (one per year) are just as relevant as they day I purchased them. Yeah, they don't work so fast as the newest, but so what?
Dell, HP, Gateway; they do not allow you to purchase motherboards in which to upgrade your computer. Not notebooks (never, ever in fact), and only desktops because their crummy form-factor is pretty much the same as everyone else. But that's been changing too.
If you have a question about the Macbook Pro, please ask it. Otherwise, thanks for the opportunity to vent on you. It's been a rather sad day for me and I appreciate the chance to take it out on you.

  • How much data does Apple TV use?

I am experiencing a large amount of data usage and cannot determine what the culprit is.  I am approaching my cap of data allowance on a regular basis.  Does anyone know how much data the Apple TV uses?  I realize it depends on what you are streaming.  I primarily stream Netflix (set on the lowest data rate)
    Thanks

I found this answer on NetFlix's blog sometime last year:
In the USA you have 3 video quality options: good quality, better quality, and best quality. Here is how much bandwidth they each use:
Good quality (up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Better quality (up to 0.7 GB per hour)
Best quality (up to 1 GB per hour, or up to 2.3 GB per hour for HD)
Depending on how many movies you watch this could have a huge impact on your monthly usage...obviously your ISP wants you to watch its own movies.

  • How much tax does Apple charge?

I want to get an iPad 4 black 32gb wifi only and a smart case. The iPad is $599 and the case is $49.99. How much would that be with tax? I live in California if that matters.

Whatever is the appropriate federal, state, county, city and/or
other jurisdiction tax for the location where the sale is made.
Call the Apple store or retailer if you are in doubt.

  • How much data does Apple Maps use?

I used maps for 15-20 minutes and it used 300 MB of network data.  Looking for an answer because I only get 2GB per month and I wasted almost 20% of it in less than a half hour.

I guess it is possible I had satellite view on.  I just used whatever was default and I got that huge data charge.  I have just been avoiding maps since and using everything else normally so it has to be maps that was my big problem.  Thanks for the response!

  • HT3209 How much download does an Apple TV Movie generally use?

How much download does an Apple TV Movie generally use?

Yes, the ATV2 only streams. It has an 8gb cache that stores the film as you watch it but you cannot use it as a hard-drive.
I believe you can rent HD movies on the computer, albeit a more limited selection. Even so you won't have any format issues.

  • How much sound does a RMBP make

I'm planning on getting my first Mac. The $2,799 MacBook Pro with retina display 15". I have a student discount so it will be $2,599 instead.
I am going to wait for the next generation of MacBooks to be released, also I have a question about its sounds. Will it make a lot of sound like fan noises? It needs to be COMPLETELY silent. Because I will be using this next year in class when I'm a sophomore. And does the keyboard make any noise either? Thanks!
Also, if I get something like "it depends on what you are doing" here are some examples.
5-7 tabs open and a text editor for notes, some system settings and misc things. No gaming.                   How much sound does this make?
    Thanks in advance!

I have one and it is totally silent, unless I am mirroring video to my tv, then the fans kick on.
For example, I routinely have ten or more tabs open and it is silent. Video or video editing may make the fans be audible. The keyboard is quiet.
I am a low income person who loves the retina display. It makes ordinary photos seem professional. The extra size from the 13" is useful.
Best to play with the choices at an Apple Store to check out your preferences, if possible.
Text on the retina kind of spoils me for any other computer.

  • How much energy does a "brick" power cord take?

    Hi,
    1. How much energy does the White Brick power cord consume when the computer is fully charged?
         A. Does it vary based on processor action?
         B. How bout when the computer is sleeping?
         C. How bout when the computer is off?
    2. How much energy does it consume when it's not attached to the computer?
         A. I also want to know this for chargers for other Apple devices.
Thanks for any info on this. I haven't done any searching on this, so maybe it's an obvious question.

Thanks for these answers. I neglected this post for a while as I didn't have time to investigate. The answers were helpful.
I did find some more information:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/6423752#6423752 lists (for a 2008 macbook) the consumption. I would be interested in seeing this for the latest models. Especially interesting is this: "Power brick energized, but not attached to computer - unmeasurable." Is the power adpater (it's a transformer) this energy efficient? This is a big deal if I am planning on unplugging my laptop at night.
I also see this: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/environment/ . But, unfortunately (and outrageously), it does not give details (it is not outrageous as a status quo piece of marketing, but it's outrageous that the status quo is that little information! So, the problem is not Apple, per se, but the habits. Maybe that is an area for a marketing company to improve on!
I found this for some more, general information: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/everyday-tech/plug-in-transformer.htm . That gives: "The power consumption is not large [on power chargers] -- on the order of 1 to 5 watts per transformer."
I'd certainly be interested in information on Apple's other products (like iPod and iPhone chargers).

  • How much space does tiger take up & how to make it take up less

i recently read a post by someone claiming that tiger took 18.5gb on there ibook, and some one replied saying that apple claims you can install tiger in to 3gb.
    : is this true?
: if so, how do you "compress" it?
: iff not so, how much space does it take up on avarage?

    hi Axl....
I've got tiger in ok, running fine - bought family pack and have done 3 installs without problem, so that's the good news ....
I did a major reshuffle and toss-out of files before I installed - bought 80gb mobile external hard drive - and did install with 5+gb free, so after it had about 3gb free, then all of a sudden I went down to less than 1gb
I've been in a hunt for more files to throw out (a nice find were the old ipod updaters that were eating 500mb) ....
If I want to throw out most of the language files (for instance) ... where are they ? (I did search for danois and found nothing, so .... buried ?)
any other suggestions for things to throw away .... I've pretty much eliminated 90% of all things classic, for instance ....
and - do you have ideas for why space seems to disappear so fast .... I'm not doing anything special, but wham, 2gb flies away to ???
    thanks

  • How much ram does the iPhone 6 Plus have?

How much ram does the iPhone 6 Plus have?

This is what I got on the info....
IPhone’s RAM has been very little, even pitiful compared to other flagships. Now 1GB RAM is still the standard configuration for the current iPhone 5 / 5s and iPhone 6.
Is Apple’s system optimization can really never need to increase the memory capacity? Obviously the answer is no. Recently, GSMArena published a sheet of iPhone 6 Plus detailed specifications, we can clearly see the “2GB RAM” in the memory list.
GSMArena also posted the benchmark score for iPhone 6 yesterday, but we seen that A8 GPU not seem to improve a lot in the processing capability compared to A7 – only increased 4.65%.
Apple usually not declare the detailed hardware parameters of their products, because those indicators not have too many advantages compared to other similar products, and even looks a bit shabby. But for Apple, these are not the most important, the company always focusing on the overall performance and user experience of the product. iPhone 6 Plus is the largest ever. Apple has said the iPhone 6 Plus screen reached 1080P in the event, as a larger screen means more resource consumption, and the processor needs to handle higher pixel image, so increasing RAM is the best choice to enhance stability and performance.
So based on the above evidence and our speculate, iPhone 6 is indeed possible with 2GB RAM. If in doubt, all we could wait is finding out the truth after dismantling the device. Course this just may be a beginning, we also expect Apple can give more memory for the upcoming next-generation iPad and iPad Mini.

  • How much space does iOS takes?

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I want to know how much space does the iOS takes (installed) on a default iPhone 4 for all it's versions (eg. latest iOS 3, latest iOS 4 and iOS 5).
Watching the 2011 WWDC keynote on iOS 5, you will see a handful of new functionalities being added that will take the user experience even further, which is great!
But if you have minimum technical background, you know that more features means more lines of code, and this WILL take some extra space on your device. Also, iOS is an ever-changing product distributed over the web, but the iPhones have always the same hard-fixed ammount of storage space (only changes if you buy a new device).
This is what I'm looking for:
    iOS 3.5.1 -> 1,2 Gb
    iOS 4.3.3 -> 2,1 Gb
    iOS 5.0.0 -> 2,9 Gb
** those are fictitious values, most probably not the actual ones **
Important: I'm just curious about it, I don't find this being a big issue as 16 or 32 gb of space is pretty much. Even if the OS takes 2~3 gigs out of it, there's still plenty space for everything you need on the go.
    Thank you very much!!

    Something like 660MB, apparently:
