How much should we rely on "Parent" nodes like group?

So I'm curious how much overhead does these groups, regions, panes, etc take up, and is there a point to worry about them?
in the current application I'm working on I was thinking of having a group of bookstypes, within a group of bookshelves, within a group of bookcases. So technically I could have 5 groups on a shelf, 5 shelf groups on a bookcase, and 10 book cases being displayed at once, 250 is a lot of groups.
Now I've seen people post on here saying that have hundreds of groups and such, so I think I'll be okay, but I'm just curious what the practice on these things are. Groups to me are going to make everything much easier, but I don't want to take "easy" for "slower." So if I didn't have these groups I would have to worry about where each book type is on each shelf, where each shelf is on each bookcase, for dragging, moving, rotating, etc.

Yes, you want a class to do "one thing." Of course, "one thing" can be kind of fuzzy, but there sould be one core responsibility, with maybe a couple of different ways of accomplishing it, or a couple of different aspects or faces to that responsibility.
As an example that I pull out of you-don't-wanna-know-where, look at java.io.File.
It does "one thing", but it's really sort of multiple aspects of or tasks associated with that one thing.
The one thing being "model a file on the file system" and the multiple tasks being, find out the file's type (directory or regular file), create the file, delete the file, list the "file's" (directory's) contents, etc.
As for .java file length, It does vary on a class to class basis, and depending on whether you put braces on a line by themselves, how much you comment, etc. In general though, my classes tend to be a couple dozen to a couple hundred lines in length. If they start getting bigger than that, I look closely to see if it makes sense to refactor. If I see a 1000 line .java file.
Note, though, that generated .java files (e.g. from compiling JSPs, or various source code generation tools) tend to be longer, and one doesn't generally farg around with them by hand.

How much should I expect to pay to replace damaged hard drive?

Nowadays a 3.5" SATA drive with 1 TB of storage space is under $70.00 depending upon cache size and spindle speed. Enterprise level drives will cost more since they come with a longer warranty and have a heavier use capability. These are desktop drives.
Your profile suggests you have a laptop model. Notebook sized drives are more expensive.
Look at OWC to find suitable replacement drives and prices dependent upon what you need. It's hard to provide you the correct information because you did not tell us what type of drive needs replacing.

How much should it cost to replace a hard drive on a MacBook Pro?  I think the drive that failed was 500gb.

You should call the repair shop of your choice and ask for an estimate.  Make sure the estimate includes taxes, labor costs, etc.

You can buy a factory unlocked on direct from Apple sim free, make sure you get the right one and not just a contract free one.  I am sure  one of our US members will be able to give you the price.

  • How much should I partition for Time Machine/Backup?

    Hi all,
I upgraded my PB G4 HD to a 160GB recently and have just purchased a 1TB External HD. How much should I partition in the external to be used for Time Machine backup purposes of my internal HD? Will the same size suffice, or should I allocate more?
Also, I was thinking of formatting the drive so that it's both Windows and OS X friendly, but that means formatting it to MS-DOS something (I was just reading about it in another thread), will that cause any issues for the partition for Time Machine that I created? Thanks.

That's not practical. If you want to use the hard drive on a Windows machin while still being useful for Time Machine you should use MacDrive.

I would make the partition at least twice the size of the internal drive. Preferably, you would want 50 GB for a Leopard install that includes just the base operating system so you can boot off the 50 GB to recover your Time Machine data if your Leopard installer disc ever becomes unusable.
Also since you have a Powerbook, your 1 TB hard drive should be Firewire. USB will not boot Powerbooks. If it is USB only, you can remove the external hard drive case and replace it with one compatible with the drive inside that case from http://www.macsales.com/ that has Firewire.

  • How much should I offer Cascade Capitol ?

Hi all,    If you could give me some advise.  CASCADE CAPITOL purchased my debt from Santander for a car repo and referred it to this collection agency (Stoneleigh Recovery Associates ),the amount owed is 7700.00 . I am still within the SOL for another 2 years. and just got my second collection letter last week. How much should I offer Cascade Capitol to settle the account and if they decline what should I do after that? I want to get it paid off but I can't even afford 1/4 of what I owe. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks,

  • How much should i have free storsge on my ipad air 1

HEllo guys i have ipad air 1...how much storage should i have free to make it run fast and smooth?because i heart if i installed lot of apps snd fulled up memory it will be slow and i might be facing freezes...so how much should i have free?and thanks

I know you are looking for a number, but it's really hard to gauge. IMO, some of the problems with performance can be due to having corrupt files or settings on the device and that can happen if you have 2/3 of the space free on your iPad.
IF you really want a number, keep about 5% of the storage free, so if you have 55 GB of storage available overall, make sure that you keep about 2-3 GB free. That is merely an estimate - or better yet - a guesstimate.

  • Should I sell my iPod Touch 4th Gen.? If so, how much should I sell it for?

Hi, there! I'm new to this Apple Discussions page, so greetings to all. So I am thinking of selling my iPod Touch 4th Generation in order to buy the iPod Touch 5th Generation. My iPod has 16 gigabytes; I'm planning on getting the 5th Gen. 16gb as a replacement. Anyway, I have only had this iPod for a year, but I really want the newer device because of the iOS and other new features. It only has scratches on the back and doesn't have any cracks on the screen. How much do you think I should sell it for?
Oh, and if anyone has the iPod 5th Gen. 16gb, do you think it is worth considering selling my 4th Gen. for the newer iDevice?
BTW, I am not planning on selling it back to Apple or Amazon or anything of that sort because I want to sell it at a higher price. I'd sell it to a friend/family member/relative.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

I get that you are not planning on selling it online but you can utilize eBay to get an idea of what people are paying for those models. Just search for '4th gen iPod touch 16 GB', switch to 'Sold Listings' and see what recent listings have sold for.

  • Selling my G3 B&W, how much should i advertise it for?

I am going to sell my G3 B&W computer and buy myself a nice new apple laptop but I'm not sure how much to advertise it for in my papers, not ebay. I don't have anything against ebay but i won't get as much for it.
This is the specification of it: -
    G3 400Mhz
    512MB RAM
    2 x 10GB SCSI and 1 x 20GB SCSI HDD's
    DVD±RW drive
    17" monitor, keyboard and mouse.
OS X panther 10.3.9 (all updates installed) complete with all discs and manuals.
So how much do you all think i should sell it for? thanks

You would get more if you parted it out.
    The G3 tower $50-75 if its a Rev2
The DVDr $30 if it was/is a high end sought after model
    Panther maybe $25
The monitor in some markets have to be given away so you'd be lucky to get $25
No way that is worth $200
I don't know why people keep quoting those sites as a realistic price guide. The people who post it wouldn't pay the amounts listed there for those units. At best its what you'd get as a tax write-off if the computers were donated but those listed prices are not the going market rates in the U.S.

  • How much should be charged for a recording session?

In the future after I master the art of home recording, (well at least as far as garageband will take me) I'd like to make alittle money recording artists around the area that don't have access or the know how to record themselves. I'm talking about simple stuff like recording a guy and his guitar, and maybe a bass or keyboard tops. How much would you guys suggest charging for this service?
    Message was edited by: lukestp

It's not that no one wants to, it's just that there's no way to answer the question. You should probably ask your potential clients what they are willing to pay, or call up a studio in your area and see how much they charge. It really depends on your competition. It's just like any other business. It's your customers that will decide if your product provides a good value. Given that more and more people are getting Garageband and the price of good quality interfaces is going down, it will be your expertise that people will be paying for. It's hard to tell what your level of expertise will be at some point in the future.

  • Selling iPhone - How much should I charge?

I was at a company function today and someone came up to me and wanted to buy my iPhone. I have the 1st generation 8GB phone, which is in fine condition. When I research how much I should charged, I just saw a lot of unlocked phones. Mine is not unlocked. It is regular, 8GB from the Apple store and I have AT&T service.
I don't want to over charge my colleague, but I would like to get as much as I can for it so that I can get a new iPhone. (Whole story is that this person from work wants a 3G, and will buy mine to give to her husband, that way they both have one, but he doesn't need the 3G version).
Anyone have a recommendation for how much I should charge? Can I expect $199 or more, or does that seem a bit unreasonable?
    Thanks for your perpsective.

Well, you should be able to charge more considering:
    1) iPhone 3G is not yet available really...
    2) They may not want an iPhone 3G because they dont want to sign a new activation with AT&T. With the old iPhone, they can just pop in their old sim card from their phone and they are good to go...
    3) People may want an unlocked phone (which cannot happen to 3G iPhones because you must sign a new contract to purchase one...
I would say that even though the newer models are $200, older models are more valuble to people not in the market to terminate or extend their phone providers contracts... I'd say between $300 and $500 at this point depending on if the phone is in good condition and/or unlocked.

  • I have to change my disk, computer won't start. How much should I expect to pay?

    Hi!
My computer has a grey screen and won't start. I called Apple and I was told my disk was broken and needed to be repaired. Is it true? How much does it cost?

It could be true - but if I were you I would take the machine to an Apple Store or an AASP to get a free diagnosis and estimate for repair. No one here has any real idea of how much a hard drive replacement would actually cost, either.
Take your computer in and get a real diagnosis. Don't rely on a phone conversation - you really can't do diagnosis on the phone.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
