How much space on the hard/flash drive does the Operating System use on the macbook

I Would like to buy a MacBook but the actual space on the flash hard drive is quite minimal. How much of this small space does the operating system use?

In order for Yosemite needs to have at least 10 GB of free space for the use of OS X and the things it does. If you have less then that the performance with start to degrade until eventually OS X will freeze up.
If you think you will be getting close to that you might want to consider getting and external disk drive where you can store some of your file such as music, videos movies and photos.

  • How do I get my iTunes back after doing a operating system restore?

I recently had to restore my operating system and redownload iTunes. All of my music files were backed up but I was wondering if there was a way to restore my entire iTunes library instead of tediously add files and folders to library? And will this using a new iTunes effect my iPhone in any way? Thanks for help!

Ideally you would have backed up your entire user folder before resting the operating system so that you would ahve access to all the data & documents from your old system. If you have the complete iTunes folder backed up restore it to <User>/Music/iTunes before you install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes and have an empty there their delete that first before restoring the original. If you only backed up the media then, you will have to import this into a new library and you run the risk of losing information from your iPhone. See  Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for details and workarounds.

  • How much space to backup my mac mini

My mac mini was running on 512 GB's
    I've increased to 2GB
How much space do I need to do a full backup before upgrading?
I thought  2GB usb would be enough, but I obviously figured wrong....
    advice?

"Backup" requires as much space on your Hard Disk Drive (and NOT your RAM Memory).
Your HDD is probably something like 80GB? 120GB? 250GB? 500GB? - depending on how old it is, and if the hard disc has been upgraded.
Select your hard disc drive (top right of your desktop? - often called "Macintosh HD") and in the Finder go "File:Get Info...."
What does it say under "Capacity"?
And you won't be able to backup to a USB stick - not big enough!  You'll need an external hard disc drive, like this:

  • How much space does JNI_CreateJavaVM

Many of us who try to intialize Java inside another processes address space find problem with space, e.g., we get inexplicable ENOMEM's returned from the JNI_CreateJavaVM call. Apparently, the problem is that the VM needs contiguous address space. But, how does it determine how much it needs?
Consider the solution in [S. Carlson's post|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5403763&tstart=0] . This solution looks for a contiguous block of memory large enough to hold the Permanent Generation (+-XX:MaxPermSpace+) space and the maximum heap (+-Xmx+) space. But it doesn't work. I'm guessing this is because the VM wants to put other stuff into that address space. My question is: What? And how do I decide how much space it wants?
Conversely: What would happen if I iterate over the CreateJavaVM call, reducing the space requirement, until it worked? Would that work? I intend to try it, but I'm hoping somebody might tell me if it's a good idea before I waste my time.

I intend to try it, but I'm hoping somebody might tell me if it's a good idea before I waste my time. That won't work because CreateJavaVM sets a flag that indicates whether or not the vm creation can be re-attempted. In the case of ENOMEM, it cannot. The second attempt to call CreateJavaVM will return -1.

  • How do find out how much space I have in iCloud? How do I see what I have there? How do I see how much a pay for it?

It is probably easy but ...
    (1) If I want to see my account, how much do I pay each year, how much space do I have for storage what link do I use ... everything goes to support and explanations ...
    (2) How do I access iCloud Storage? What if I need more?
    (3) What is the difference between iWork and iCloud
    (4) I am worry about security with everything moving to iCloud ...
How can I control the security of my contacts, back up space, etc.

Go to System Preferences>iCloud - there is an indicator at the bottom of the pane showing how much of your storage you are using.
The basic account of 5GB is free. Additional storage for Backup, Documents etc: additional 10GB, $20 p.a., 20 GB, $40 p.a., 50GB $100 p.a. (note that this is not iDisk-type storage for any type of file).
iWork is a set of three programs available in Mac and iOS versions - Pages, Numbers and Keynote. iwork.com was an online storage for posting iWork documents - it's closed and its functions superceded by iCloud.
Your iCloud account is as secure as your password, so make sure it's a strong one - at least 8 characters (12 is better), one of which must be lower case, one upper case and one a numeral (no odd characters), and not your birthday, dog's name, or 'password'!

  • How do I find how much space specific documents, applications, music files, etc. are taking up on my hard drive?

I checked out my hard drive and found it is getting rather full.  Disk Utilities gives me an overall picture of how much disk space is being used and how much remains, but I'd like to find out which individual files may be hogging space.  The Finder window doesn't give that individual information.  I can find out how much space each item takes by clicking info on each, but there must be a more efficient way of finding this information simply by clicking on folders.

Not free but this is one option.

  • How do I see a detailed view of what's on my hard drive and how much space it's consuming?

I have an early 2007 iMac (3GB RAM) and a 320 GB hard drive.  I'm trying to clear some of the programs and files I don't need to free up space, but I'm not sure how to get a similar look at my files and how much space they take up individually (as I would with a PC).  Under system info I'm able to get the high-level overview, but how do I see a detailed view that I can then edit?

Thanks for your help.  I did just that and was able to get a much better view with OmniDiskSweeper.  I was shocked to find that my MobileSync files were 125 GB of about 270 being used!  Guess I shouldn't be surprised with 4 iPhones and 4 iPads syncing to the same iMac at one time or another -- just kind of surprised Apple/iTunes doesn't make it any clearer that this can turn into a big problem if you don't initially create the appropriate backup settings for your devices.  Thanks again!

Locate iPhoto Library (the default location is <~/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Library>), select it, and choose File > Get Info.

Open any folder on it and choose Show Status Bar from the Finder’s View menu.
Alternatively, choose Computer from the Go menu, control-click the drive, and choose Get Info.

    Hi guys,
can someone tell me please how much space is occupied by Mountain Lion on hd? I whould like to buy a new Hybrid hd but it has only 8 Gb of nand flah memory.
I fear that operating system will be divided on both hd partitions (ssd and serial ata 5400 rpm.)... Someone have some experience with hybrid storage?
    Thanks a lot

Then you don't want that model. You want the Momentus XT500 which is a 7200 RPM drive. For example, Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ...

How do i find out how much space i have left on my computer?

Disk space can now be seen in the "About This Mac" window. Click on the Apple icon, select About This Mac then click More Info... There you will find a Storage tab that will list all connected drives in a bar graph similar to how storage is displayed in iTunes for iOS devices.

The file name only has 6 characters and I'm not sure what the .mod format is. So that's why they are not seen by the iPad.
Another way to transfer. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • How much space left for the new System Restore Point(s) creation ??

    Sir,
    MY LAPTOP : single OS, windows 7 sp1 , ultimate 64 , 2gb ram , 4ghz processor,
    kaspersky antivirus full,
    total hard disk 150gb, C: 38.9gb,  11.2 gb free space on C: ,
allocation for SR Points for C: 2.73gb (7%)
    PROBLEM:(SR Point: System Restore Point)
sir, i am facing a problem of false reporting of the space occupied by a SR Point and so, it is unable to know how much space is left for new SR Points such that the old ones dont get eliminated. Here it is always increasing as the time progresses
        1. I created a SR Point at 9:21PM space occupied being shown 114.97mb
       2. The same SR point showing the space occupied at 9:23pm 115.06mb
       3. After 20 hours it is being shown as 272.36mb !
       4. After sometime ,it would show the space (occupied) even more than the actual allocation for eg.
the full allocation is 2.73gb and it will show 3.1gb occupied by the same single SR Point
[for solution of the problem i am managing the single SR Point that is by not doing anything that will     trigger the creation of new SR Point(s) ]
SNAP 1 : plz see only one SR Point is there on c:(the other one is system image back up on another drive)
SNAP 2 : Plz see that the space occupied by the same single SR Point is 276.50 mb which was 114.97 mb initially.SORRY , ONLY TWO IMAGES ALLOWED!
HISTORY : since last 6 months the laptop is with me and when I received it, system protection was off. When I made it active , it used to create SR points very frequently for e.g. 10 points in 2 days. So I stopped its automatic creation
2 months back. I disabled  both the triggers and the task.
SNAP 3 : both the triggers and task disabled.
    NOW
(.) it makes restore points either manually (by me) or by system in the case of install or updates only,
And I am comfortable with it !
(.) SR Point restore is full success !
(.) but the PROBLEM is there !
    So,
Is something wrong going to happen to the hard disk ?
Is it a malicious  activity ?
Does a full defragmentation for a drive deletes all the restore points on the drive ? (it happens here!)
    How should I proceed ?
