How much space to partition off?

Okay so I got VMWare and Windows off my Mac and am setting it back up via Boot Camp. But how much space do you think I should partition off? I'm going to be gaming and the one game by itself takes up about 3GB. I have one or two more I'd like to put on and sometimes I like to try new things so I might add something else. I'll also be putting on Norton and Office and maybe Yahoo! Instant Messenger so I can talk to people while I'm on Windows.
If I put 75GB on Windows, that leaves me with 222GB on the Mac side with 186GB of that being free. Is that overkill or should I bump it up to 100GB and leave 197GB for the Mac side with 161GB free?

If you later want to install Windows 7 or something you want to use NTFS; you want room for restore points, temp files and such.
I've reached this point but I'm really confused. Someone told me that I could just fall Boot Camp's instructions and I'd be fine so I started but now I'm lost. The first thing that confused me was what Partition to pick. There was Partition1, Partition2, Undefined Partition, and Partition3 (BOOT CAMP) so I clicked the one with Boot Camp in the name.
Then I was asked about this NTFS business and my boyfriend must not have gone through any of this before because he's not sure what it's for. I asked another person online and he said to do NTFS too but said that he's not sure what's coming up next, if I'll be able to do it on my own if I'm not sure what I'm doing. What's got me lost now is how he said that fat32 is outdated or something and when I looked at the screen, it said fat32. But I guess that means I'm formatting it so that it'll be NTFS afterwards?
I don't know if I should continue or not. If I do, does anyone know how much comes after this point? I've already selected Partition3 (BOOT CAMP) and NTFS...is that it? And then I just insert my Mac OS X disc for driver updates? Or will there be more after this? And if there is, should I just quit? >.<
Right now it's saying to press F if I want to format the partition.

  • [SOLVED] How much space is REALLY used on my HDD?

    Hi there,
Today I moved my /home/ dir to its own partition, so that my settings are safe from the system.
I have a question about the used space:
When I use "df -h" to see how much space is used, this is the output for home:
    /dev/sda2             184G  465M  175G   1% /home
So 465 MB should be used. When I right click on home and select properties only 243,5 MB are used!?
I know about the MB/MiB problem... but that would not be that extreme...
    Any ideas?
    greetings, yodo

It is used to store information about the filesystem structure. Inodes, Blocks, etc. Have a look at this c't article: http://www.heise.de/open/Das-Dateisyste … l/104859/0 (German article)

  • How much space left for the new System Restore Point(s) creation ??

    Sir,
    MY LAPTOP : single OS, windows 7 sp1 , ultimate 64 , 2gb ram , 4ghz processor,
    kaspersky antivirus full,
    total hard disk 150gb, C: 38.9gb,  11.2 gb free space on C: ,
allocation for SR Points for C: 2.73gb (7%)
    PROBLEM:(SR Point: System Restore Point)
sir, i am facing a problem of false reporting of the space occupied by a SR Point and so, it is unable to know how much space is left for new SR Points such that the old ones dont get eliminated. Here it is always increasing as the time progresses
        1. I created a SR Point at 9:21PM space occupied being shown 114.97mb
       2. The same SR point showing the space occupied at 9:23pm 115.06mb
       3. After 20 hours it is being shown as 272.36mb !
       4. After sometime ,it would show the space (occupied) even more than the actual allocation for eg.
the full allocation is 2.73gb and it will show 3.1gb occupied by the same single SR Point
[for solution of the problem i am managing the single SR Point that is by not doing anything that will     trigger the creation of new SR Point(s) ]
SNAP 1 : plz see only one SR Point is there on c:(the other one is system image back up on another drive)
SNAP 2 : Plz see that the space occupied by the same single SR Point is 276.50 mb which was 114.97 mb initially.SORRY , ONLY TWO IMAGES ALLOWED!
HISTORY : since last 6 months the laptop is with me and when I received it, system protection was off. When I made it active , it used to create SR points very frequently for e.g. 10 points in 2 days. So I stopped its automatic creation
2 months back. I disabled  both the triggers and the task.
SNAP 3 : both the triggers and task disabled.
    NOW
(.) it makes restore points either manually (by me) or by system in the case of install or updates only,
And I am comfortable with it !
(.) SR Point restore is full success !
(.) but the PROBLEM is there !
    So,
Is something wrong going to happen to the hard disk ?
Is it a malicious  activity ?
Does a full defragmentation for a drive deletes all the restore points on the drive ? (it happens here!)
    How should I proceed ?

  • Where do i find out how much space i have available on my computer

I have a macbook pro and was wondering how to find out how much space I have available.  I need to download pictures off my external drive to format it.

Many possibility. If you want to see, how the disk space is used, click the -menu and select "About this Mac".
In the "About" panel click "More Info".
Then you can explore your Mac. Click the "Storage" tab.
It will show you, how the disk space is used for photos, apps, etc. for all connected drives.

  • Bootcamp How Much space do i need

HI guys going to put Vista or XP on with bootcamp, how much space should i dedicate for windows to be comfortable.
    Tks guys

As much as you're comfortable with. By default Boot Camp creates a 32 GB partition. This is the largest partition you can have if you format it FAT. Larger partitions will require using NTFS. Since NTFS is read-only to OS X you may prefer using FAT to ease copying files to and from the OS X and Windows volumes.

  • How much space is required on C:\ when installing Illustrator CC on a different drive?

I have Creative Cloud > [Settings] > Preferences Apps > Installation Location set to a folder on a standard disk drive on my system that has oceans of space on it.  All of my Creative Cloud apps have installed just fine on it except for Illustrator CC.  Every time I try to install Illustrator CC I get an error message that says
"Insufficient disk space to extract files.  Please clear space on C:\ and try again.(EX10)
The problem here is that my C:\ is on an SSD so space on that dirve is kind of tight.  Even so, I started the process with more than 1GB of space free (if I had to guess I'd say 1.5GB) and now after the failure I have  539MB free.  How much space do I have to clear on C:\ to get my illustrator CC installation to actually work?

Ah, yes, that's a good tip and basically did the trick for me.  I had already moved my other standard folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.) off my C: long ago so I should have thought of moving Temp as well.  The one detail that took me a couple of tries to sort out, however, was that redefining %TEMP% doesn't actually help because (apparently) the Illustrator CC installation does not use it at all.  You really just need to redefine %TMP% and then it will work.
Over the course of events I ended up restarting my system between redefining %TMP% and successfully installing Illustrator CC.  I don't know if that's absolutely necessary, but it worked for me.
For the record, during the installation process I occasionally checked the size of the directory I used for %TMP%.  The value fluctuated more than I thought it would, but the highest value I saw was 4.5GB while the installer was extracting whatever files it needed from the download.  I think that represents some sort of lower bound on the minimum size you would need on C: if you didn't want to monkey around with the dark arts of environment variables.
    Thanks for your help!
        See ya,

  • How much should I partition for Time Machine/Backup?

    Hi all,
I upgraded my PB G4 HD to a 160GB recently and have just purchased a 1TB External HD. How much should I partition in the external to be used for Time Machine backup purposes of my internal HD? Will the same size suffice, or should I allocate more?
Also, I was thinking of formatting the drive so that it's both Windows and OS X friendly, but that means formatting it to MS-DOS something (I was just reading about it in another thread), will that cause any issues for the partition for Time Machine that I created? Thanks.

That's not practical. If you want to use the hard drive on a Windows machin while still being useful for Time Machine you should use MacDrive.

I would make the partition at least twice the size of the internal drive. Preferably, you would want 50 GB for a Leopard install that includes just the base operating system so you can boot off the 50 GB to recover your Time Machine data if your Leopard installer disc ever becomes unusable.
Also since you have a Powerbook, your 1 TB hard drive should be Firewire. USB will not boot Powerbooks. If it is USB only, you can remove the external hard drive case and replace it with one compatible with the drive inside that case from http://www.macsales.com/ that has Firewire.

  • PROBLEMS WITH HOW MUCH SPACE IS ACTUALLY BEING USED

    Hello,
I've just recently purchased a Toshiba Dual Core laptop (225 gigs + 3 gig memory.) It works pretty well, but I've had to reload the windows and programs again. The reason is that after reloading I have about 203 gigs of space, but then I install flash CS3 (550 mgs and photoshop 200+) After I've installed all the doc files and everything I end up with about 200 gigs of space which is great. However, I've unistalled norton and installed AVG Professional. My space amount has gone down from 200 to about 193 gigs. I don't get it; it doesn't make sense because this is isn't how much space I've actually used. I've deleted temp files and all the install files of these other programs and what's even more crazy is that when I go ahead and run scan disk to deleted unecessary files, my space goes down in size and it shows that I have even less space! Has anyone else run into this problem? Let me know, perhaps there's a solution.
    Thanks,
    Tseyigai

How much space would be reasonable for me to cut back on?
I've set the shadow storage on the computers around here to 10 GB. Suit yourself.
You can save quite a bit of hard drive space by turning hibernation off. Check the size of that file. It's c:\hiberfil.sys.
And look through the stuff Disk Cleanup cites for more savings.
But if you really can't get along without more space, you should add external drives or upgrade this one.

  • How much shall i partition macbook drive? 32gb option query......

hi, i plan to use bootcamp and windows xp.
the 32gb partition option, does this mean when i install apps into windows xp, i have a limit of 32gb??? or can i install programmes say up to 100gb????
my programme files folder in my pc is way over 50gb.
would i need to partition my mac drive to half half?
i have 250gb internal macbook drive.
basically i want to be able to install apps and data to use in windows xp apps, which would amount to well over 50gb.
what does the 32gb partition actually mean??? is this just for windows system files?? or for ALL things windows, eg, my documents, apps data etc.
    thankyou.

You can leave a small minimum for OS X which can always be booted from USB or Firewire. And use external drive for additional space, but once set, you are sort of stuck with that without doing backups and restore.
WinClone can image Windows for restore back if needed.
    http://www.twocanoes.com
Apple Disk Utility -> Restore can copy OS X to/from another drive also.
Too often people underestimate how much space they need.
And if you want to use NTFS, you will need to delete + create FAT volume or use convert command.
The only reason for 32GB was PC Windows, there is no reason to use it today on Mac or any other size, make it what you want and need, as long as there is free unfragmented space. If you perform installs and updates on OS X, then files will get moved into that free space just from unpacking and installing. The only way to reclaim that space is through backup and restore or 3rd party program like iDefrag.
BootCamp Assistant Setup "offers" splitting a drive in half but you can drag it to any size configuration.

  • How do I find how much space specific documents, applications, music files, etc. are taking up on my hard drive?

I checked out my hard drive and found it is getting rather full.  Disk Utilities gives me an overall picture of how much disk space is being used and how much remains, but I'd like to find out which individual files may be hogging space.  The Finder window doesn't give that individual information.  I can find out how much space each item takes by clicking info on each, but there must be a more efficient way of finding this information simply by clicking on folders.

Not free but this is one option.

  • How do I see a detailed view of what's on my hard drive and how much space it's consuming?

I have an early 2007 iMac (3GB RAM) and a 320 GB hard drive.  I'm trying to clear some of the programs and files I don't need to free up space, but I'm not sure how to get a similar look at my files and how much space they take up individually (as I would with a PC).  Under system info I'm able to get the high-level overview, but how do I see a detailed view that I can then edit?

Thanks for your help.  I did just that and was able to get a much better view with OmniDiskSweeper.  I was shocked to find that my MobileSync files were 125 GB of about 270 being used!  Guess I shouldn't be surprised with 4 iPhones and 4 iPads syncing to the same iMac at one time or another -- just kind of surprised Apple/iTunes doesn't make it any clearer that this can turn into a big problem if you don't initially create the appropriate backup settings for your devices.  Thanks again!
