Few thoughts:
There is a minuscule possibility that you can successfully convince the Genius that the damage was not due to abuse or mishandling. And if it is still under warranty, a new free screen will be yours. Don't get your hopes up too high, though...
If a Retina, the cost will be so high that maybe selling it for parts and getting a new one might be a better idea.
Same may apply if it is very old. Not cause the screen costs arm+leg, but because you will be sinking lots of cash onto a sinking ship.

Broken Macbook Pro Screen

So my Macbook Pro screen broke today. The laptop has Applecare and I was just wondering if Applecare covers any part of it? With my IBM Thinkpad T41, the screen broke and IBM paid for half of the $500 repair fee, does apple do anything like that? How much would it be to replace the screen?

If you must know how I broke two laptop screens, I take my laptop everywhere, I mean everywhere. I am a photographer (I use a Canon 30D if anyone is wondering), as for my Macbook Pro, the screen breaking was the result of me hiking up a rather steep hill, loosing my footing with my laptop in my laptop backpack. The backpack is well padded (Crumpler) but my camera with lens still attached and me falling, isn't too great for a laptop screen. The superdrive was also damaged and there is a nice dent in the bottom.
The T41 was in a Targus black laptop case, loading a bunch of stuff into my vehicle, left it on the black asphalt, never noticed that I didn't load it into the vehicle, backed up, and you can imagine what happened. Surprising, the casing of the laptop was still fine, didn't even look like it was ran over. Still worked too, I needed an external monitor though

Hi there! I have used Macbook Pro for 4 months, and now there are much duty inside my Macbook Pro's Screen. Can I exchange another one for my screen, you know, there are much much screen, so that is not very comfortable for me now.
P.S: I really don't know how the duty can access inside to my MBP's screen? :-?

I have the same problem - there are these "dark patches" that sort of look like someone smudged the inside of the screen. I noticed this since I bought my computer, but I waited to bring it in because I thought it might go away or might be able to be cleaned. Also, I've been away at school so it hasn't been convenient.
In any case, I just brought it into a local Apple Retail Store to have it looked at, and they told me it is "damage" resulting from pressure applied to the back of the screen. In the end, they told me that because I waited as long as I did to have it looked at, my AppleCare Protection Plan, which doesn't expire until JUNE 2010 will NOT cover the $1249 repair that they estimated.
I am extremely careful not to pick up my laptop with one hand or in any way that applies hard pressure to the screen; I am surprised that the people I talked to wouldn't elect to send my laptop into repair. I am also very disappointed that my $250+ AppleCare Protection Plan is evidently useless.
Anyone else have any ideas or experience in similar matters or likewise?

I have a 13" Early 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5, Memory - 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384MB.
I have been having problems with chargers braking and my battery is now in "Replace Soon" condition, but I have no Applecare left.
I'm just wondering where/how to get a new battery, if I can do it myself for cheaper or if it is recommended to take it into an Applestore.
I mainly just want to get it sorted A. to see if its been slow all this time purely because of the battery, B. to sell it on as I am returning to buying a PC, as I miss gaming.
Anyone with any info to help is much appreciated!

They do not re-test the capabilities when newer, higher capacity chips become available. Outside companies and RAM suppliers test the units with higher RAM capacities, thus the confusing total RAM capabilities.

Time Machine backup disks should be external ... separate from the computer.
Several places sell external disks that are already formatted for Mac. Others tell you that external disks not formatted for Mac can be reforatted, but save yourself the grief for now and buy Mac-ready.
Buy a *new* disk, in my opinion. Do not reuse an old disk.
Some can suggest certain brand names as "better", but even the best disk-brand will have bad apples in the mix.
If any others have a convenient link for Time Machine Tutorial, please provide. I have learned enough alreay, generally through trial and error on my own.
But focus on getting that first backup done within the next 2 days.
As to "probably need a new HD", perhaps you can move enough off to an external disk. Cross that bridge after you get the backup.
If you get the sense that critical things are done first and that you should save yourself complex things like "how to replace a harddisk" for later, you are reading my posts correctly.

Read the forum posts, Google the issue, watch the YouTube videos on the problems; they are everywhere. I purchased a 2012 Retina MacBook Pro and the screen is riddled with dead pixels, white ghosting throughout, and image retention issues, all from a company that promotes the quality of the product they sell. There's no way this issue facing so many consumers shouldn't result in Apple replacing these screens for FREE.
I purchased the high-end machine for photo and video editing. Photo editing is particularly difficult when I can't tell if I have dust, dirt or colour shifts in my images or if it's just the screen overlaying these issues. I've never had so many issues with any screen I've purchased, from my Panasonic Plasma TV to my cheap ACER laptop. Please Apple, quit ignoring this issue.

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13 inch w/glossy screen, and somehow, what appears to be dust specks have gotten between the LCD and the plastic cover/casing that's over it. There are only a few of them, but they are extremely annoying because I can see them. My computer has never been in a dusty place, so I'm at a loss to explain this, and I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem, and what (if any) solution there is.

The italicized part is the hard part — maddeningly hard, even for a capable technician. I suspect this is precisely the reason why Apple never disassembles the display, but replaces the entire assembly as a unit.
