Hi everyone.
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) that has been crashing regularly. I ran Apple diagnostics and have a fault - 4hdd/11/4000000:sata(0,0). I recognise that I will have to replace the SSD, but sadly, it is out of warranty. I am planning to book an appointment with the Genius Bar in London, but before I go, I would very much like to know how much it will cost to replace the 512gb SSD in the UK.
Any advice appreciated.

I brought it into Apple and had it looked at. The response was that I had three options.
1. Pay Apple $1,200 for a new case and assembly
2. Send case to China, lose the Mac for 2 weeks and pay $600 to replace the case
3. Accept the damage and consider it to be having "added character" to the Macbook.
I chose the latter of the three options and haven't looked back since. I actually have a story to tell with my Mac and a good laugh.
My recommendation however to anyone reading this would be to review if the damage is cosmetic (which mine is) or if it's functional damage. In my case, as I'm a photographer and this was my very first Mac, I wanted it to remain in perfect condition for as long as possible. That being said, I now see the construction of the device to be absolutely amazing. The design and unibody construction protected the Mac from shattering the glass. If this had been any other laptop device I am positive that the damage would have been functional in nature and I would have been spending money to resolve the issue.
The only thing that I ended up getting rid of was my backpack. I now use a breifcase from Saddleback Leather Company. The combination of the two have made me far happier.

If you want to add an SSD it must be an external SSD. There is no space in the retina macbook Pro to put an additional SSD. The retina already has a flash drive.

At this time just the Apple stores in the US are doing in-store repairs on iPhone 5-series...the screen is $149. You will have to contact the Apple store there and see if they're doing repairs yet.

I'm in the market for a new Macbook Pro, thus I'm looking to sell my old one. It's a 2006 model, and it has a few dents and scratches as a result of frequent use and carrying it around.
Processor = 2 GHz Intel Core Duo
Memory = 2 GB
Hard Drive = 500 GB
It's fully operational, runs smoothly and everything, but there are two main flaws: Number one, the battery has died, so it only works when the charger is plugged in. I can easily replace the battery, though. The other problem is that the motherboard is acting a bit weird. Every now and then the computer will completely freeze up, forcing a restart. This is the main reason I'm in the market for a new one.
With all of this being said, can anyone give an estimate on how much I should expect for it? The motherboard issue is the main flaw, so I'm not expecting to be able to sell it for some crazy amount. Maybe someone can use it for parts or something. Any estimates? Thanks.

Apple has their recycle deal through PowerON Services, and BestBuy will give you an estimate online (you get the most if you take a gift card, less if you want a check). Since both are looking to make a profit off of the recycled machines, you'll get less than a private sale, but for an older parts machine, maybe not that much less.
My 5 year old powerbook G4, which does still work fine, has a still mildly useful battery and is very good cosmetically was only worth about $164 according to the BestBuy site (which I was actually pleasantly surprised about, since I figured it was only worth about half that).

After many months of indecision I finally made up my mind to experiments the delights of SSD.
I bought an OCZ Vertex 2E 120gb 2.5 sata II, and I am waiting for it to arrive.
In the meantime, in spite of an almost endless googling I could not find a definitive answer to this question:
After you physically install the SSD, and booting from Snow Leo DVD, what should I do to prime the drive? For HDD it is good practice to zero out data, but what about SSDs? Should I zero out data or is it better to perform a fast format? Some sites say zeroing out data can ruin the SSD or that it is counterproductive because of Mac OS x absence of TRIM support (i.e. by zeroing out data I would basically fill the drive, something that I should not really be looking forward to with an SSD).
Could someone please help on this?
Also, final question: should I upgrade the SSD firmware to the latest version before installing or not?

BTW: I have a late 2008 2.4GHZ unibody macbook pro 15.4 inches with 4gb of RAM and I am planning to install Snow Leo 10.6.1 and update it straightaway to 10.6.4.

I would recommend that you do a carbon copy clone from your old drive to the SSD by an external hard drive mounter.
It is very simple to physically change. The only things you'll need from the old drive are the 4 pins that help mount the drive. Once the pins are taken off by unscrewing (I just used a pair of needle nose pliers) and place on the SSD you'll just mount the new drive in place of the old HD.
Once everything is back in order (replace back covers) reboot and goto System Preferences and choose Startup DIsk icon, if you don't do this your SSD will boot very slowly just like the first time you powered up the SSD. Once SSD is chosen as the startup disk it will boot fast. Enjoy

I had a problem today as my computer would not save a file for me. A box stated macintosh HD was full and I would need to clear some files to make room.
