  • I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I have a very limited amount of wifi data, and I am exceeding my monthly allowance. Apparently, even apps I think are not open are sending/receiving data through the wifi and using up my allowance.

I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I am on a very limited amount of WiFi data each month, which I am regularly exceeding. I have been told to work out which of my apps is using the data. Also, I think I have closed an app by double clicking the home button, then swiping the app up - is this the way to close it, or will it still be sending/receiving data?

Go into your Settings : General : and turn off background refresh for your apps.  In Settings : Mail  turn Fetch new data to OFF and Load Remote Images to OFF.  This will mean that Mail will only check for messages when you actually use it, and all your advertising junk mail won't have all the images in it.
Turn off push notifications every chance you get.
Make sure you are actually quitting apps:  to quit apps press the Home button twice and you should see a bunch of smaller screen images for every open app.  To quit the app swipe from the screen image (not the icon) upward off the top of the iPad.  You can swipe left and right to see more open apps, but there must be no left-right movement on the screen when you swipe upward to close the app.
Turn off your internet connection when you do not need it.  The easiest way to do this is to swipe up from the bottom of you screen to get the control centre, and then touch the airplane to turn on airplane mode.  You can repeat this sequence to turn it back on again when you need it.  Most especially turn airplane mode on whenever you are sleeping your iPad for long periods.  This will save battery life too.  OR actually turn your iPad off - which means holding the power key down for several seconds until the red swipe bar appears, and then swipe to turn it off.  If you go this route, note that it will take longer to turn on then it takes to wake from sleep.

  • TS4006 I lost my iphone in Guatemala City and just downloaded the Find My iPhone app to my MacBook Pro. How do I launch the app & locate my phone?

I lost my iphone in Guatemala City and just downloaded the Find My iPhone app to my MacBook Pro. How do I launch the app & locate my phone?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

  • How much data will an app like "Nike+ GPS" use if I jog for an hour?

This app is for runners to keep track of where and how far you went throughout a jog. If I'm jogging with my iphone4s for an hour, how much data will be consumed?

To my understanding of Nike+, it will keep all the data on your phone until you select to send it too the Nike+ website (Settings> Nike+> Send to Nike+). Or atleast that's how it's been working whenever I use it.

  • How much RAM for ONE App & does OS X limit allocation?

    Hello all,
This question concerns how much RAM I realistically need to run ONE application to it's fullest. I mainly use ProToolsLE 7.3, but sometimes use LogicPro 8 and Final Cut Express 4, again, only one running at a time. I've read on the ProTools forum that Windows (yuck) limits the amount of RAM that can be allocated for 1 application. Does Mac OS 10.4 or 10.5 do this?
Right now I have the stock 1GB (2 x 512MB). I plan on pulling it and installing a matched quad of either 1GB sticks (4GB total) -OR- 2GB sticks (8GB total). I understand that matched quads in slots 1/2 of both risers is optimum for the early Mac Pros.
The ProTools forum isn't helping much. A ProTools support person said that starting with 4GB will be good to start and that they test their systems with 4GB installed. What did they mean by "good to start"? Will it increase jumping to 8GB or is 4GB all ProTools can really use?
Another guy on there said "keep in mind that to use 4GB of ram - you'd need a 64bit Operating system (not supported by pro-tools) or on a MAC PAE support enabled, which depending on your hardware may not be a great move." I dont know what that means! Mac OS 10.5 IS a 64bit OS, right? And ProTools 7.4 NEEDS OS 10.5 to run....even if it is only a 32bit app. (though right now I am running PT 7.3 on OS 10.4....not sure if 10.4 is 64bit)
A quad set of 1GB is under $170 and a quad set of 2GB is under $270. Funds are tight right now, but I think I can swing the extra $100 to double the RAM -IF- it will make a difference.
Any thoughts as to wether the extra $100 will be worth it, or am I wasting my money? Thanks!

    Hatter,
Thank you so much for your advice! If I may bother you to receive one final suggestion....
Based on the best prices I have found from all of the well known Mac Pro memory dealers, I have narrowed it down to 3 configurations that are balanced. Even though I'm still not 100% confident that 8GB of RAM will give me any noticable imporvement over 6GB, the price is only $42 more to get 8GB. Am I correct in saying that the early Mac Pro would do better to have one matched quad set of RAM over the new Mac Pro's increased performance of having all eight slots filled? Here are the 3 configurations and prices.
    4 x 1GB + 4 x 512MB = 6GB Quad+Quad $220 (using my stock 2x512MB sticks)
    4 x 2GB = 8GB Quad $262 (pulling my stock 2x512MB sticks)
    8 x 1GB = 8GB Octal $278 (pulling my stock 2x512MB sticks)
Which do you think would be the best route?
I already purchased a WD Caviar for my dedicated audio drive. I installed a Seagate 7200.9 in my PowerMac G4 for it's audio drive, but after reading various reveiws, concluded the WD Caviar is a better performer. I LOVE my WD My Book Studio external. I hadn't considered replacing the boot drive, but after reading articles suggesting that it improves overall system performance, and now that you've recommended it as well, I will probably buy a second Caviar for the boot/system drive.
This computer is a DEDICATED audio computer, for ProTools & Logic only....other than a bit of fiddling in Final Cut Express. It's not even connected to the internet and all unnecessary apps are not installed or uninstalled. I also never migrate apps, but always do a fresh install of everything from the ground up.
Thanks again for your advice! It's been a big help!

  • How much space used by App + Data

Is there any way to determine how much space is used by each app including it's data?
I have estimated how much space my apps should be occupying and it's 2 GB less that what iTunes shows. I can only assume that one ore more of my apps is taking up much more space that I think it would. I do have an app that is storing lots of photos. After estimating the total size based on the size and number of photos and talking to the developer it does not account for the missing space. The best thing is to actually see true app sizes with their data but I can't figure out how.
    Thanks

    HI Steve,
I do have an app that is storing lots of photos.
Something to keep in mind when syncing photos. When syncing photos to iPad, iTunes automatically creates a size optimized for iPad, if necessary. See “Syncing with iTunes” on page 28 from the iPad online user guide available here.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPad_UserGuide.pdf
That could make a difference in the space available on your iPad.
The best thing is to actually see true app sizes with their data but I can't figure out how.
Try resizing images on your computer first, then sync to iPad. If you are PC / Windows, help here:

  • HT201359 How much VAT/Mehrwertsteuer in App Store?

How much VAT do I pay on App Store (iOS) store purchases in Europe (German store)?
I'm writing off work related expenses, so it's important to know how much VAT and where that tax is paid (Ireland?).
Wieviel Mehrwertsteuer zahlt man im deutschen App Store (iOS) und wo (Irland/Deutschland?)

    capercailzie wrote:
......in Germany you cannot write the VAT off (you can only do this with VAT levied IN Germany)........
Is that right that you can't claim back VAT from another EC location, I believe we can here in the UK and it seems strange we aren't all bound by the same rules.

  • How much OS X and apps can I delete?

I'm trying to find out what and how I can delete as much as possible from my eMac so I can use it for Garage Band and internet only. I deleted most of the language files already. I'm trying to create as much space as I can so I can use it for just recording and surfing the net for music and video. I also want to keep Itunes. I would like to get rid of things like the mail, and whatever else is possible to get rid of so It will run faster and perform better for recording. Is this possible or even a good idea? Thanks.

    Hi Robbie,
Short of time today but I'll hit the high spots:
Is "USB 2.0" another name for PowerMac6,4?
Yes. In addition to USB2 ports, the 6,4's have a faster bus (167 v 133 mhz) and will handle 2GB RAM.
    Non-cataloged? I don't know what that means.
It means Apple never showed it in its regular retail line. It was made especially for the education market and sold only through Educational resellers and directly to schools. All it means was that Apple sold it to a school who eventually spun it off on the used market (assuming you got it used).
What is the best most updated OS that I could put on this eMac?
OS 10.5.8, If you call Apple an tell them you have a new iPad that needs 10.5, they may sell you a copy cheap. You need to use the 1-800-MY-APPLE number---it's not on the web store or in the retail outlets.
How good is this computer overall and compared to all other eMacs?
IMHO, it's the first of the "better" eMacs. The USB 1.1 eMacs struggle today. A fair number o the USB2.0s are still chugging along because they can run 10.5.8 better. The best is the last--the 1.42G. No history of problems and has a nicer video chipset that better supports the video technology in OS 10.5. Ours almost runs YouTube contents without the hacks (see next section)
I read that most or all video players, like Flash players, won't work anymore. I'm even having trouble with youtube. Is there a player that will work for video on Facebook that you know of, because Flashplayer doesn't  update the version anymore?
Pretty much true as Adobe abandoned the PowerPC Mac not long after Apple did. I'm not the expert on that. Look in the PowerMac forum for posts by Texas Mac Man. He routinely posts links to some third-party workabouts that help with Flash content,
If I get the discs and redo everything, I'm thinking I could delete the languages after that. Is there any other useless stuff I can get rid of?
Printer support can go. Only install software for the printer you have.
What's keychain and airport, and do I need them?
Keychain is a built-in password manager that's been around since OS9. It is neither a RAM nor hard drive hog. Airport is Apple name for their wireless communication technology. They have a router called and Airport base Station and many Macs have a wireless card built in that is called, well, an "Airport card." Again, the software support for these is not a hog--I'd leave both alone. If your eMac has a wireless card installed, you need the Airport software. You can connect to any wireless router, not just the Apple ones, with that software if you have the card installed.
I have strong thoughts on the external drive issue. You can choose one that works well for this Mac plus will make the jump to a newer one if you upgrade. Will need to do that later today-sorry.
    See ya!

  • How much data does the apple maps app use per hour ?

    hello,
i would like to know, if somebody could give me a rough number of how much the Apple Maps app uses per hour for navigation ?

Apple's Maps app uses vector graphics, so it doesn't have to download data everytime your view changes, & also has an offline mode...you can download quite a large area over WiFi & then use this cache to navigate.
So, I really wouldn't worry too much about its data usage. Most tests I've read indicate it uses about 80% less data than Google Maps.
