How much will a SSD drive speed up aperture

i am a little frustrated with aperture's speed....in general...plenty of spinning beachballs....retouch tool pretty much unuseable....i am not worried about import/export, but mostly interface, tools.....i understand that working on a mbp is not the ideal situation, but it should at least be as fast as cs3 or LR....
the latest SSD drives are still expensive as ****, but at least offer amazing speeds (read and writes) and are finally large enough....considering that the slowdown with aperture is probably the HD, a SSD should speed things up quite a bit? any input on this, experience? i am looking at the ocz vertex or apex 250gb drives....

where is the aperture library located? on the mbp? or external drive? what's the headroom (empty space) on your drives?

maybe, maybe not. it depends on a lot of factors, maintenance, headroom on all drives (empty space), ram, graphic card, cable accessing external drive. you can have a fancy drive and you would still have to maintain your system

  • How much will more RAM speed up my iBook?

I am looking to upgrade my RAM.
I know that speed is a multi-factor question. I need to know what's important and what pitfalls to avoid.
    I have an 12" iBook G4, 1.2GHz, 512 RAM (256 card, 256 internal). I recently installed a 120.0GB Western Digital "Scorpio" 5400RPM 9.5MM SuperSlim Notebook Drive with 8MB Data buffer.
I am choosing between a 512 or 1g RAM upgrade. My questions are:
    1) How much will this speed up my computer? 2) Is the 1g really twice as fast? 3) with my specs?
I read a post where some poor cat had upgraded RAM, but didn't feel the difference in iPhoto.
My specs read pc2100 (pc2700 compatible). Will my specific machine work faster with pc2700? Comptick (which has an awesome battery price) has a 1g RAM upgrade for $189, which is pc2100. Apple's $300 1g is pc2700.
What do I need to know about the bus rate so that I don't slow things up there?

    1) How much will this speed up my computer?
There is no way we can quantify this for you. It depends on your usage pattern (i.e. what application you use, how many applications open at a time, etc.).
    2) Is the 1g really twice as fast?
Most certainly the answer is no. If lack or RAM was causing delays in processing, adding more RAM will alleviate those delays and make your computing experience smoother and more enjoyable. But changing your RAM from 768 MB to 1.256 GB won't double the speed of your iBook.
    3) with my specs?
    ?? What is the question?
I read a post where some poor cat had upgraded RAM, but didn't feel the difference in iPhoto.
For the most part, iPhoto is disk intensive not RAM intensive. Therefore upgrading RAM will only improve certain aspects of iPhoto (such as photo editing).
Will my specific machine work faster with pc2700?
No, the PC2700 will operate at PC2100 speeds.
Current RAM prices from Mac knowledgeable vendors offering lifetime warranties can be found at RamSeeker.com and DealRam.com.
What do I need to know about the bus rate so that I don't slow things up there?
Nothing. Just buy PC2100 or PC2700 RAM and relax.

  • How Much Are For SSD cards or drives? (not sure what it's really called?)

I have a question, for my first time being a mac user and all. How much are the ssd cards/drives? I have a 4GB and 2.4 ghz macbook pro of 2010 early, it's a 13". I'm thinking about how I am going to be majoring in animation design in college and I'm worried that my laptop might LAG or slow down. (Will it? :S) I know I probably sound stupid right now and probably being laughed about with this question but it's my first mac laptop that I will taking to college class with me. Anyone can answer my question that would be great.
Two people have suggested that I return this 13" for a 15" but I just dont' have the budget for the 15" and plus the 13" is great and portable.
    What do you guys think?

How much are the ssd cards/drives?
Depends on the maker, the size and how fast their throughput is. Do a google search and compare prices
t's my first mac laptop that I will taking to college class with me.
SSDs are not exclusive to Macs. You would be asking the same questions if you were considering a windows based laptop with an SSD.
Two people have suggested that I return this 13" for a 15"
For animation, their suggestion is correct.

  • How much will it be to remove a memory chip out of the cd drive?

I was tired and I accidentally stuck my memory chip in my cd drive.
Because mac has no screws to actually take it apart...I guess I have to go to the store. Around how much will it be?

  • How long will an SSD last if I fill it up and erase it over and over?

Hello, I have a 120gb SSD that I am using to capture HDMI uncompressed footage with my blackmagic intensity card. Each recording is about 15 minutes, which takes up about 110 gbs. I record about 10 times a week, so about 10 times a week, I am filling up and erasing my SSD. Should I keep using my SSD, or should I just record to my RAID setup and just use SSDs for read purposes, and not write?

Capture to a TB drive why not? cheap, fast enough, and ample capacity. Or use your array.
120GB is small, they tend to perform slower.
Ah, you are using a 2006 plus Mavericks too.
As to how much can an SSD take, A LOT, like 500TB
    http://techreport.com/review/25889/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-500tb-update
As to your system, invest in a nice 256GB for the system.
Just learned - on MacRumors which is where I would think you would be - that the Samsung XP941 is bootable and works on every Mac, even our 1,1's. Just needs a $25 adapter. 1000MB/sec reads, and 700-800MB/sec writes when using 4x or 8x slot).
Aim for 50-75% use of an SSD though. And enable TRIM. Especially with all this going on. "Erase'' on an SSD is not the same as on a hdd, so I assume you are just reformatting and not really erasing (Apple terminology being what it is, when they use to still use "Initialize" in dialogues but had no such feature or command in Disk Utility).
Samsung 850 EVO 250 or even 1TB might interest you too.
Why are you not using your array?
You have quite a setup, GPU, upgraded processors (2,1 came with 8-core but not 1,1) and the 7970.

  • TS3274 I am thiking of buying iPad to use it at school. Can I open textbook withought using WiFi? How much will the Internet fee be?

I am thiking of buying iPad to use it at school.
Can I open textbook withought WiFi?
How much will the Internet fee be?

What is your grade level? Most (many?) schools at the secondary and college/university level have wifi, so if using it at school you would be set there and if you have wi-fi at home, you should be all set, there, too. Having cellular can be expensive for what you get in terms of space, and depending on where you live, you might want to do some research to see what your best options are.
    That said...
I had questions as soon as I read your post. Are all of your books available for ipad? Do you have a computer, because you'll need one, etc.(I know you're using one now...)  If you do, then the ipad could work for you. My younger son is starting his junior year in college and he's getting an ipad for convenience. But he has an imac in his dorm room, so he'll be set. He knows that's more important for productivity than an ipad, but loves the idea that he can bring it to class for notes, put them on his imac for editing in microsoft office and excel, upload files he needs from classes, etc.
I opened a thread to the right on this page to see if there was information re these questions, and there are. There are also many threads where people have your same questions, and many have very helpful answers. The only thing is it might be time consuming. You might have to go way back to read them. There are so many questions asked 24/7 that a new question on this site might be ten pages back in a matter of hours. I don't do it often, but I check them out and and I've gotten some very helpful info. Take notes and perhaps what you learn can help you make your decision.
One thing I would skip as an option would be a netbook. They crawl... class would be half over before you'd get to start your note taking, and they are not powerful at all and have limited space even if you max it out with a larger hard drive. We bought two for my sons to take notes in college and don't use them anymore.
If you let us know more about your school level, specific situation, and why you want 4g, hopefully people can possibly help you better. All the best as you make your decision!

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

  • My iphone 4s is over 2 years old and I need to replace the battery. How much will this cost at an Apple store?

I have an iphone 4s that is  over 2 years old. The phone's battery is no longer able to hold a  charge for an acceptable length of time.  Assuming I need to replace the battery, how much will this cost at an Apple store?

    graciebethgrant wrote:
Basically, I'm new to Apple, despite using them before, but I've never actually owned my own.
Since buying this phone off a colleague at work, I seem to be having problems with it. First, I noticed how rubbish the battery life is, then my charger almost went up in flames and thirdly my camera lense is scratched beyond belief.
I know the phone isn't within warranty, although I was lead to believe it was before and during buying it, so basically I'm extremely disappointed with the general make up of iPhone's considering they cost such a **** of a lot of money, you'd think they'd be built to last.
Back to my main point, how much would it cost for a new battery? Or a new camera lense if anyone can help me with that? (I know that the back of the phone was refurbished just before my buying it, so literally just the camera lense)
    Thanks!
So basically it sounds like you bought an abused used iPhone and somehow that makes the phone subpar because dispite the abuse it should still last forever and look like new? Batteries don't last forever, even under ideal conditions, so your expectatoins are unrealistic. Take it in and have an estimate done.

  • How much $$$ will Verizon charge me if I don't return the Fascinate after receiving replacement?

How much $$$ will Verizon charge me if I don't return the Fascinate after receiving replacement?
I spoke with customer service and couldn't get a real number.  She just said it "could be up to $500, or more"
to be determined after they don't receive it within the 5-day period.
Is there a way to find out for sure how much it's going to cost?
    Thanks!
    Here's the reason I'm asking:
I forgot to drop it off at FedEx on the way to the airport.  My entire family is now on an overseas trip and won't
be back for 8 weeks.   The Fascinate, packed in Verizon box with FedEx box, is now sitting in my car trunk at
the airport long-term parking lot.  I was supposed to stop by the FedEx office at the airport cargo area to drop
it off, but forgot about it during the rush....   (yes, I do realize it's a stupid mistake that may end up costing a
    lot of money)

No, you simply do not.  Apple does not sell insurance.
Apple offers an Extended Warranty called AppleCare.
Warranties doe not cover lost or stolen devices.  Buy a new one.
