2. Buy out the remainder of your current contract and possibly
      start a new contract with your current carrier with a new phone
      or go to another carrier.
3. Many other variations of trade/buy/sell depending on retailers.
If you are in the States, Target, BestBuy, and several others are running variety
of promotions on 5C's and 5S's. So you may want to pay a visit to a local
store to get details.

For anyone who's sent there ipod in to Apple for a battery replacement (I have a 5th gen.), how much did it cost? (not under warranty)

With the 5th Generation your chances of finding a responsible 3rd party to fix it are almost nil. Apple does not actually open the device and put a battery in it they just replace the whole unit.
You can buy a battery from someplace like http://www.ipodjuice.com and they will sell you tools and pictures of how to do it but that is the one model they will not do a battery replacement due to the time and difficulty involved.

If you're outside the USA you can't buy one where without coming here and getting it. Even then it is not a good idea because the warranty is only good in the USA.

It depends of the hard disk the iMac has got. For my iMac, the replacement hard disk cost 99€, so it's not expensive. If you want to save money and your iMac isn't covered by the warranty, you can replace it yourself using the iFixit steps. Offically, the warranty does not cover user-caused damage, so you may have to pay Apple's standard charge for the iPod to be replaced. That said, though, it's been reported that in some cases, an Apple Store has replaced a user-damaged iPod touch without charge even though they're not obgigated to do so. So if there's an Apple Store near you, take your iPod there, politely explain what happened, and hope they can do something for you.
If not, you'll need to pay their replacement charge or find a third-party repair service and see if you can get the repair for less.

It is going to be months before any unlocked iPhone 6s will be available.
Also be aware that the iPhone purchased in the USA will only have warranty service in the USA. Any warranty service will require you to bring it back to USA.

The way I read that comment – you seem to suggest the Mac was broken before the third party replaced the disk - is that the case or was it working before the HD was replaced?
Since the Mac is out of warranty you will have to pay for any repairs wherever you take it. Authorised Apple service centres will be able to get parts whereas any non certified technicians will have to use 'grey market' parts since Apple will not sell parts to the public. It could be that the disk is not formatted correctly.
Are you sure the tech copied an OS onto the disk? Did they install the OS for you or did they clone the old disk?
Can you boot from a backup disk or from an install disk? Does the disk appear in Disk Utility when booted from another OS (either the installer or a backup).
'Not booting' can mean so many things, what does booting do exactly? Grey screen, black screen, any noises or tones, any signs of life at all…?
If you look at the iFixit guides you will see many fiddly connectors, if the tech failed to hook them all back up it could explain the failure, or perhaps you just have a disk that is 'dead on arrival' - sometimes that happens. A properly trained technician should be able to figure that one out.

Apple at this time does not repair iPods, but assuming that that iPod is not in multiple pieces will replace the entire iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:

There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to perform a repair for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". It is also possible to purchase parts and find instructions on doing a repair yourself, though it's not particularly easy. Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPod serviced by an unauthorized shop or perform a repair yourself, all further support from Apple will be void.
