How necessary is iWork?

I'm getting ready to make the big purchase and am wondering if iWork is really a necessity? The only thing I need is a simple word program. I don't need spreadsheets, I don't need presentations, I don't even need to put pictures in my documents. Is there some sort of word program that comes standard on the MacBook Pro? (Kinda like WordPad on a PC?) I really just need to be able to type and print letters. I just hate to buy and install the whole thing when I will only be using 1 out of 3 functions. It seems like a waste of space for me. Thanks!

You can get OpenOffice for free, and TextWrangler from Bare Bones Software is a much better text editor than the included OS X app.
OpenOffice is a good, free option to MS Office, and for that matter, the free GIMP image editing tool is a decent free alternative to PhotoShop.

There is no need to ever sleep a desktop Mac. I set my desktops Macs to never sleep the computer, sleep the monitor after 10-20 minutes & put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. I do sleep my laptops by closing the lid, never through the Apple menu. I have had problems since at least OS 8 with Macs not waking from sleep, being "comatose," & needing to hold down the power button to shut the Mac off then restart. The laptops rarely exhibit this behavior. I wouldn't set the monitor to never sleep, though. It won't hurt anything, but the monitor, even a flat-panel, uses more energy than any component.

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

It all depends on how you use yoru device. Do you have kids that will play with it with grubby fingers? Use it outside? Use it in places where it can get scratched or nicked? then you might want one.
I put one on mine just because it's a 500 dollar device and I want to protect it and keep it in good shape. Others swear that the last thing they need is a screen protector.
All comes down to personal preference.
I would say, personally, the smart case may not be the most protective out there. But ultimately it comes down to you, how and where you use it.

I have never encountered a site to which I couldn't log in again after trashing its cookie(s). If you use Firefox (Preferences), you can list exceptions of cookies you don't want removed (e.g., for startpage and duckduck searching, I keep startpage and duckduck cookies in order to keep those search settings) and those you never want to accept (I have all Google cookies blocked. Doesn't keep me from using Google search, images or maps, but if you belong to a Google group or run some kind of Google program, that may be a problem.) Safari probably has some cookie manager extension available for that also.
If you use Firefox, NoScript will effectively block all google tracking that occurs on mousedown.
In your browser>Preferences, make sure you don't allow third party sites to store cookies.
What's even more worrisome than ordinary cookies, are Flash cookies ("Local Shared Objects"), which are persistent cookies, including the "evercookie." They aren't stored in the browser.
With Firefox, you can deal with this by using the Better Privacy Add-on, or see this post of mine, as modified by Kurt Lang.

How Necessary is PRAM battery on MacBook Pro (c2d intel 2.13, model a1211)

Hello Everyone, I stupidly broke the socket/clip where the pram battery attaches to the logic board on my Macbook Pro (c2d Intel 2.13). Unfortunately, since the socket/clip is a surface mount component and the way it broke (I don't see solder pads) I'm unable to re-solder the clip back on to the motherboard. My first question is if anyone knows how vital the pram battery is to a Intel Macbook? It seems that the laptop works fine without the pram battery. Is the battery only necessary to retain pram settings if the main laptop battery is removed and the power adapter disconnected?
Second question is whether there is any alternative to repair the logic board other than get an entirely new board? The laptop is recently out of warranty (Applecare expired earlier this year) and I don't believe that Apple would have covered this since I caused the damage myself.
Third question(s) is whether it would cause any problems to use the logic board out of a c2d 2.33 a1211 macbook pro (I can get my hands on one for a pretty reasonable price)? The only difference I can see between the two boards is the clock speed of the main processor and the amount of video ram. Would there be any advantage to using this logic board? Doesn't seem like the speed bump and video ram would do to much.

Much obliged. So it sounds like the only time this will be an issue is if I disconnect the regular battery and the power supply at the same time. The rational thing to do here is to just live with it rather than blowing hundreds on the new logic board and risking additional damage during replacement.
I just wish I wasn't so OCD about this. Bothers me a bit to know that something is wrong with the laptop even if it doesn't manifest itself on a day to day basis.

OK I was having trouble with with 2011 Mac Mini and iWork I bought on DVD & the preinstalled iWork not updating.
Here's how I got it to update in through the app store.
Open App Store on your Mac if they don't show as an update in the tab and are not in your Purchases tab, go to the Featured tab & click Account under Quick Links, enter your password, & click Reset all warning for buying and downloading at the bottom of this page, & click Done.
Check your updates tab & iWork & iLife updates should now appear, at least this is how I got it to work on my 2011 Mac Mini.

Had iWork 08, Pages stopped recognizing it, Installed iWork 09, seemed to go alright but when finished only Keynote09 and Numbers09 would work, Pages 09 unresponsive. Need advise to clear out 08 completely cause there seems to be a conflict between the two. Dumped 08 into the trash, emptied trash and when I wanted Pages 09 to open, up popped Pages08 again like from the dead. What to do . . .?

Just drag the iWork '08 folder from Applications to the Trash & empty the Trash. The iWork '09 apps will use any templates you already created as well as your existing preferences. You can delete any of these & create new ones, but it isn't necessary.

Now that I have iWork '08, how do I uninstall the old Pages and Keynote in iWork '06? Can I just drag it to the Trash?

It does seem that most of the journal templates from Pages 1 & 2 aren't included in Pages 3. If you want them to be available in Pages 3, you could do what I did. I opened the Pages 2 package (Control- or right-click on the application icon & choose show package contents from the contextual menu) & found the templates in Content > Resources > English > Templates & then copied the Journals folder to HD > Users > your account > Library > Application Support > iWork > Pages > Templates > My Templates & they now show up under My Templates in the Template Chooser.
