How Noisy Should a MacBook Be?

I have the grandaddy of all Macbooks - a 1.83 Core Duo - that I've been ignoring for some time. But recently, I decided to extend its life a bit by upgrading to an SSD (a great decision BTW).
The MB still serves my needs well, but there's one thing that bothers me -- the noisy fan during high CPU loads. I've been monitoring when the fan kicks in and it's usually related to Flash or app installs, which is all to be expected. The thing is, I've had this thing since '06 and it just seems more noisy than before. However, its also possible that I just forgot what the noise level was really like.
The noise at full RPMs doesn't sound like a noisy fan really, more like a blower. It's definitely annoying while watching flash videos. I actually ordered a new $6 replacement fan from eBay, but I'm not sure I want to open the case again if my existing fan is fine.

Try cleaning the fan vent with compressed air (from a can, not an air compressor).
I use smcfancontrol to keep an eye on my CPU temp and fan speed. I've actually configured my mac so that the minimum fan speed is 4000 rpm (it's always audible). Now the fan has become white noise and doesn't bother me even when it's at 6000 rpm.

  • How long should a MacBook Pro take to start up?

I purchased my MacBook Pro 11 mo ago, at the beginning it would take about 30 secs to start up, now it takes almost a minute (the same as my old Dell computer) the only program I have installed is Microsoft office, the mac computers at work take about 30 secs to start up.
I probably don't have more than 10 word files in "my documents" and no more than 500 photos, which I think is nothing compared to ALL the information I have in the computer at work
is it normal to take 1 minute to start up? What should I do in order to make the start up faster?
It annoys me that it takes almost the same as my old Dell computer
    Thanks

Mountain Lion has a annoying feature it loads the last used programs when you log in.
So disable that, there are various hacks on this thread
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3244852?start=30&tstart=0
See if that improves your boot time and if not, then do the #12/#13 OnyC cache cleaning routine here and reboot when finished.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If that doesn't solve it, investigate your Office verison is compatible with your OS X version

Uninstall it and see if the boot time resumes normally, or update it or run further through the Steps.
    Why is my computer slow?
The Mac's at work, are they running 10.7 or later? Or the fast and speedy 10.6

  • How noisy is your macbook?

just wondering because mine is a little. While sitting in my silent room at night not particulary close I still can hear a buzzing sound comming from under the the keyboard- "g" or "H"keys area. Fan is just 1300~1500 and I guess it is a CPU sound but is it natural or it is just me who panics? IT is not so noisy! it's just irritating especially when you watching a film lying close to your laptop

The fan is always on but on a low RPM if you are not doing much CPU intensive stuff and can barely be heard if at all at this low speed.
But most 5400 RPM or faster hard drives make a sound that is much like fan noise because they of course are blowing air so to speak as they spin, and at the higher speeds the more noise they tend to make.
I could always hear my 5400 RPM HD making a fan-like noise and can also hear my new 7200 RPM drive making a similar but somewhat different fan-like noise.

  • How long should my macbook pro battery charge last before needing to be recharged

My macbook pro goes from 100% fully charged to zero in one day of light use.  Is that normal?  It seems to hold a charge for less time now than in the past.  Do I need a new battery?  Thanks, Gina

Watching video depletes the battery faster than typing a letter. My MBP battery will go down from 100% to about 65% (sometimes down to 50%)  in about 3 - 4 hours if I do nothing but browse this site and possibly watch a short video. It also depends on the screen brightness settings and a host of other things. If you only use it for 2 hours, then there is a problem and I'd take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.

  • How often should I charge my new macbook pro with retina display?

hi everybody! I just got my macbook today and I want to take good care of it so it lasts me a while, and I'm particularly concerned about the battery life. what ensures that I can maintain a battery that will drain the slowest? or in other words, what are healthy charging habits? I'm a student so I'll be using it more than  a few hours daily. should I turn off my macbook or set it to sleep when I'm going to sleep for the night (~6 hours). is there ever a time when sleep is preferable to shut down? when I'm using it for an extended period of time, is it better to run it down and charge it or to leave it charging at 100%? how often should I run down the battery, or if not, what level should I run it down to before charging it again? I read somewhere that it's best to charge it to 80% instead of 100%, is there any truth to this? any input is appreciated, thanks.

  • How much should it cost to replace a hard drive on a MacBook Pro.

How much should it cost to replace a hard drive on a MacBook Pro?  I think the drive that failed was 500gb.

This is an international community.  Prices vary from country, state, city, etc.
You should call the repair shop of your choice and ask for an estimate.  Make sure the estimate includes taxes, labor costs, etc.

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

  • 2.0Ghz MacBook owners - how noisy is it?

    Hi,
to the guys who already have theirs, I'd like to know how noisy it is...
Does the fan run often, or constantly? Is it a noisy fan?
Is there any whine like on the idling MacBook Pro?
Or, is it as quiet as the G4 Mac Mini (absolutely silent apart from the Harddisk sounds)?
    Thanks for the info!

My machine is very quiet. I've not heard any loud noises from my HD. When the fan comes on it sounds like a normal fan cooling down the computer to me. So far I'm very pleased with everything about my MB!!

  • How long should you use the Macbook is the fan is at Max?

Hey all, the reason i ask is because sometimes when i visit a site with embedded video the CPU rises and heats up so the fan goes up to max. How long should you keep there with out damaging anything? Sometimes the videos are 45 mins, there tv shows and by 5th min is heated up and i dont want to keep it running for the rest of the 45 mins and wreck somthing. Whats the max time for that?

Not really an answer but I was wondering where your computer is located or how you are using it? My kids were putting a quilted blanket on their lap and then running their notebook on top of the blanket. The blanket had a terrible insulating affect on the computer. And to make matters worse, sometimes the blanket would block the fan exhaust! I had to scold them and teach them to put something else on the blanket over their lap, like a book, and then put the notebook on the book. That really stopped the fan from running a lot.
It's just something to be aware of. The MB will run cooler if there is space all around it.

  • How long should macbook air battery should last

how long hours does macbook air 2011 13 inch baterry

No, that's not good at all. Its battery probably needs to be replaced. Have Apple evaluate it for replacement. The 60W power adapter is fine.
so the condtion of my notebook is pre used
I am not certain what you mean by that, but if you did not buy your MBA new from Apple, replacing its battery is even more justified. No one knows what its previous owner did with it.
If its battery was permitted to remain completely discharged for a long time (more than a few days) or if it was hardly used at all, for instance if it was always connected to power and has very few charge cycles, or if it was subjected to elevated temperatures for even a brief period of time, it almost certainly requires replacement.
A well-maintained battery in a MBA of that age will have had very approximately 300 to 800 charge cycles. I usually charge that MBA two or three times a week. Check its condition by clicking the  (Apple menu) > About This Mac > System Report > Power.
$129 US includes replacement and a warranty.

  • How long should it take to transfer information from hard drive to MacBook Pro after resetting

how long should it take to transfer information from my hard drive to my Mac Pro after it has been reset

There is no answer to that. The time depends on the amount of data and the method used for transfer.

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?

how to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?  My home computer is a Window 8 OS.  Thx.

The easiest way, and it may work from scratch, is to share the folders/drives you want access to on your pc, noticing what are the default parameters (eg "workgroup" etc.).
Then, you can connect your mac directly by ethernet, for instance, and, in Finder, go to > Network, you should see the folders/drives. You may be asked to provide user/password.
Don't get confused by regular/crossed ethernet cable, as mac can cross by software, so a regular cable will be ok.
Anyway, either you isd modem has the ability to connect several devices (multiple ethernet sockets, or wifi), or you can buy a router, which isn't expansive.

  • How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. Oh yeah and a mother thing is, I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb, what are your thoughts?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.

  • HOW TO RESET MY MACBOOK PRO MD976 AS I WANT TO DELETE ALL DATA FROM MACBOOK

how do i reset macbook pro MD976 to factory setting ? , cause i want to sell it .

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See What to do with iCloud before selling your computer.
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • How long should upgrade to Yosemite take?

I have downloaded Yosemite from the AppStore and on my initial attempt to install got to the point of having a grey screen with apple in the middle and a progress bar which stopped about 1/4th the way to completion.  I let it run overnight after reading posts online indicating that it should resolve itself with time.  After over 12 hours, I restarted the late 2012 MacBook Air and it would immediately go back to the same point in the installation.  I then booted to the recovery disk and restored Maverick from my TimeMachine.  I have tried to install again and have been stuck in the same spot for over 12 hours.  I've tried entering Command-L to observe the log file with no change in what is being displayed.  How long should I wait?

Install after download seems to take around a half hour.  Of course it will depend on your hardware.
