How NOT to cross-sync apps between devices?

Hey gang-
I backup all my iOS devices to iTunes on my desktop iMac.    I like everything about that except the fact that if I update an app, for example, on my iPad, iTunes then updates that app on my iPhone on the next Sync.    For lots of reason, I don't want to do that- for example some updates I like on iPhone and not on iPad, or vice versa.
Sooooo, I'm looking in iTunes and trying to figure out which setting will prevent this happening.  I'm looking at the Apps tab with my iPad connected, and I'm trying to figure out do I uncheck the very top choice "Sync Apps", or the one at the bottom of the list "Automatically Sync New Apps"    And what is the difference?   I get a rather scary Alert when I turn off "Sync Apps" that makes me think iTunes might not Backup my apps if I do that.
Thanks gang!
Dave

Open itunes, connect a device, go to the apps tab, select only the apps you want on that device, select sync app or they will all be erased.  If you do not want every new app that you download to be added to your device, tehn deselect that option.
Each device will only sync what you select

  • Syncing apps between devices

I'm having difficulty syncing some apps between devices so that data is saved. I recently purchased an iPad mini for my daughter and want her to have some of her existing game apps to play, and then delete from my iPad. Anyone encountered the same, or any solutions?

I'm having the same problem with apps not syncing between my iPhone 5s and iPad Air. I made sure under settings > iTunes & Apps Store that automatic Download is on and selected for Music, Apps, Books, and Updates. Have you gotten a resolution to that issue?

Open iTunes and from the Menu Bar select Store...
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.

  • IBooks bookmarks syncing incorrectly between devices

I have a book I am reading on iBooks on my MacBook Pro with Mavericks, my iPhone 5s with iOS 7, and my iPod touch 4g, which has iOS 6. I have each device set up to sync bookmarks and collections between devices, but the bookmarks keep syncing incorrectly. For example: I am reading on my iPhone, and I drop a bookmark 2 pages away from the end of chapter 40. If I open the book on my iPod touch it does not show the current bookmark, but an old one from earlier in the chapter. Another example: I am reading on my iPod touch, and I drop a bookmark two pages away from the end of chapter 40. This time, I open the book on my iPhone, and it has placed a new bookmark at chapter 39! I open the book on my MacBook Pro after that, and a bookmark has been placed at the beginning go chapter 40!
So, there you have it. I place a bookmark on one device, and the other two devices place bookmarks in completely different places on the book.
All of my devices have the same Apple ID, and both of the mobile devices are synced with iTunes.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks.

The only info that syncs via iCloud for iBooks is collection lists (not the books themselves), Bookmarks, and Notes.
The Books themselves can be automatically downloaded if they are coming from the store.  On the iPhone, go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Turn on Automatic Downloads for Books.  Same thing can be done on the Mac in preferences.
Since your Books are not from the store, the only way to get them on both devices is to download them to both devices.  This will never occur automatically.  This also goes for PDFs you add to your iBooks
Hope that helps solve the mystery.
iBooks: How to sync iBooks between devices
If you buy a book on your Mac, it’s automatically available on all of your iOS devices with iOS 6 or later.
You can even synchronize your bookmarks, notes, and collections across your devices.

  • HT4436 iCloud for app between devices

how to i turn off compatibility of an app between devices? under iCloud settings, I turned off "notes", but it's still connected between my mac and iPhone. for example, when I edit/delete a note on my phone, it edits/deletes the note on my mac… Does anyone know how to turn it off?

If you turned of Notes in Settings>iCloud and changes to your notes on your phone still appear on your Mac, you must be syncing notes with another provider rather than iCloud.  Open the Notes app and tap Accounts at the top.  Tap each account listed to see what account your notes belong to (iCloud only syncs notes that belong to the iCloud account; the iCloud account won't be listed if you turned off Notes in Settings>iCloud).
If you notes belong to another account, for example a Gmail account, you would need to go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars, tap the Account, then turn off Notes syncing with the account in order to stop syncing with your Mac.

  • We have family sharing set up between all the family idevices. Can we share either Notes or a Pages document between devices?

We have family sharing set up between all the family I devices. We want to collaborate on a document.  Can we share either Notes or a Pages document between devices?  We are all using iPad 2 or later and/or iPod touch or iPhone 5

The "Sharing" part of Family Sharing refers mainly to purchased content. iCloud synced content such as Notes and contacts as well as documents is not included. While I do not know of anyway to share notes, iWorks documents can be shared directly from the app via an iCloud link.

  • Sharing apps between devices

How can you share paid apps between my devices?

If both devices are logged In with the same iTunes account you will not have to pay a second time. Browse to the app you already paid for in the App Store. You will see there is no price on it,meaning you can download again for free.
To automatically have apps download on both devices when you install to one device, go to settings - iTunes and app stores - and turn on the switch for apps. Do that on both devices and whenever you install on one, the other one will get the app too.

How can I share purchased apps between 2 diff users on the same mac?

A purchased app is associated with an Apple ID. A user with a different Apple ID cannot use the app unless they also use the same Apple ID.
I cannot use my wife's apps nor she mine because each were purchased with different Apple IDs.

  • The option to sync apps is no longer available in iTunes, though it used to be. Can anyone tell me how to access the sync apps button please?

Can anyone tell me how to access the sync apps button please? I used to be able to select it but it is no longer visible.

You have to connect and select iPhone in computer iTunes Sidebar.
If you don't see the Sidebar, toggle it on in iTunes menu View > Show Sidebar.
Take a look at this screenshot on updating apps.

    Hi,
May i know which app in particular you are taking about.
If that is Adobe Reader you need to sign-in in Adobe Id and password and that should be it.

  • Recently getting "not authorized" to sync apps to computer

For some reason I'm getting a "not authorized" to sync apps installed on my iPad to my computer. I've done it before, however, its not allowing me to sync now, even after I attempted to re-authorize with my correct account info.

Fixed it by doubleclicking on the game in iTunes and authorizing it.

  • Share apps between devices

when I buy an app in the Ipad it is supposed to show up in my Iphone. But i doesent. i have enabled I cloud and in the Appstore I have enabled "share apps between devices".

Ther are many apps that are built just for the iPad only. You may want to chech to see if those apps you have state that they are designed for iPhone and iPad. Many times, you have to buy a version for each device.

  • Firefox sync not syncing data between device

Although Firefox sync syncing, data does not advice.

It worked!! Thank you so much! Now, may I ask what happened? I feel like if this sort of thing happens again in the future I will have a better understanding of exactly what '''services.sync.clusterURL''' is and why resetting it resolves syncing issues. FYI I deleted some empty folders that were created when this whole issue started and forced an immediate sync and the problem device was no longer a problem. I performed this action on my laptop i.e. the problem device and on my desktop PC so I could thoroughly test the two-way communication and after syncing on either device the changes were reflected on the other.

  • Can I have iTunes music on my SSD and an external drive? How will this affect syncing to iOS devices?

I don't have space to keep my entire iTunes library on my SSD. Currently I have my iTunes library split as follows:
SSD: Contains a subset of music, apps, books, etc. New items usually get added here.
External HD: Contains all of my music and iTunes media (including apps... so many apps). It's usually missing the most recent items added, due to the fact I don't plug it in so often.
I ran into a problem maintaining these two libraries earlier while syncing my iPhone. When I tried to sync the iPhone with the SSD library, it would delete apps off of my phone because they weren't contained in the iTunes library there, even though I had the same base .itl file for both the SSD and the external libraries.
What I want to do is set it up so that I maintain a core of music on my SSD and the stuff I don't listen to as often on my external hard drive. I also want to keep all the space hogs (movies, apps, etc) on the external as well. However, I want this to appear as one seamless iTunes library and I DON'T EVER WANT ANYTHING DELETED FROM MY PHONE WHEN I SYNC IT. I want to be able to sync my phone without worrying that apps will be deleted and I'll have to restore them from iCloud and reset all the settings, sign in, etc. Right now I am backing up to iCloud, but my understanding is that iTunes will still delete things from my phone if they are not available in the library.
My question: How do I accomplish this? I have a lot of metadata in my iTunes library that I don't want to lose (playcounts, ratings, etc).
I currently have this:   SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD, a mixture of iTunes media (some that I want easily accessible, some I don't)
External drive: .itl file pointing to music on the external drive, all of my iTunes media (except for anything I may have added to the SSD)
I think I need this:       SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD and the external, music that I listen to often
External drive: music that I don't listen to often, things that take up a lot of space
My thought process is that I will need to somehow move music from the external to the SSD while maintaining the pointers so that iTunes knows where they are. For this I have unchecked "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding To Library," and to maintain the pointers and move the songs, I'm thinking of using Doug's Applescripts for "Relocate Selected:" http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected
Once I have the songs split across these drives, I'm going to copy the .itl file from the external to the SSD and boot it up to see if it works.
Two things: 1.) Will this approach work? Can I maintain my library across separate drives this way and have it be seamless? I understand I won't be able to access the media on my external hard drive when it is not plugged in (duh), but...
2.) Will it affect syncing? When my external isn't plugged in, will iTunes try and delete things from my iPhone? It should still be able to "see" them, it just won't be able to access them. Will I have to turn off syncing apps while syncing with my external device unplugged?
Thanks very much for any help and insight! It is greatly appreciated as I deal with limited storage space and an expanding iTunes library.

This is all just a partial answer since details will depend upon how you want to do it.

You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that.  iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match.
