If you are not actively using the pad, it turns itself off, called autolock. It goes in stages, first sort of grey, then off. The time can be set under setting, general, autolock. The shortest time is 2 min, and goes up from there. This is part of the power saving scheme. Look there, and see if that is what is happening. If you are actively using an app, it will not turn off. If you are using an audio app, like the i pod app, the screen will turn off but the audio will continue.

I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.

There are many Black themes available on the web, I use Tehkseven a lot , but you can get them at Ovi Store and elsewhere .They are easy to install ,or if you're happy with the icons you have at the moment simply download a black wallpaper and use it on all 3 screens . Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank. Be patient, the device will power ON again in the normal way. It is app and data safe

Mac Mini 2011 screen blacks out during heavy screen activity

I have a Mac Mini 2011 i5 2.3Ghz with Intel HD video. It's connected to a 30" LCD 2560x1600 (Dell WFP3008) via mini-DP to DP cable and a 22" LCD 1920x1080 (Samsung LCD TV) via HDMI to HDMI cable.
For the first few weeks I had it connected to the 30" only and it was fine. Then I hooked up the Samsung as a second display and the problems started.
The problem is that the Dell blacks out briefly, then comes back. It is not "drawing" the screen black, the signal to the Dell gets disrupted momentarily so the monitor has no signal so it goes black. Then it resyncs with the signal and the display is back. This only happens to the Dell, during the disruption, the Samsung image stays put. I know it is a signal disruption because the Dell shows a displayport icon showing that it has just resynced to that input.
The problem happens more frequently when more things are going on; like if I have a window or multiple windows playing video, then the disruption happens more. If I disconnect the Samsung, it happens less. It could even happen if a web browser window taking up a large portion of the 30" screen does a full page update, it will disrupt. If I am running Adobe Lightroom, it seems to happen more also.
When it happens it seems like messages like this appear in the console, although i can't say they are directly correlated:

I'm thinking perhaps the mini is running low on memory since the 2560x1600 is pretty high res and then add the 1080p screen and stuff being updated, perhaps it runs out of memory and disrupts the signal while it garbage collects? Pure speculation.
Has anybody else seen this and have any clues on how to resolve it? Thanks.

I should clarify that when I say perhaps the mini is running low on memory, I mean low on shared video memory, since the computer has 16GB installed. I'm not sure how to view or test shared video memory allocation.

You don't in the condition it's in. You will either have to get the phone replaced by Apple or pay a 3rd party to repair it.

How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep?!!!

I would like to play a movie on my iMac but to watch it on my LCD TV. How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep. PLS have in mind that ctrl+shift+ eject does not work, it makes my iMac screen go black as well as the tv screen.So far, i have red many articles concerning this subject, but no one seems to have the right answer. I simply can´t believe that apple did not think of it, as it is nothing new ....

I have been talking to the people over at macforums and they had some good thoughts. One guy suggested going analog and soldering in a rocker switch on the cable connecting a hub to the computer, turn off switch turns off keyboard and mouse.
I was prepared to try that but a great idea came along. Arch, you might be interested in this too. Buy a cheap (found one locally for $20) usb kvm switch that takes one usb keyboard and mouse and connects it to two pcs/macs and only connect one of the outs to my system. There is a button to switch between the two, so when I want to disable the keyboard and mouse, I just switch it to pc2, which is not connected to anything.
Cheap and easy solution. I wish I could of figured out how to do this with software, since there would be no money if it was freeware, but I guess you cant win them all.

In current Firefox releases (29 and later) the orange Firefox menu button has been replaced by the three-bar Firefox Menu button at the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar and this button is always visible whether the Menu Bar is visible or hidden.
You can no longer hide the Navigation Toolbar.
*There is a star like button next to the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the current web page and a "Show your bookmarks" button next to it to open the Bookmarks in a drop down menu.

Why is my iPad 2 screen black? How can I fix it?

My brother just dropped our iPad 2 and when he picked it up the screen was purple. He then turned it off and when it was back on it was all black. I can hear the lock sound when I lock it it's just that the whole screen is black. The funny thing is he dropped in on a carpet from not a very great height. So how can I fix it? Please don't tell me to reset/turn it back off because I have tried this multiple times. I haven't tried restoring it though. Will that help? Will appreciate all advice. Thank you greatly!

My first instruction may well be exactly what you've done but I want to ensure that we're talking about the same thing.
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

Did you remove Quicktime X?
On a normal install Quicktime 7 is installed in the Utilities folder and Quicktime Pro in the main Applications folder.
You will need to reinstall OS X to get Quicktime X back if you have deleted it.
I notice yor profile says 10.5.8. Quicktime X is only available on 10.6 and above.
